I recall that before Diana became involved with the Al-Fayeds, he was found guilty of bribing members of Parliament.
Yes. He was trying to get British citizenship but that failed. Plus his last name isn’t Al-Fayed but Fayed, he wasn’t nicknamed Phony Pharaoh for a reason. Similar to how there are Germans with von in their last names indicating nobility.

BBC Press Release
The BBC indicated its intention to donate to charity the sales proceeds derived from the 1995 Panorama interview with Diana, Princess of Wales. The BBC has now done so.

A sum of £1.42million has been divided equally between seven charities linked with the Princess. They are Centrepoint, English National Ballet, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, The Leprosy Mission, National Aids Trust, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and The Diana Award.*

These donations come from the BBC’s commercial revenue and not from the Licence Fee.**

The BBC has apologised for the circumstances under which the interview was procured.*
