pfff, it was a long interview. Maxima called the mistake of her future husband (quoting Videla) 'een beetje dom' a little silly/stupid. Many questions were asked, abput the past of her father, about her religion etc etc.

Oh man that sounds good. I wish I could read more about it. Did the press know they were together before hand?

Yes, it was known for over a year. I In the summer of 1999 the first pictures were taken of WA with an unidentified woman aboard the yacht of his grandfather, prince Bernhard. First she was identified as Maxima Zimmerman. That caused som eyebrows to rise as Some people with german names in South America are (grand)children of escaped Nazi's. I remember an angry letter in a newspaper complaining that it seemed to be that the dutch RF only allowed itself to marry germans.
Later on television news and -de Volkskrant' revealed the true identity of Maxima, when she, WA and her relatives were skiing in Bariloche. Then the problem of the father came up. The prime ministers measures and Maxima's charming behavior later cooled everything down and silenced most critics.

I think Maxima is fantastic. She has such positive and warm energy; WA is a extremely lucky man.:)

Yes, she really has. :) She's managed to capture the hearts of the dutch people from the start...

Was there a ball (or at least a formal dinner) for Willem and Maxima to celebrate their engagement? I thought I remembered a celebration where Maxima wore a lacy top with a blue ball gown.
Or maybe someone could provide a list of all the events and festivities to celebrate Willem and Maxima's engagement and wedding?

Video of the press conference of the engagement, from the DVD Princes of Orange: Engagements and Weddings. I don't think it's the full interview however, it's just Beatrix announcing the engagement, then Claus speaks then Willem-Alexander
Oh, it's just in Dutch, sorry!

Thank you for providing the video. I too was surprised to find that Prince Claus was so very ill. I'm sorry that he did not have the chance to meet all of his grandchildren, only Countess Eloise.

If you look in the Royal Jewels section, I think there is a thread about engagement rings.

He was 76 when he died in the fall of 2002. He had suffered from cancer and Parkinson's disease. If you look in the Dutch Royals forum, there is a thread about his funeral.
