Princess Caroline and husbands part II

Well Junot didn't come from a particularly shabby background either.

And her changed more mature attitude didn't stop her from being involved with three more untitled men.

However, I still don't believe she is not divorcing because of her title. She gains nothing from it.
so what on earth is she staying married ot such a man as Ernest for? THeir child is grown up and was legitimised by the marriage. She and Ernest have not been togehter for years... but she's stayed married to him

Well, rumor has it that she still keeps in touch with him, helping him discreetly through his rough times... As i said it's just a rumor, but it keeps popping up... :ermm:

As I said further up the thread possibly complex financial reasons and because she doesn't need to. I doubt she's planning another marriage.

I don't doubt she enjoys being HRH but I just don't think she's that vacuous for it to be the reason she remains married.

But the truth is we don't know - and are unlikely to ever find out.

seems to me odd that she got involved with him.. His problems/bad behaviour were there I'm sure before they married. She wasn't a kid, and its not that difficult to avoid pregnancy.

I remember reading an interview with Rainier at the time of Ernst and Caroline's marriage, LIFE magazine maybe or some other respected outlet. Rainier talked about himself and Grace, and Monaco, and lots of different things, and when he was asked about Caroline's new marriage, he said Ernst's personality was very endearing, with a great sense of humor, and he hoped that they would have great joy in the marriage (those are quotes, I remember things he said I the interview distinctly, because it was nice to hear Rainier so relaxed).

He is also quoted to have remarked " At least he is one of us!"?

Did her life really change from being HSH to HRH though?

Yes she did, but because she was active wife of a highly ranked royal.
Since she wed Prince EA (and became HRH) she was present in almost all royal events, not because she was representing Monaco, but because she was accompanying a very close relative of almost all the European Royal Families. As HSH of Monaco, she is the sister of the ruler, but their blood bonds with the royal families are very distant.

If course she stopped doing it Since they are separated.

Oh I see! Thanks! Random but why does it seem like Mónaco wanted in the past to be accepted by all the European royal families? I don’t see the Liechtenstein princely family doing that and they are also a principality.

Because Monaco was not a very well respected place. The family were rich but the shadiness of its being very much dependent on the casino, the chequered marital history of hte royal family, the marraige to Grace Kelly who was an actress, meant that many of the Euroepean royal families thought poorly of it.

Perceptions can be strange. E-A's HRH is not recognized in the Federal Republic of Germany and he is a pretender to the throne of a small German kingdom that disappeared in 1866 (I mean, the Kingdom of Hanover). In the best case scenario, even considering E-A's dual claim to the Duchy of Brunswick, his family ceased to be a sovereign dynasty in 1918.

Caroline's HSH on the other hand is legally recognized in a sovereign state where she is currently third in the line of succession.

Still, people seem to value Caroline's title of pretense as Princess of Hanover above her actual substantive title in Monaco.

Except among German and related royals I can't see what the status was. Germany hasn't been a monarch for 100 years, and IMO it will never return. Caroline's family are at least rulers in Monaco, small as it is and its not as if Eernest is a very attractive individual. Seems like an HRH will cover a lot of problems, and It seems to me pretty bad that Rainier apparently said that "at least Ernest is one of us". is that what he considers the most important thing in a marriage?

Lol! The irony! Its not like all the European monarchies were made perfect, but I get it. At least now Monaco is accepted.

Will rumor has it Grace wanted Caroline to marry Ernst so that they would be accepted by the other royal family. She even had desires for Caroline to marry Charles.

I doubt it. Charles could not have married Caroline because she was Roman Catholic.. and I'm sure Grace would not have been too happy with her daughters marrying someone with addiction problems and the sort of behaviour that Ernest was up to.
She might have wanted Monaco to form an alliance with some Catholic dynasty but there were very few at the time.. and Im sure she would have preferred respectability to royalty...

Realistically if they were to marry would Caroline have to convert? Well of course Grace wanted respectability from the other European Royals but she did get it since they respected her by showing up to her funeral. She did a lot.

