:previous: Thanks! When Princess Hisako encountered a photo of the CP family at Princess Aiko's high school, she remarked how happy they looked. As a photographer of birds and honorary president of BirdLife International, she keenly inquired after the bird photos at the exhibit. Pro golfer Nasa Hataoka opened the exhibition.

On January 16th, IHA announced Princess Hisako retired from 2 organizations and will be succeeded by her daughters. Princess Tsuguko will be honorary president of the All Japan Archery Federation; Princess Ayako will be honorary president of Japan-Canada Society. Princess Hisako had these patronages since her husband's death in 2002.

Thanks for the update!
Is there a reason for Princess Hisako to retire from the aforementioned patronages?

The report didn't give a reason. I assume she can take on other patronages or it's a way to give her daughters a bigger role. These are Tsuguko's and Ayako's first honorary positions.

On January 20th, Princess Hisako attended the "Takamado Netsuke Collection Exhibition" at the Sakura City Museum of Art in Chiba Prefecture. The exhibit, open until February 18th, features 293 pieces including 14 works made by foreigners and 41 pieces from the Edo period.

What is interesting is that the Takamado and Mikasa princesses are stepping into larger roles yet the Emperor is claimed to envision scaling down the activities of the peripheral branches.

Moving Toward Abdication / Working to ensure stable Imperial succession no easy task - The Japan News

To reduce the burden of official duties on the remaining Imperial family members, there also is a plan to allow married women to continue their Imperial activities under the status of national public officials. The plan was discussed within the government several years ago. However, it was shelved because an agreement could not be reached between the Prime Minister’s Office, which wanted to expand the scope of women who would be entrusted with such activities, and the Imperial Household Agency, which wished to narrow down the scope, according to informed sources.

Princess Tsugiko and Princess Ayako competed their education and become full time royals.

More transition... Princess Hisako retired from the Japan Squash Association and the Japan Sea Friend's Federation on January 31st. The next day, Princess Tsuguko was appointed honorary chairman to the Japan Squash Association and Princess Ayako became honorary president of the Japan Sea Friend's Federation. "According to the IHA, both organizations are aiming at dissemination to the younger generation [so] they were handed over to the next generation of the Imperial family."

Note: The organization uses Japan Sea Cadet Federation whereas IHA translated as Japan Sea Friend's Federation on the Takamado family's English page.

An aim that will be hopeless twenty years hence when, predictably, only two adult members of the imperial family will be under 70: Hisahito and his future wife.

I agree. Sadly, there's no urgency to fix the problem. I don't have high hopes these patronages will change media coverage for Tsuguko or Ayako. Reaction has been mixed. Some are supportive and excited Tsuguko and Ayako will have more public roles. Others want the younger Takamado and Mikasa princesses to marry out so giving them patronages is seen as discouraging them from leaving.

On February 4th, Princess Hisako attended the 2018 Tableware Festival at the Tokyo Dome.

More photos at Asahi. The article says Prince Takamado gave his fiancee Hisako a horse shaped netsuke for her birthday in 1984. At their engagement press conference that August, she was asked what was her birthday gift from the prince; she replied "netsuke" which left the reporters confused.

It is interesting that Princess Takamado has been assigned to/given a new patronage. I thought she planned to reduce her patronages.

Good to see that she is assigned for new patronage! I thought she would be sidelined soon because of the coming abdication (which it's too bad as I always think she is a great treasure for the imperial family).
