It was very different from Joachim and Alexandra's engagement announcement...for one thing Alex and Joachim were obviously in love and it was very warm. They hugged and they were very attentive to eachother. They kissed...hugged, the whole caboozle. Mary and Frederik seemed very uncomfortable with eachother, they didn't seem as happy as J&A...not as warm. Somewhat cold...detached...
Geezums, I've just looked over the photos that I haven't seen? My god! That woman was looking at the camera the whole time Freddie was trying to play pattycake! (Interesting euphemism...inside joke :)), moving on, geez, that woman seems a primadonna if I've ever seen one. My stars... , their affection seems to be luke-warm, freezing compared to the love Joachim displays for Alexandra. Ah, I guess we shouldn't compare the two, maybe there'll be nice pictures of the wedding..and not another one of Mary's little "Oh! Look at me!" shoots. How sad :o

Joachim and Alexandra kissed in their pressconferencs? Then why did Frederik And Mary hesitate to kiss?

Prince Joachim had a hug and a kiss for his future sister-in-law. Maybe he's just a kissy huggy kind of guy.

And if they're self-conscious types with an aversion for the public stuff, I take it you would prefer to see a lot of artificial 'gush' ?

For all those people who are complaining that Mary seems cold, I would love to see them try to speak a foreign language in front of this crowd.
Josefine posted this earlier and I thought it was worth showing again. Would you really shove your tongue down your fianceé's throat with this many cameras on you?

Good posting, Iasu,
And where you get so many people in a small room like this with all the hot lights, cameras and boom mikes, it gets hot pretty darned fast. Makes for (very) sweaty palms if hands are held !!!!

Well, we'll have to make allowances for that. Evil, really. Was it that bad at Joachim and Alexandra's announcement? Naw, probablement not, she married the "spare", Mary's marrying the "heir". :flower:

Why does Mary never smile in these posed portraits (referring to two posts up in the formal wear and official engagement photos with royal family and with her parents)? This is her engagement, she should be happy! Everybody else in this photo from the formal dinner has some degree of smile or warmth except for Mary. She seems to be putting off an above it all, "Let them eat cake" attitude. She will need to work on how she presents herself to the masses if she wants to remain popular. The Danes are very nice, friendly people with a very egalitarian society, on the whole. If she comes off as too high and mighty, she will not gain the acceptance of the people. A big part of what the people love about QMII, Frederik, and Alexandra is their warmth and natural attitude (regal and down to earth at the same time).
In her "Star Maker" course she complained of not having any good pictures of herself. So, perhaps she thinks she photographs better not smiling. However she said in one of her engagement interviews, it was more important to let people get a sense of who she is rather than just stumble along in Danish. I think the same theory should be applied to her photos. It's more important to let people get a sense of who she is or her emotions (ie: happiness) than to have a stoic picture that she may think is more glamorous, or what have you. Otherwise people will get the sense that the somewhat cold, stoic looking person in the picture is exactly who she is. Who knows, maybe it is...

Thanks Josefine for posting that new photo from the gala. I have to say though that picture just shows me that Mary is a calculating and cold person. Everyone else can manage a smile, even Frederik has a little smirk, and all she gives us is this higher than thou look. You would think she would be smiling since it is her day and that she said that she can finally be open about her love for Frederik. This pic gives me a feeling of her saying in her mind 'Yes, I got the prize!' It does not look to me like this is a woman who is in love with the person standing next to her.

Mary has a funny way of kinda half smiling, it sort of looks like a pucker for a kiss. I know I used to practice that look when I was 11 or 12 years old.
But if her natural self doesn't want to smile, then it would be better she be honest, otherwise it would seem fake. Somehow I get the impression from CP Fred that this whole engagement/marriage routine is a great put on, a mockery.
If Mary traded real love for a crown she got a raw deal, but of course it'll take her a long time to realize that.

Agree with all your points. This whole "wedding" thing is going to be a ball to watch.
Perhaps Mary doesn't smile because she was taught that in modeling class?

Wha? She sounds like she can barely speak English! And what is with that accent? It doesn't sound Australian; it sounds like she's faking an English accent.
And how long did it take her to find words to describe Fredrich? And they've been together how long and she can't find one thing she'd like to change?

She seemed so nervous, I thought she did real good to remember Frederick's name. I think it was the Queen Mum of England who got raked over the coals for an interview she gave soon after she got married, so she never gave another one.
Fredericks manners don't seem to have improved around Mary yet. Very strange. Plus referring to the gift given to him by the interviewer, Frederick said "I don't have this yet". When is he going to start using the word "we"? Doubly strange.

I think she sounds very much like an Australian friend of mine, who, like Mary, had Scottish parents. Perhaps you were expecting something a little more Crocodile Dundee?
I would like to make a suggestion. Try having a friend interview you on video and then watch the results. I have done this in media training and it can be a tremendously humbling experience.

imo, most of you ladies writing comments here, are too negative on Mary. Everytime I read an unpositive post, outright jealousy and the very essence of what cultured ladies don't want to portray about themselves comes to mind.
Frankly, I have read hardly anything positive and am of the opinion that you ladies are incapable of complimenting a lady who was in the right place in the right time (as opposed to the writers who were obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time).

I agree. This board is very negative. It takes the fun out of visiting when every other post says Mary is a cold shrew/Alexandra is a heavenly creature. Perhaps we could all try to be a little more empathetic? :flower:
