Ingrid Alexandra's 18th birthday: 21 January, 2022 & birthday celebrations

The translations of the speeches are so lovely. It is clear that the Norwegian Royal Family is a very close and loving one! Reading the King finished by saying “I love you very much” brought a tear to my eye!

I noticed that, unlike some other continental European royals, Princess Ingrid-Alexandra has more of an American accent in English (actually, the more neutral international English that is closer to General American anyway).

On your last note,no,sorry...the honour for that goes to Queen Maxima.
Well, it´s fine, also. But this is your opinion!

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, today received her forst foreign Order. Crown Prince Frederik must have handed over, on behalf of his mother, the Order of the Elephant.

Perhaps IA attends the Queen of Denmark´s Golden Jubilee celebrations in September and we will be able to see her wear it for the 1st time...!

I wish the Princess of Asturias had been there so they could have gotten an "all the female heirs" pic, one with Victoria, the first ever Crown Princess heir (who couldn't be superseded by a brother) would have been amaze!

I'd have loved them to do a pic with Guillaume, Haakon, Frederick, Victoria etc and these younger heirs.

It was a meeting of all the female heirs though wasn't it or have I missed someone out?

Both Ingrid-Alexandra and Christian are still only second in line. But we tend to lose sight of that in countries with older monarchs who do not abdicate unlike in some other kingdoms.

Elisabeth's style in Belgium is:

Official long form: HRH Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant
Official short form: HRH Princess Elisabeth
https://www.monarchie.be/en/royal-family/princess-elisabeth-duchess-of-brabant
Unofficial, in the media: Crown Princess Elisabeth / Princess Elisabeth / the Crown Princess

The Norwegian royal court's guestlist uses "Her Royal Highness Princess Elisabeth - Duchess of Brabant".

https://www.kongehuset.no/artikkel.html?tid=212494&sek=112472

On the guestlist (see above link) they were listed under the names of their countries, so that it wasn't necessary to append a territorial designation. As for using forenames, the Dutch royal court itself uses "King Willem-Alexander".

But "King Felipe" doesn't make sense. When he is cited in Spain by his given name, it is always "S. M. el Rey (Don) Felipe VI", rather than "S.M. el Rey Felipe". King Willem-Alexander doesn't use an ordinal number.

And "King of Spain" is the title of his office (like "President of the United States") and not merely a territorial designation.

She went to the English-speaking Oslo International School for a couple of years - I imagine that's where her accent comes from ;)

Everyone looks lovely. Especially the younger generation.

But i think Maxima and Marie Chantal should have gone for something more medium sized... They are not meant to be the stars of THIS show....

Catharina Amalia’s tiara is a beautiful tribute to her mother who’s first tiara it also was...

And i also really hope Elisabeth’s tiara is NOT just a loan...

It was not Máxima's first diadem. She wore the base of the Pavolnik Diadem (sans pearls) in Oslo (wedding of Haakon and Mette-Marit) and she wore the art-déco diamond bandeau with the aquamarines in Amsterdam (Spanish State Visit). Both events were when she still was Ms Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti and fiancée to the Prince.

The diamond stars diadem actually was Máxima's third diadem.

Thank you to everyone who has been helpful with links, answers and commentary.

I was bowled over by her completely American accent when speaking English, was she educated in the US?

No, she has not studied abroad so far. However, she was (controversially) enrolled at Oslo International School, where a majority of classes are taught in English, from 2014 to 2019. I haven't looked through the website to determine if it is American English that is used there.

Being first versus second in line is material to constitutional status, but I don't think it influences, or ought to influence, the guestlists of their milestone celebrations. They are expected to one day take the throne as much as Elisabeth or Leonor are.

And "King of Spain" is the title of his office (like "President of the United States") and not merely a territorial designation.

Agreed, but I was referring to "of Spain". The Spanish royal household (casareal.es) generally cites the king as HM the King, not HM the King of Spain, so the "of Spain" is apparently severable from the rest of the title.

We may certainly hope so, and that would indeed be a logic reason to present her with the order.
Which normally is only presented to foreign heads of states when they come visiting.

It would also give Ingrid Alexandra a good opportunity to get some practice in a friendly setting and among friends, where any mistakes she may make will have virtually no consequence.
As such I wonder the next time the DRF or SRF is visiting Norway that IA will get a prominent host role, like escorting a foreign royal around for a couple of events?
Or accompany one or both her parents to Sweden or DK on an official visit and have a few roles to practice in a foreign setting. Where she again would be among friends and any mistakes will be forgiven.

The reason I have omitted the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain is that the Nordic monarchies help each other when new members needs practice. We have seen that many times. For example we saw it with Daniel when he was new on the job.

Anyone know why Magnus was not wearing orders but Marius Borg was?

I thought Marius Borg Høiby only received commemorative medals, not orders. Can anyone confirm that?

They were looking at this (link).

More photos of the ballroom in post 300 BTW.

They were also looking at the choir at the gallery.

Stunning!

Well, not quite. I think many Crown Princes as well as their wives assumed this order long before they ascended the throne; both parents of Princess Ingrid already have this order, too. Even Märtha Louise received it a long, long time ago as a young Princess - and she will never be a head of state...

The King of Sweden also awarded CP Haakon (although he already was the immediate heir to the norwegian throne, of course) the Order of Seraphim when he was just 20.

