New royal heir on the way

The Royal Palace in Oslo finally announced on Friday the news that many Norwegians had been waiting for since their crown prince got married nearly two years ago: His wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is pregnant.

The news was also arguably the best gift Queen Sonja could get as she celebrated her 66th birthday on Friday. The child, whether it's a girl or a boy, will take over as monarch after King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon.

The baby is due January 22. Crown Princess Mette-Marit was said to be in "fine shape" and a normal pregnancy was expected. The palace said her pregnancy, however, may lead to some changes in her official duties.

It was the crown prince himself who formally released the news Friday morning when he was leading a weekly meeting with government ministers. Crown Prince Haakon told the ministers that Crown Princess Mette-Marit was pregnant, and was met by immediately congratulations.

"This is extremely good news both for the royal family and for the Norwegian people," said Foreign Minister Jan Petersen from the Conservatives. Petersen led the meeting in the absence of Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, who travelled to Brazil on Thursday.

Yes, Josefine I thought the photo you posted above from Hankø 2.july of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Maud Angelica Behn was special - thanks :)

Mette-Marit and Haakon drove by car from the royal palace to the train station this afternoon - they were on their way to Tønsberg - to go to the royal family's summer place on Tjøme - Mågerø - to celebrate Queen Sonja's 66.birthday.

Mette-Marit said she was in very good shape and was photographed - photo in this article :

That's great! Actually I read the news first in the website of hellomagazine and I was really happy to know she is pregnant. It's good news to the whole country!

It's funny how one month ago, the Norway papers were saying how the young couple was losing their appeal with the public. I think they should redo the poll now. I wouldn't be surprised to see that opinions have changed. Babies have a way of doing that, don't they? :flower:

Fantastic news indeed! And how great that several heirs will be born so close together (Dutch heir is due around the same time) so that they will be able to support one another. This happened with Elisabeth of Belgium and Aiko of Japan, too. And of course the second of Phillippe and Mathilde's baby is expected in the fall, too. Does anyone else find it curious that the palace announced the exact date of the baby's arrival? The due date is very hard to predict to the T, why wouldn't they have just said, 'January 2004'?

And I'm glad that this news was not announced before Maud's christening as it would've overshadowed her special day.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway Expecting a Baby

4 JULY 2003
Crown Prince Haakon and his wife of two years Princess Mette-Marit have revealed they are expecting a new addition to the family.

Father-to-be Prince Haakon was met with congratulations as he announced the happy news while leading a weekly meeting with government ministers. "This is extremely good news both for the royal family and for the Norwegian people," said Foreign Minister Jan Petersen.

The baby, which is due in January 2004 will be the first for the royal couple, though the princess already has a son, Marius, from a previous relationship. Regardless of the gender of the new arrival, he or she will become second in line to the throne behind Prince Haakon.

There may be some changes in Mette-Marit's calendar in the coming months, but the princess is in "fine shape" and expects a normal pregnancy, said the royal palace on Friday.

She and son Marius have moved back to Oslo after a one-year stay in London, and her husband Prince Haakon continues to travel between Norway and the UK as he finishes up his coursework at the London School of Economics.

All eyes on the royal tummy

Crown Princess Mette-Marit went for a boat ride with her crown prince on Sunday, dodging press boats full of photographers along the way. Long lenses were pointed mostly at her stomach, after confirmation of her pregnancy with the next heir to the throne.

The young Norwegian royals spent the weekend with Queen Sonja at the family's summer home on the island of Tjoeme. Mette-Marit didn't hesitate to wear a fashionably tight tank-top and long skirt that were revealing, but didn't show much sign of a baby on the way.

The couple had left Oslo Friday afternoon on the royal train that took them to Toensberg, just two hours south of the capital. On the way, Mette-Marit told reporters and well-wishers that she felt just fine, while Crown Prince Haakon smiled patiently and claimed "of course we're happy" in response to reporters' questions.

Then they headed for the summer house, where Queen Sonja would greet an influx of invited guests celebrating her 66th birthday and the impending birth of her second grandchild.

Princess Martha Louise and her husband Ari Behn were also in place, making King Harald the only member of the immediate family to miss the event. He opted to go sailing off Spain.

Mette-Marit and Haakon were expected to stay at Maagero on Tjoeme most of this week. On Thursday, the entire family will travel to Sweden for the funeral of Prince Carl Bernadotte. King Harald also will return from Spain to pay his respects to his uncle, the youngest brother of the late Crown Princess Martha.

Not much of a bump?! Is the writer looking at the same picture I am? From that first picture, Mette-Marit seems to be showing much more than say Maxima or Sophie - and Sophie who is even further along!

I have to agree, Alexandria. Mette-Marit looks quite far along! Not sure what picture that writer was looking at!

she's probably showing more than the others because this is her second pregnancy and her muscles have already been stretched before.

My guess is that Mette-Marit isn't actually showing any more than Maxima, etc., it's just that we haven't been seeing the other royal moms-to-be in fitted tank tops and skirts! Two piece suits can cover a lot!!!

Baby Talk from Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit of Norway

8 JULY 2003
Just hours after Crown Prince Haakon announced he and his wife, Princess Mette-Marit, will become parents in January, the royal couple hopped on a train to Tonsberg, seventy kilometres south of Oslo, to attend the private celebrations for Queen Sonja's 66th birthday.

And as they made their way to the party, the two made their first comments since revealing the crown princess' pregnancy. "We're very happy and content – not just because we're bringing a baby into the world, but also because after going public with the news, we don't have the pressure of keeping it a secret," said Crown Prince Haakon. "Protocol kept us from announcing the pregnancy until after the first three months."

Haakon also remarked that he appreciated having the chance to practice being a father with six-year-old Marius, Princess Mette-Marit's son from a previous relationship.

The sex of the baby is still unknown, but whether a boy or a girl, the new arrival will occupy the second post in the line of succession, stepping ahead of his or her aunt, Princess Martha Louise. If the child is a female, she will be the first hereditary queen of Norway in 600 years.

Princess Mette-Marit is supposed to join the last charity run of the Kristiansand Zoo in Norway this month . She must be delusive that she would think of exerting herself that much while she's pregnant, especially since she's already had a child.

From Nettavisen, Norway -

Pregnant Crown Princess runs for charity

Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit will join a run amongst giraffes and monkeys in the Kristiansand Zoo in southern Norway in late August.

The run is for charity and initiated by athletes Johan Olav Koss and Kjetil Moe.

Impressed
Koss is impressed that the pregnant Crown Princess wants to join them for the run. He thinks her participation will be of great inspiration to the 2000 runners.

«I am both surprised and very happy for the support from the Crown Princess and the Royal Palace. It will be exciting to see her taking part and being active during the run. We hope the Crown Princess will want to run along with one of the participants as an accompaniment», Koss told NRK.

Last run
The zoo run was arranged for the first time in 1992, the idea being that both disabled people and others could participate in the run together. This year's run will be the last.
