The king accepted the resignation of PM Di Rupo & his government and started the first round of consultations.

The big winner of the elections is the Flemish seperatist party, which became th largest party of the country. The party's leader Bart de Wever was received at the Palace of Laeken.

King Filip has accepted the resignation of Belgium's Federal Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo. The Flemish nationalist victor of Sunday's general election, Bart De Wever, was the first party leader the king asked to see.
It was shortly after 11am that the prime minister arrived at the royal palace to tender his government's resignation, the custom in Belgium on the day after the general election. At 12:08pm the palace released a communique announcing that King Filip had accepted the resignation.

Nationalist parties seem to sweep some of the European countries. Is Mr Bart De Wever going to be the next Prime Minister?
Hopefully negotiations/consultations will yield results, and Belgium will have effective government.

Before they rule they are 'new' and after 4 years in government voters will be as disillusioned with them as with the other parties.

And these populist parties usually lose their popularity after they are in government. Before they rule they are 'new' and after 4 years in government voters will be as disillusioned with them as with the other parties.

It would be ironic if the King had to appoint as prime minister the leader of a party that campaigns for an independent Flemish republic.

I'm not a Belgian but I have to say I'm quite relieved by the news...populists usually talk the talk but don't walk the walk

and now what? is there already any speculation about a possible new government? or will there be new elections?

King Filip has appointed Charles Michel (MR, the Walloon liberal party) as the new informateur.

There will be no new elections as far as I know. Last time, it took our politicians more than 500 days to build a government, without new elections. Also, new elections would mean more votes for NVA I think, because other parties made it impossible for De Wever to get a consensus. It will only benefit them, with the same results as this time: although they win the elections, no-one wants to rule with NVA without strong conditions.

His Majesty The King has sworn in his first Cabinet. What struck me, like the Investiture in 2013, was the eh... somewhat sloppiness shown by the ministers (on the News it was visible). During the Investiture the ladies and gentlemen parliamentarians and ministers already were not too bothered to do something extra in dresscode.

Now during this Investure, the ministers stood in an impressive gallery but their presentation was not that of showing a too great feel for decorum (different colours of costumes, ministers standing with the arms crossed or studying the ceiling while a colleague makes the oath). Some ministers raised the hand, others did not. Some ministers needed to read the ultra-short sentence from a paper, apparently it was too difficult to do it by heart... It all looked a bit clumsy, I am afraid to say. King Philippe did it nicely, however. It remains strange for me that the "calvinistic" Netherlands seems to have more feeling for restranined decorum than the Belgians.

It is great that Belgium has a new government.
Unlike Mr Elio Di Rupo, Prime Minister Charles Michel looks odd and uncomfortable in his suit.

Well, it is a relief that Belgium has a new Government - I like the swearing in ceremony and feel that it is an important function publicly seen between the ministers and the head of state.
I must agree with Duc_et-Pair with what he says as I certainly wouldn't dream of standing in front of any head of state with my arms folded!

Finally, after the Elections of May 26th 2019 (!), Belgium has a new intended Government.

It is a coalition of seven parties. It immediately draws fierce opposition from the two biggest parties in Parliament (two Flemish nationalist parties).

The opposition says: "A Government without a Dutch-speaking majority led by the leader of the seventh largest fraction?" The Dutch-speaking part form 60% of the Belgian population, pay 70% of the Belgian taxes and produce 80% of the Belgian export.

Because extremes are joined in this seven-party-coalition (socialists, liberals, greens and a few christian-democrats) many experts in media expect an infighting Cabinet.

The King is not yet there to take the Oath from the new Government: first the seven parties need to nominate ministers.

After this it is the word to the parties' congresses. Because it is digital in Covid-times, it will not be the usual congresses with militants showing up to shore their party leadership by rasing hands in the open. Now the word is to the members of these seven parties, to vote from their secluded homes. They can still torpedo this intended coalition because of they expect to be eaten alive by the fierce opposition.