When it comes to your remark about IAs possible taking part in major royal functions I think that would be highly unlikely for the next few years until she has finished her studies, graduated or something.
My guess is that the Princess will appear from time to time at royal jubilees, anniversaries or birthdays, but will mainly concentrate on her education in the near future. I guess her parents will also do everything they could to shield her from royal duties and the public spotlight as long as possible!
Everything will change for her, of course, when she has finished university and The King has died some day.

Also technically without the Prince of Wales too but that would be very odd lol.

This picture didn't include all direct heirs bit the youngest heirs in each family as both Elisaberh and Amalia are first in line while Ingrid, Estelle and Charles are second. So George would be the one missing (as well as Joseph-Wenzel and Jacques next to the other metioned heirs: Christian and Leonot).

Marius is not wearing an order. The difference between the brothers is is in the type of costume. Marius is wearing the traditional white tie outfit while Sverre Magnus, as a minor, is not.

The family picture showed this best.

I want a fancy dancing party with peers and friends for IA, but there's no guarantee what pandemic restrictions will actually allow.

I'm glad she got it, even in lovely June. What a brilliant evening (and I hope it was fun).

The "heirs" photograph is not okay because Christian, Leonor, Jacques, William & George and Josef-Wenzel are not there.

Princess Ingrid already hosted a smaller event aged 16 when she guided the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge around her sculpture park.

Correction - Ingrid was 14.

She was 14 at the time, wasn't she? It was 4 years ago.

Although I think she did it with Sonja tagging along, so she may have yet to do a true solo hosting duty. Still more to come from The Princess.

:previous: He has the King's silver jubilee medal from 2016.

Video of it here (link).

We are live inside the palace for some entertainment (the ball will be private BTW).
Watch the NRK-link in post 300.
Thank you. I would have thought that for family events he could have worn it

The heirs photo is just too cute with little Charles..

The "heirs" photograph is not okay because Christian, Leonor, Jacques, William & George and Josef-Wenzel are not there.

Of course it would have been lovely if all of the above had been there-but they were not.

So the Heirs who did come took a photo together and I think it's a beautiful one.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra was very poised and confident.
It would be a Joyous occasion if Princess Elisabeth of Belgium has a brand new tiara.

This is the biggest version of the photo of the heirs so far, there you can see Estelle's headband a little better
https://image.svenskdam.se/estellei...4622468&width=1600&height=1023&compression=80

A headband matching the belt on her dress.
The headband and belt look like sprigs off CP Victoria's gown. A sweet but not cloying gesture.

Watching the princess's speech, she is indeed extremely relaxed and comfortable as a public speaker.
She seems to have been well prepared for her future role and is both comfortable and confident delivering her speech. That is one thing I have always admired about Victoria and Daniel, they are bringing up their daughter in a natural way but having her present at many official engagements. I think growing into the future is so much better than being deluged at 18 as Victoria was.

Then perhaps it was not ironic, but either Princess Ragnhild's way of apologizing or Princess Ragnhild's way of ensuring the future Queen Regnant of Norway would be as regal and suitable as flipping possible. (Or both.)
Not a triumph of fate, but a triumph of Princess Ragnhild's personal wish that the tiara be given to Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

Not an apology nor fate but rather a royal who sees no need for a tiara in the future of her children and their children, but as a royal of her time, she has returned a family heirloom to the family. Ingrid-Alexandra wears it well and the top of the loops seem to create a halo effect, very lovely.

That is not to say that time and family had healed all wounds, In fact, I rather think they had. And, what a remarkable gift to mark I-A's majority than presenting her with such a beautiful tiara that she wears like a Queen. I have to admit I was initially surprised at the reuse of gowns but then again, a great show of couture straight out of the fashion houses would not be sympathetic to the people of Norway.

The world is coming out of a worldwide pandemic and looks to be heading into a worldwide recession. Now is not the time for conspicuous consumption and many others present had "shopped their closet" or in I-A's case, their mother's closet". I loved CP Mary's tiara and gown very much and hey, what can you say about "big bird".

Still wondering if there was any significance to all the Greek and Bulgarian young folks being there besides family friendship....

I don't think so. Rosario Nadal and Pavlos of Greece are both godparents to Prince Sverre Magnus. Naturally, they are all friends.

Queen Letizia and Marie Chantal have already coincided in public events, they were at the memorial for Prince Philip of Edinburgh, unfortunately, I have the feeling that they have no relationship, and even worse, their husbands, they do not appear to have a good relationship, that is sad :sad:.King Felipe is the godfather of the baptism, his attendance is justified, and I imagine that Queen Letizia will not go attend because she has events on her agenda. The reason for her non-attendance is not Marie Chantal.
Isn’t this the day that Leonor is returning from school? As a mom, I think it is more important for Letizia to be there for her. No one seems to be upset that Phillipe didn’t attend. Felipe is her godfather.

Indeed, the most common is during state visits or official visits.

But I'm not surprised that IA was awarded the Order of the Elephant. Her father received the same order from Queen Margrethe on his 18th birthday on July 20th 1991 (which she attended).

Also Crown Princess Victoria received the Order of the Elephant on her 18th birthday on July 14th 1995, that time probably handed over by Queen Ingrid. At that day she also received the Order of St Olav from her godfather King Harald.

King Carl Gustaf awarded the Order of the Seraphim to Crown Prince Frederik and Haakon on June 2nd 1993. So not their 18th birthdays, but they are at least in the twenties, and not during a state visit.
