On June 12th, Princess Hisako and Princess Tsuguko attended the opening ceremony of the Mashiko Yuwakan (formerly Nanma hotel) in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture.
Emperor Emeritus Akihito was evacuated to the hotel from Tamozawa Imperial Villa during WWII. The 2nd floor room where he learned of Japan's surrender (Emperor Showa's Jewel Voice Broadcast) is now an exhibition called "The Gallery of Peace."
The hotel was originally located in Yumoto Onsen, in Oku-Nikko, Tochigi and later closed. The building was relocated to Mashiko in 1973, serving as an inn and events venue before being donated to the town in 2016. Mashiko spent about 200 million yen on maintenance and renovations. Now, renamed Mashiko Yuwakan, the building opened to the public on the 13th and offers 5 rooms.