Anyways on Caroline, her and Ernst are over yet won’t divorce?

Well, she is still a Catholic and divorce is not the best thing to do, though she was ready to ignore church when marrying Stefano.
Being a HRH seemed to mean a lot to her, because she received a lot more attention from royals than ever before. Unless she had been friends with Lagerfeld not many showed interest in her.
And there is still a lot more complicated things considering the role of Ernst's daughter, her heritage, position etc.
Though many would be surprised if her youngest child went to marry royalty, you never know. The reputation of Ernst might be bad, but his title sounds still good in Germany.

But Ernest is very far from respectable. Im sure she would rather have had Caroline marry a decent well to do middle class man who would behave properly and treat her well.. than the playboy Junot and Ernest. And Im sure she would not wish for Caroline to change her religion....(not that there was ever the slightest chance of Caro's marrying Charles)...

its hard to say what is holding her in the marriage other than having the HRH..so presumably it does mean a lot to her to meet the German "ex royals".. and ot have the title.

Are you saying friends with Lagerfeld opened doors for her?

I guess you are right that her marriage to Ernst has opened doors for her in ways it hadn’t been before. She got more attention with royalty so I get it. But since their separation, it seems like other royal families don’t pay much attention to her...

Grace would have loved Stefano. I think that’s Caroline’s true love.

Im not sure Grace would have loved Stefano, he seems to have been rather a playboy... but he did seem to care for Caroline and they were happy... I think that Grace would have been less than happy with most of her children's love lives. Albert's children, Stephanie's short lived marriages etc.

I think Grace would have sympathized with Stefano. I think Stefano was Princess Caroline's great love. He was the only man who managed to make Caroline happy and who gave her three beautiful children.
In fact, the Grimaldis have always suffered a lot for love. Caroline and Stéphanie are now single, after two divorces.
Fortunately, their children Andrea, Pierre and Louis seem to have found the women of their lives alongside Tatiana, Beatrice and Marie and look happy.
Charlotte took longer and went through many failed relationships, but now she seems to be fine with Dimitri.
Let's see what the future holds for Alexandra, Pauline and Camille.

He may have been.. but it seems odd that she then turned to such an unattractive character as Ernest, largely it seems to get an HRH.
I think that Grace would have been disapproving of her children's relationships which were pretty messy in the 1980s.

Don’t know where you got that rumor about him from, but what a mother desires is for their children to be happy and Stefano made Caroline happy and gave her 3 beautiful children.

Well Monaco became messy during the 80s and 90s unfortunately.

There were also rumors about Grace's desire for Albert to marry one of Spanish princesses (Elena or Cristina). Grace and Sofia of Spain were very close and since both families are catholic, there wasn't any obstacle. After Grace's death, Caroline and Gromaldi family were distant from Spanish royal family.

It seems she also bonded with EA's sons; so that might also factor into her decision that she sees THEM as part of her family.

It seems like after Grace’s death, they weren’t as close to all the royal families that Grace cultivated a relationship with. I always was in assumption that after her death, Monaco lost that American glamour and just became another European royalty.

I didn’t know Grace wanted Albert to marry a Spanish princess.

It is true. I also think that it was in Grace's time that the Grimaldi were closer to other European royal families.
It seems that after Grace's death, the Grimaldis were unable to maintain all of these relationships with European royalty, especially with the royal families of Spain and England.

I observed the same thing. I thought she got the most respect from people than the rest of the Grimaldi's. I can see why a marriage with Ernst would be appealing to Caroline though...

It is exactly the opppsite. The current Prince of Monaco is at almost all international royal events, while we hardly saw Prince Rainier at any international royal wedding, jubilee, investiture, whatever. Also the royal turn-out at Prince Albert's wedding was far bigger than at any wedding of any Monegasque prince before him. So the relationships with all European royal families have improved and deepened, exactly under Albert!
