Former Girlfriends of King Willem-Alexander
I have been reading a book on the Royal Families of Europe and
in the Chapter on the Netherlands it states that The Prince of Orange
was engaged for quite a few years to a young Dutch Lady, but
was encouraged by the Queen to break the engagement, since she was a commoner and Catholic.
Does anyone know who this lady is?

Emily. She was his girlfriend for a few years, yes, but that she was catholic was not the problem. Her dad,a dentist, was a bit of a fraud tax wise and had moved to Belgium as the tax climate "is better there",besides that,he wasn't discrete on his daughters relation to Alexander,he blabbered,we can't have that.Being the girlfriend of a Crown Prince makes everyone thinks they have a say and everyone will start looking for what we call "lijken in de kast",bodies in the closet.Besides all that, everybody has had more then one girlfriend- or boyfriend....at least I hope so....
They seperated, yes, but Emily is happily married, since years, with a friend of Alexander. But Alexander has had several girlfriends, you know...
you have to start somewhere learning how to get by on a bicycle....

In addition, what I know is being Catholic isn't a problem for the Dutch Royal family as Maxima is Catholic.

According to the Telegraaf, Emily Bremers and her husband Jhr. Roderick van der Wijck are getting a divorce. Bremers is moving to another house in The Hague. The couple has two children.

Ow... too bad for the couple. In 2002 Jonkheer Rhoderick Wolter Arnold van der Wyck married Miss Emily Anna Hubertina Maria Bremers at Duyvenvoorde Castle in Voorschoten near The Hague (civil). The religious wedding took place in Kapellen, close to Brasschaat, an posh residential area just over the Dutch-Belgian border, in the province Antwerp, where the couple lives (lived).
The couple got two children:
Jonkheer Philip Rein Lodewijk van der Wyck (2003)
Jonkheer Maurits Rhoderick August van der Wyck (2004)
The aristocrat family Van der Wyck still owns some historic estates in the Netherlands.

Her ex-husband, Jonkheer Roderick van der Wyck, seems to be one of the best friends of the King. So it is more her ex-husband than Emily herself who has (had) warm contacts with the Court.

Was it Willem-Alexander (then Prince of Orange) who was their matchmaker?

From 1994 to 1998. She was a great favourite with the gossip press and it was long expected that the two would marry. However, things didn't work out. Some claim that Beatrix had very strong doubts.
The relationship became known as the late Freddy Heineken had a slip of the tongue and mentioned he had dinner with WA and his girlfriend. The first pictures appeared in January 1995 when WA crashed a car in Germany while driving home from winter sports, with Emily next to him.
In 1998 she still attended the 60th birthday ball of Q. Beatrix in Amsterdam and the wedding of Maurits and Marilene. In september 1998 it became clear that the two broke up, as Josee van den Broek (mother of Pss Marilene) confirmed this to NRC Handelsblad. Emily's father Louis was named 'the most unsuitable father in law of the country' (little did they know what would come afterwards ... ). The press was rather negative about him as he seemed to be the proto type of a snob and because it was said he moved to Belgium for tax reasons. Her mother Lisanne Rottier is from a rich family from Zeeuws-Flanders. Mr. Bremers denied most issues btw, in a letter to the magazine HP/De Tijd:
http://www.trouw.nl/tr/nl/5009/Archi...iet-raar.dhtml
In April 1999 the king met his future wife in Seville. The relationship became clear to the public in the summer of 1999 already when they were pictured on P. Bernhards boat in Porto Ercole, though it took a while before the identity was known.
The other known serious relationship of the king was with Yolande Adriaansens from Amsterdam, which was in the late 80-ties. It lasted for two years but the lady didn't like the press attention.
Other rumoured relationships were with Paulette Schroder, daughter & heiress of Martinair founder Martin Schroder, model Frederique van der Wal, speed skating champion Yvonne van Gennip and Barbara Boomsma from the Hague (of the Frisian Jenever company) . The first three seem to have been reality in the press only, as was the dream match with the CPss of Sweden. The relationship with Boomsma lasted a few months only. She later married a nephew of the jazz musician Pim Jacobs. Boomsma & husband.

It seems the relationship with Yolande Adriaensens was, beside the one with Emily Bremers, the only other serious one (before Máxima).
Yolande Adriaensens and the Prince became befriended in 1988. At that moment Yolande was reading Communication & Media in Amsterdam. It seems that even Queen Beatrix thought Yolande was 'suitable' and it is rumoured that the girlfriend was given a better (student) housing in Amsterdam (more private and more security, so that the Prince could visit her). Yolande Adriaensens also went on holiday with the Queen, the Prince and their three sons. It seems the relationship lasted three years.
Most likely Yolande ended the relationship when she became more and more aware of the pressure and the intrusion which are included in a life aside Prince Willem-Alexander. The newspaper De Telegraaf reported that the relationship was ended because Yolande "could not cope with the pressure of the future kingship."
Yolande Adriaensens married well anyway: with the director of the international toy retail chain Toys 'R' Us, Mr Caspar Klinkhamer, and lived in Annecy (France). The family moved back to the Netherlands. In 2010 Yolande started her own business: LRT Remedial Teaching. This institute helps children to overcome an underdevelopment in reading, calculating and language. It seems Yolande lives in Laren, one of the most posh residential areas (together with neighbouring Blaricum one of the wealthiest municipalities in the Netherlands). And -as a good lady from "pearl chains and Burberry shawls" Laren, she is active in the field hockey competition. Her husband Caspar Klinkhamer is now the CEO of a company which owns MyCom, Dixons and iCentre, a big ict and electronica retailer. Until recently he was CEO of Bol.com, the biggest consumer goods web-retailer in the Netherlands. So Yolande still has a wealthy and privileged life, without intrusion, maybe a better life than Máxima...
This is Yolande now (48 years old) on the website of the field hockey club
