Another Lycra-moment for Mary... ?

It's basically a warm up for Tour de France.

At this time every year all the lycra-wrapped Tour-de-France-wanna-be's dust off their way-too-advanced-racing-bikes-for-their-talents-and-fitness and descend on the roads in droves.
Where they are a true menace to the traffic, not least in rural areas. Because they have problems comprehending that cars, tractors, horseriders and other cyclists also use the roads and the visibility is not always that great, especially if you race round a bend doing 50 km/h. And that it may not be that great an idea to ride three or four side by side on such a road.
There are times when I believe you should only be charged if you run over a cyclist twice. ;)

Anyway, riding across the Great Belt Bridge is quite a scenic trip and the weather is fine today, sunny, sensible temperature and not too much wind.
Will also give the gulls something new to look at.
You'd incidentally be surprised at how many birds there around a seventeen kilometer long bridge like that.
Birds ain't stupid, they navigate using highways and railroads and if you are a bird and want to cross an open stretch of water, follow the bridges. Also because if you need to do an emergency landing, it's preferable to land on a bridge and end up with dry feathers, than ditch in the sea.

This is the Great Belt Bridge, the short section (The high bridge) of the connection.
https://f.nordiskemedier.dk/2msmskh34wrpwjrb.JPG
There is an additional 11 km of low bridge.
https://www.visitnyborg.dk/sites/visitnyborg.com/files/2019-08/Storebæltsbroen.jpg

The island in the middle is a weather-station and reserve for nesting birds.

One stretch of the Tour de France will cross this bridge.

.

Yes, this is an official side event for Grand Départ Copenhagen and follows the same route as for 2nd stage of the Tour.

Nice! From their website "Based on the slogan "A bike race for everyone", the Tour de Storebælt gives*participants a unique opportunity to cycle all, or parts of, the same route as used for the 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2022."

That's great! Yes Mary must be thinking..more Lycra Frederik? Did you not hear anything from my speech?!?!

I read he was doing the 100km distance.

Eml

He must be very fit. All 3 races in the Royal Run last weekend and 100km cycle race this weekend. Good on you Frederik!

Not sure if this is the right thread, but interesting article about what based on my Google translate is about the different approach by M&F
https://www.bt.dk/royale/analyse-kongehuset-er-forandret-for-altid

Came across this video clip about the same thing

Interesting article that has a few points regarding the importance of the Royal family remaining apolitical but much of it is Jacob Heinel Jensen stirring the pot again. He seems very skilled at identifying issues that he can turn into scandals.

:previous: The lines between him reporting on events and his opinions are often very blurred...

However, other royal reporters have expressed similar views, in fact this article is almost ad verbatim what others have said.

And yes, M&F like all current and future regent couples have to change with the times.
The aloof monarch doesn't really appeal anymore. Monarchs with opinions and causes and standing up for these causes is the new fashion.
However, it also means that the monarch sometimes say something unfortunate or has an opinion you disagree with.
Something many people, including this reporter I suspect, can have problems accepting.

You can't call on the royals to make a stand, and them blame them afterwards for making a stand.

Good point Muhler. Monarchs can no longer just do the safe subjects and not speak out on anything. It just does not work

BT is still on it

A local newspaper reports that Mary watched a local pride parade in the town of Skagen, being among the onlookers. She was seen waving at the participants.
She was not there in an official capacity.

https://nordjyske.dk/nyheder/freder...yssede-stjernestoev-over-skagen-pride/3335406

No photos.

The paper reports that the CP family is in Skagen.

- Hardly surprising. M&F almost always spend some of their summer holiday at the northernmost tip of DK.

Presumably they went there after having spend a couple of days with QMII at Gråsten.

- The infamous Hellerup-week at Skagen ends this week. That's the annual event in week #29 where the jetsetters who live north of Copenhagen, all migrate to Skagen, to do pretty much the same things they do at home and with the same people.
The flashy cars and flashy behavior is watched with mild amusement by the locals, who quietly raise the prices during that week... :D
Seasoned German and Norwegian and Dutch too tend to avoid Skagen in mid-July to avoid being fleeced.
In order to look as authentic and scenic as possible some of the local don rubber boots, a full beard, a heavy knitted sweater (regardless of the weather) hands buried in their pockets, smoking a pipe and speaking in the most incomprehensible dialect possible they point at the seagulls while nodding knowingly. The Copenhagener-tourists love it! :D

But outside the Hellerup-week Skagen can only be recommended, albeit still a bit pricey! The fish-food restaurants are always worth a visit. And if you are fond of amber-jewellery you can find some really expensi... I mean exquisite things there.
And the locals now look almost normal, most speaking perfectly intelligible German, Norwegian and English.

Some photos. First from the Hellerup-week:

Fast cars = fast tickets.

And Skagen in general.

How nice to see them both enjoying a concert together. I think Mary was the one that has mentioned that father and son enjoy similar music.

Aha.

Have they relocated from Skagen to northern Zealand that fast?!?

They have spend a part of their summer holidays at Tisvildeleje or thereabouts often before.
So I wonder if Mary and the younger kids are in Skagen, while Frederik and Christian have made a detour to the festival.

How nice. A Danish Tour de France champion (already celebrated by prince Joachim and family yesterday) in the very first Tour that started in Denmark, so it makes sense for the crown prince to join the celebrations in Paris.

