It's used affectionately. I would call him a nerd if he were on a ship, or a bus, or in a cardboard box.
Young Haakon Magnus was seemingly a bit shy and reticent. Plus he had glasses. Considering he's completely changed his image from then to now, I'm not sure Haakon is so fond of the way he used to appear.
I at least think he was very cute. But nerdy.
