Watercolours of HRH

I thought it might be fun to share our impressions of the watercolour works of the Prince. For me, it is impossible to choose a particular favorite one, though I have a kind of preference for his paintings from Provence and Tuscany. I also like to look at a rather intriguing one of a castle in Turkey. I confess, though, that I have only one book of his works and have not taken the time to observe any examples of his work in other sources.

I also love the beautiful books where he does the original pencil sketches. I wonder if he adds the paint into the books, or if he transfers the sketch to canvas and then adds the paint on the canvas.

There are 7 examples. He seems to have a real love of landscape, and an eye for patterns. He's coming along nicely with his skies, I think.

Thank you Princesskaimi. Charles is quite talented as an artist and I had read somewhere that his favorite medium was watercolor. I recently viewed some of the works his father the Duke of Edinburgh had produced and that is where Charles' talent comes from. That, and considering his mother's family line has had many talented artists.

I think Charles' watercolour paintings are really very beautiful and the colours he uses are very cleverly mixed to create natural, simple and calming images of landscapes. My father used to paint using watercolour and it's not I think an easy medium to use, but the most amazing and ethereal paintings can be produced.

He is quite talented, and watercolour is not an easy medium (I don't think there are any easy artistic media, actually). He does use color very well, and yes, in a very calming style. His love of pure countryside comes across, but there's certainly more in his art than merely wanting to capture what a photo would capture, he's an artist. I hope he continues to pursue this talent, he seems to be coming into his own as a water colourist.

I think he would love the coastal landscapes of Hawaii and Central/Northern California, given his palette and his feel for nuanced colors.

He has been known to donate his watercolors occasionally to charity to be auctioned off. They go for quite a bit of money. I have seen several and he is quite proficient at it. He is not the only royal painter. Czar Nicholas also excelled at water colors. Great thread! Would love more images of his drawings too! Thanks!

I thought that this was the most appropriate thread for this article, so I'm posting it here. Feel free to move if there's a better place for it.

Apparently, Prince Charles has been interested in painting since he was a very young child. While sitting for a portrait, he was more interested in paints and brushes than the toys the artist provided.

Its very hard to find pictures of his work. One of the links above do not work for me. From what I could see he is very impressive. Surely its not all watercolor? The one of the castle - Sandringham - probably my favorite along with the sky scapes - has an oil look to it.

He seems to have inherited his talent from his ancestress, Queen Victoria.

I have always admired Prince Charles's watercolors! That is a very difficult medium in which to work- were any of this royal ancestors artistically talented? I seem to remember queen Victoria's sketches being posted recently.

Self-portrait is indeed difficult. It has to be that, though, given the site - wouldn't you say? The face is very interesting - has captured something essential, something true. Not easy to do.

Thank you for the link. His Highness is indeed a very gifted painter. I love the paintings of Sandringham and Balmoral. Simply beautiful.