Crown Prince Frederik with the tour winner Jonas Vingegaard, his wife and child at the final of the Tour de France in Paris today, July 24:

** kongehuset instagram post **

From a historic Grand Départ in Denmark to stage wins at Magnus Cort, Mads Pedersen, Jonas Vingegaard and now a fantastic finish on the Champs-Élysées, where we could celebrate the tour's winner "Le Grand Danois" Jonas Vingegaard His energy, sportsmanship and willpower at this year's Tour de France has been exceptional to witness.

Congratulations on the victory and thank you for the great experience that the fight for the trophy has given us all in the month of July
(..)The Crown Prince.

And fully deserved.

Even though I may be slightly biased, it's my real impression that Vingegaard is a genuinely likable person and as such a good rolemodel.
It's good when the good guys win.

Very lovely photos! I saw photos of the PM at the Dutch Embassy party from yesterday evening, but none of Frederik.

Probably returning back to DK.

Tomorrow Vingegaard and his team will be celebrated in the Netherlands (will the NRF show up, I wonder?) and Wednesday Vingegaard will be celebrated big time in Copenhagen. And here we may see Frederik and perhaps his children again.

Oh that's right. I read the he rides for a Dutch team. Yes, there is a celebration for him at City Hall and then I believe all the Danish riders will be celebrated at Tivoli as well.

What a storybook ending to the TDF...not only are the first 3 stages held in Denmark to a huge success but a Danish rider wins the whole thing in spectacular fashion! There could not have been better outcome! Frederik must be doing cartwheels after all the time/hard work he put into getting the tour to Denmark and putting Denmark on the world stage of holding large events like this! AND a Danish rider wins? WOW!

The win of the Jumbo Visma-team has been in the works for many years - slowly building up year after year to the moment they would be able to win the Tour. They went into the Tour with two contenders but unfortunately one of them (Roglic) disjoined his arm/shoulder on the 5th stage but he continued on for about another week pretending he was still a thread to Pogacar (champion of the last two Tours) while now it seems he also broke two bones/ribs(?) in his back... When he finally was forced to leave the Tour he had significantly contributed to Vinegaard gaining a respectable time lead on Pogacar. And of course, they had Belgian/Flemish rider Van Aert in their team which according to Vinegaard (on the TdF podium) is the best rider of the world...

They (Jumbo Visma) almost won 2 years ago - for Roglic to be beaten by fellow-Slovenian rider Pogacar in the time trial on the second-to-last stage win. That's why they were very careful not to celebrate until after the final time trial this year - and in full after the Champs Élysées stage yesterday.

Probably returning back to DK.

I don't expect the Dutch royals to show up. They didn't show up for the celebration in Maastricht when Tom Dumoulin won the Giro but he was made a knight in the order of Orange Nassau because of it - at a later point in time he was invited for one of their lunches if I recall correctly (and of course he has been received at the palace after the last two Olympic Games in which he won a silver medal on the Time Trial both times).

It sure was.
Danish tourist associations are over the moon!

However, considering the undeniable success of letting the Tour start as far away as DK, I think it's likely Norway will make as serious bid as well. The Tour is just as big a thing in Norway as in DK!
Not sure how big it is in Sweden and Finland though, I'll let Finns and Swedes answer that question.

Good point. I believe the next TDF will start off in Spain (I cannot recall which City). That would be great for Norway!

Muhler - has there been any talk about how many people came from abroad to watch the tour in Denmark? Has any economic effect been calculated (I assume it will be)?

That was actually discussed on the news today.

It has been estimated that setting up and organizing as well as planning the Tour in DK has cost somewhere between 100-200 million DKK. = 20-30 million $.
To that comes the cost for locally arranged events, typically under the municipalities. So I think the costs in regards to positive PR and focus on DK as more than Copenhagen has more than paid for itself. It was a bonus that the weather was pretty good.
But just as importantly have been the influx of many thousands of Danish fans streaming to France (The Tour is always popular with Danish tourist, but this year many, many more went to France) and their positive attitude (and being easy to see. The Danes is no doubt the most flag-waving people in the world. Sorry, American members, you are amateurs in comparison.) has also created considerable goodwill. And who says no to paying tourists? That Vingegaard is a nice guy, with a pretty family and a good sense of sportsmanship is an added bonus. So yes, they are tap dancing with delight in the Foreign Ministry these days.
And I haven't even mentioned the other Nordic fans, who also went in support, not least the equally cycling-crazy Norwegians.

I can't say how much it meant in regards to people coming to DK for the first legs of the Tour. Apart from Norwegians and Swedes and some Germans too, I don't think it amounted to that much.
The gains here is more on a long-term basis, we shall see how many tourists from other parts of Europe will visit DK next summer and perhaps even more realistically the summer of 2024. (Because the next 6-9 months may be hard here in Europe!)

I think the summer of 2024 will be dominated by the summer Olympics in Paris, which (Fingers crossed) will be full of spectators after the last few Olympics being empty due to covid. I know that seeing comments from people in the US about the events/stages held in Denmark were overwhelmingly positive on all accounts, not the least of which was the outpouring of support and enthusiasm from the Danes! I have a feeling that Denmark may have been added to quite a few bucket lists to visit...I know for sure it is at the top of my list! ?!! The images of excited Danes at Tivoli and throughout the stage routes were beamed all over US Channels so anyone here that did not know about Denmark, does now..that's for sure! :D

I think the money paid up front to put on the stages in Denmark will pay for itself many times over in the long run!

Denmark can be very proud of the Grand Depart's success! And this will go down as a huge coup for Frederik IMO (if I may be so bold to say). Not to mention, the support given by the rest of the DRF as well in DK and France!
That's why I was very happy to see him in Paris yesterday and standing on that podium as well.

Today's posts about the family's summer holidays have been moved to the correct thread, see here.
