Great pictures of Diana and Charles! Thanks for posting them, maryamj.:flowers: I like the picture of them looking at the jewelry in the 5th picture when they went to India.

Does anyone know when picture 034 was taken or what the occasion was? From her hairstyle, it looks like it might have been 1986.

IMO Diana made many compromises to be royal, she married a man she knew loved another woman and I do believe she knew there were several stories about her over hearing phone converstions and small gifts. She swore she would marry only once and never divorce I believe she compronised this promise to herself smilply because her name was already on the tea towels. I don't doubt that she truely loved Charles but I do think she was in engrossed by his title.

IMOA, Diana was in love with the Prince of Wales and not in love with Charles the man.:flowers:

I think many see it that way Sky.

I think many see it that way Sky.

I never saw it that way. I have always believed that she loved him. But this illusion she had of Charles being her knight in shining armour really did cloud her judgement of him. Diana naively thought she could make him love her the way she loved him but in the end she just got hurt.

Anyway this really has nothing to do with the Princess' current news.

I did not sayI agreed as you can see in my post above, just that I think many people saw it that way! There are alot of diffrent opinions on this subject we could go on for days.....

Lady Ann...I was just thinking the same thing. I might have to take a trip to Phily.

I think Diana was in love with Charles the man, but a romanticized version of Charles. I truly believe if they had dated a while longer, they would have either broken up or gotten to know each other truly. Its hard to date via the press.

Yes, I think so too. One writer, I think it was Robert Lacey, suggested that it was during the Australian tour before they were married that Charles really "fell in love" with Diana. And there, Lacey suggests, that it was because of the press coverage about her.

I am sure that Charles has made peace with the past.

COLUMN: Charles and Diana will be a hard act to follow

I don't think Prince William and Ms Middleton want to emulated Prince Williams's father's and mother's reign. He is his own man and he will let the press so far in. BTW their walkabouts were very successful just like the Prince of Wales and the late, Diana, Princess of Wales.:flowers:

Me too. Charles made mistakes and So did Diana. But lookking at some of the eary pics of them together, You cant deny that there was love at one point. Mutual love.

I'm not so sure. Mutual love is when each person feels roughly the same way towards the other. Merely having Love towards each other doesn't make it mutual. It needs to be roughly the same kind of love.

Brotherly lovely is not the same as wifely love - it's all love, but not the same. Was he ever in love with her, the way she was in love with him? I don't know.

Was she really in love with him - did she know him? I don't know.

But I don't think they felt the same intense way about each other (or else they could have made it work).

How far apart were they cousins?

I heard Charles said was it the tv interview or was it the book(?) that he never truly loved Diana idk if that's true. But there had to have been SOMETHING there in the early years. Yes they were very good at faking it but the early years certainly when they thought people weren't looking the kisses/touches seemed genuine.

I can't help but think, thaf if they could have lent their talents to eachothers variuos projects, they could have been the "Dynamic Duo" of the BRF.

Just think if Charles instead of seing Dianas popularity as a negative reflection of him, had included her to give more attention to his many good causes , then we would have been eating organicly 20 years ago:flowers:.

At Kensington Palace now there's an exhibit in Room of the Dancing Princesses; it includes a series of fairy tales.
The one for Diana is called Manual for a Princess and I believe it sums up her life quite well.

Fairytales | Enchanted Palace

It is known that Charles in the beginning was very proud of Diana and the response she got from the public. But that changed when Diana started to use her fame and influence to hurt Charles, to upstage him and overall to show that she was the better and more important part of the "heir to the Throne"-couple.We know now that at the time the public = media opinion changed towards Diana, she was influencing it. So what chance had Charles? And why did Diana not care for the environment? Or if she cared, she did less so than she disliked her husband when it comes to his projects.

Oh definetly, if Charles was like JFK who to my knowledge loved his wife being the glamorous one in the relationship things would have been different. But as the marriage soured and Charles started to resent Diana's popularity and she was very angered by Charles, Diana used it against him. She upstaged him easily. If they were mature people Charles and Diana could've been a power couple, it quite sad.

Diana once said that she and Charles would have made a fantastic team, and that is very much the truth. In hindsight, if they were both receptetive to criticism and could respect the best in each other, it could have ended so differently.

Charles as the older, more mature person should have been like JFK. My fantastic wife, isn't she great, etc. He could have used her popularity in a different way instead of being jealous of it. What Charles should have realized (but probably does in hindsight) that younger and prettier (especially in a dress) always brings more attention. I honestly think it would have been like that if he had marries Amanda, Sarah or anyone. Young and pretty always sells magazines. The press is always going to be interested in what dress a woman is wearing.

Diana as the younger flashier wife, should have been like my fantastic husband, isn't he great. I don't really understand some of his issues with the environment and the like, but I respect him. It would have been nice if she understood that he was jealous of the attention showed to her. And instead of turning it against him, tried to focus some of the attention on him and his causes.

Not trying to be sarcastic or anything but there you go. I think they loved each other but didn't like or understand each other. For Charles it wasn't young puppy love, he had already had that. He was looking for mature love. Charles didn't have an understanding on the role that Diana's childhood (and her parent's marriage) had on her. Diana had young pupply love that could have matured but wasn't given a chance because of the issues in their marriage. Diarist said in a thread about Sarah, Duchess of York, that Sarah never understood what a proper marriage was about based on her parents (their marriage and subsequent relationships). And I think that was the case for Diana as well.

In addition, at the core of any releationship is friendship...and they definitely didn't have that.

Personally, I don't think that Diana would still want her supporters to be bashing Charles and Camilla now. Time does have a way of healing bitterness, particularly after there's been a death. Both Diana and her marriage to Charles belong to the historians now, and I think that there's enough evidence available for them to be able to make fair judgments about Charles and Diana. William and Harry, who are her living legacy, seem to be doing alright and I'm sure she'd be enormously proud of how they're doing now that they've become their own men and public personalities. I am bothered both by those who think that the young Diana was a scheming shrew out to "get her man" and by those who see her as having no fault at all in the breakdown of her marriage and the lowering of her reputation in later years. The same with Prince Charles. I don't think that he was a victim in his marriage, nor do I think that he was completely cold and heartless. People are more complex than that.

Great post, Mermaid 1962, but you know, I have a strong sense of an ongoing attempt to rewrite history, as if by so doing we can make that doomed marriage work. I clearly recall saying, when they married, that there was much more that thirteen chronological years that seperated them, but at least she could be certain that she was entering the one marriage in the world that COULDN'T end in divorce!!!-I'm certain that I wasn't alone in those words. There was this shy GIRL,barely out of teenage years, prettier, by far, than the beautiful, powerful WOMAN which she presented herself as being in later years, and she GLOWED with love and, I felt, reverence and admiration for the man she had just married. I, and I suspect, many others, pushed aside the memory of this man asking , of love, "whatever that word means." NEVER, for one moment, did I believe the marriage could fail, I wanted their marriage to be a shining example to us all. I became saddened and angered by her disillusionment and his indifference. Even now, all these years on, I wish it had been different.

Then let's hope that her son and new D-I-L, get to have the fairytale marriage. The new duchess have been given time to get to know the family and the life as a royal gradually, having known Will for the better part of 10 years. He himself said at their engagement interview, that lessons had been learned from the past and that they were careful not to repeat that.
