According to the royal family Twitter it's a notice of birth.

It’s a very different style of “document,” when I looked back to compare it to what was posted on the easel after George’s birth. Today’s reads like a statement issued by the Queen (“The Queen and the Royal Family are delighted...”). George’s was formatted almost like a certificate from the doctors (“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered...”). I haven’t found older examples to be able to see if the format has changed depending on who gave birth or if this is a big departure.

Whatever they call it, it's not an official announcement of the birth so doesn't need any doctors' signatures. It's letting people know the Queen & family's response to the news. The wording is quite different to the official announcements of previous births, which were endorsed by doctors' signatures.

Prince Louis has a maternal boy cousin born in the last year, Pippa’s son. And now a paternal boy cousin!

Who officially gets an easel announcement in the RF anyway ? I assumed the Earl of Dumbarton wouldn’t get one, so maybe you are right that was a different type of announcement.

Technically the baby isn’t royal (even though his parents are) so technically they feel a more familial approach makes sense, perhaps?

Anyways, a bit of nice "behind the scene" on Harry's mini press conference.
Quote:
Away from the cameras his relaxed, easy going demeanour revealed the duke was still on a high after witnessing the miracle of childbirth, but confessed “I’ve had about two hours’ sleep”.
The duke even apologised about the short notice for the press conference and joked with a cameraman who said sorry for not wearing a tie, telling him “you’re a cameraman, you can get away with it”.

I think they are just being a little sneaky because whatever they planned has gone off so well that they want to use it again for the future.

I know how royal births have been announced in the past - I've seen plenty of them over the years. :)

It's interesting that they delayed the announcement that Meghan was in labour until the start of the North American business day, especially since the baby was eight hours old at the time of the initial announcement.
Incidentally, the royal family channel on YouTube has a slightly longer version of Harry's interview this morning, in which you can see him walk into the stable courtyards.

A baby boy! Congrats Harry and Meghan! It seems like almost everyone was hoping for a girl or thought it would be a girl. But I've been on the boy train since the beginning. It's going to be so awesome seeing Harry with a son!
What a nice surprise, too, to see him come out and speak. His joy and pride was palpable and just makes you love him even more.

In addition to the royal family and the Spencer’s, there may have been some people in North America who they felt should hear word of the baby directly from them before it was all over the news.

That's probably true, loonytick. I've just gotten so used to waking up to announcements about royal babies that it really stood out to wake up, check the news, see nothing, and then find out at 9am about the baby.

They may have waited to coincide with the American breakfast shows. Gayle King arrived in Britain today.

Lucky for you! I had a very fast delivery of my son and it did damage that still gives me trouble, 17 years later. My doctor has said several times that most women's bodies are made to take a little time with the process, so a rush of a delivery is often...brutal.
Hopefully Meghan's wasn't the brutal kind of fast and she's recovering nicely. If nothing else she surely needs some sleep after laboring in the dark hours!

According to Richard Palmer
"No signatures of medical staff because the couple don’t want the public to know who attended at the birth"
