King Philippe and Government Formations; 2014 -

The king accepted the resignation of PM Di Rupo & his government and started the first round of consultations.

The big winner of the elections is the Flemish seperatist party, which became th largest party of the country. The party's leader Bart de Wever was received at the Palace of Laeken.

Nationalist parties seem to sweep some of the European countries. Is Mr Bart De Wever going to be the next Prime Minister?
Hopefully negotiations/consultations will yield results, and Belgium will have effective government.

That all depends if he wants to join the government or not. A coalition of several parties needs to be formed for a majority. And these populist parties usually lose their popularity after they are in government. Before they rule they are 'new' and after 4 years in government voters will be as disillusioned with them as with the other parties.

It would be ironic if the King had to appoint as prime minister the leader of a party that campaigns for an independent Flemish republic.

Bart De Wever was received by King Philippe again today, June 25, to present the final report on the discussions on the possibilities of forming a Belgian government coalition. As no coalition has been formed so far, Bart De Wever requested to be relieved of his duties as informateur, King Philippe granted the request.

I'm not a Belgian but I have to say I'm quite relieved by the news...populists usually talk the talk but don't walk the walk

and now what? is there already any speculation about a possible new government? or will there be new elections?

King Filip has appointed Charles Michel (MR, the Walloon liberal party) as the new informateur.

There will be no new elections as far as I know. Last time, it took our politicians more than 500 days to build a government, without new elections. Also, new elections would mean more votes for NVA I think, because other parties made it impossible for De Wever to get a consensus. It will only benefit them, with the same results as this time: although they win the elections, no-one wants to rule with NVA without strong conditions.

As far as I understand, the Cabinet had a meeting with Philippe and he will speak to the Belgian people at 18h, all networks will broadcast his message.

His Majesty The King has sworn in his first Cabinet. What struck me, like the Investiture in 2013, was the eh... somewhat sloppiness shown by the ministers (on the News it was visible). During the Investiture the ladies and gentlemen parliamentarians and ministers already were not too bothered to do something extra in dresscode.

Now during this Investure, the ministers stood in an impressive gallery but their presentation was not that of showing a too great feel for decorum (different colours of costumes, ministers standing with the arms crossed or studying the ceiling while a colleague makes the oath). Some ministers raised the hand, others did not. Some ministers needed to read the ultra-short sentence from a paper, apparently it was too difficult to do it by heart... It all looked a bit clumsy, I am afraid to say. King Philippe did it nicely, however. It remains strange for me that the "calvinistic" Netherlands seems to have more feeling for restranined decorum than the Belgians.
