Earl Spencer's books are non-fiction, not "novels." I'm a librarian, and there is a difference: a novel is a work of fiction. Lord Spencer has a degree in history from Oxford University and his historical works have been very well received from academics and the public.

I have read Charles Spencer's book The Spencers: a Personal History of an English Family. It is excellently written.

I am in particular interested in "The White Ship"...

Does Earl Spencer write in complicated English or rather in a more basic and understandable one? I don't want to buy a book that I hardly understand and which only gets dusty in the shelf...
