Crown Princess Mary's 50th birthday: February 5, 2022

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Thanks for trying. Regardless the kids looked pretty self-assured in responding to what they were asked. They are good in front of the cameras and press.

Video in BT article where you can hear part of their answers and Vincent talking. https://www.bt.dk/royale/kronprinsesse-mary-blev-roert-under-aabning-i-zoo

TV2 on Facebook posted an even better video of the twins answering questions. They are beyond precious.

I can help:)

Vincent: "it has been very nice (hyggeligt) to be here and exiciting to see the animals after such a long time. We havent been here for a long time. It was funny seeing all the different animals".

Josephine is asked how it was being with the penguins:

She answered: "It was very nice. It has always been a wish of mine to feed them, and then that wish came true, luckily!".

They are very good at answering press questions. Very confident!

I love the portrait. Very regal and serene. I also love the symbolism and the simplicity of it as the eye travels from left to right. It shows past, present and future. Just lovely.

The family looks fantastic. Too bad Christian could not attend due to school.

It has really been an abundance of riches in terms of the celebration of Mary's 50th. I must admit I am very pleasantly surprised. And, the week is not over yet!

Some nice videos from today:

Love what they have included in the exhibit.

Presumably. Or rather because she looks old enough to be addressed with formal You. But there is no rule as such. I'd say around eighteen or so it will be considered appropriate to start addressing young people with formal You.
Another journalist present might just as well have used the informal you.

Anyway, the painter has been inspired by the Danish gold-age painter (or Skagen-painter) Anna Ancher in regards to how the soft light falls on Mary.
The painter especially likes the soft spring-light we have in DK.
Mary was pleased saying that the artist had caught her on a very good day.
While Frederik pointed out that the painter had a good model.

And here are a few Anna Ancher paintings for comparison and to see where the Spanish painter found his inspiration.

:lol::lol: I loved Prince Frederik's response! Classic!

I love the painting - but I cannot make out the detail in that mirror. The tree in the shadows reminds me of the shadows of the Eucalyptus trees that we see in the late afternoons here in Oz - especially in autumn. It like I can see the gentle sway of trees and feel the gulley breezes the trees give - and after a good pouring of rain, the Eucalyptus scent the trees permeate throughout. It is truly one of the best things about being in Australia - amongst others.

It isn't a mirror. It is the modern art painting in Mary's office/study at home. I agree the portrait is beautiful.

Question: Did anyone watch the TV2 program/documentary that aired on 1/31 that would be so kind as to provide a summary?

thank you in advance!

I guess I hadn't taken too much notice of that modern art painting before! Thank you for pointing it out to me :flowers:

I like this portrait! It shows Mary's elegance, and also serenity and calmness that comes with her age. The artist did not make her look like a teenage girl, but appropriately an elegant 50yo woman, I respect that.

And the portrait shows her in her (relatively) modern office, and not another grand, luxurious old-style room in the palace, which is very reflective of her time as a Crown Princess so far.

Frederiksborg Castle is on my list of must see places along with Rosenborg castle. The artist has captured the essence of the Crown Princess. 18 years in Denmark has flown by.

She's been in Denmark for longer! She moved there 20 years ago and has been Crown Princess for 18 years in May. But you are definitely right - the time has flown!

I did. It was a bit superficial, I think. Also only had a running time of about 30-35 minutes, so you can't cover a lot over such a short span of time. Covered the engagement, the wedding, the births of the children and Mary's main areas of interest – namely women's rights and her work with the Mary Foundation.

Off the top of my head, they interviewed several of their own journalists, a journalist and a photographer from Billed Bladet, a journalist from BT, a historian, the Secretary General for Save the Children Denmark, the chairperson from Copenhagen Pride and a former Minister of Development Cooperation.

I'd say if you've followed Mary's life (in Denmark) just somewhat, you don't learn anything or see any footage in TV2's programme that you didn't already know or haven't see already. I'm actually thinking DR's programme (which will air Saturday and hopefully be available outside of Denmark) will cover a lot of the same events – only that's an hour long IIRC and is presented in conversation with Mary herself.

Frederiksborg Castle is on my list of must see places along with Rosenborg castle. The artist has captured the essence of the Crown Princess. 18 years in Denmark has flown by.

I cannot recommend a visit to Frederiksborg enough. It's marvellous and in addition to the castle being very impressive in and of itself, they always come up with really well-curated exhibitions. I usually go several times a year and it's always worth the ticket ?

Watching the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. When Denmark marches, the Australian TV commentator had to mention Mary & Frederik's story, and wished Mary a happy 50th birthday:flowers:

The portrait of her is really lovely. Classy, elegant, regal- but in a more modern way.

Usually, portraits are horrendous and don't do justice to the person. But this portrait is so well done, beautiful yet simple. I love the light tones and the calm vibe :flowers:

Is Frederiksborg far from Copenhagen? It looks stunning from pictures. Never been to Denmark, but maybe one day I will.;)

Mary's sister Jane wrote a lovely tribute in Tasmania magazine The Mercury

“M has embraced her role as Crown Princess with dignity and grace, earning the admiration & respect of people all over the world. Our mother would have been bursting with love & pride”

In connection with the 50th birthday of HRH The Crown Princess on 5 February 2022, the Greenlandic telecom and postal service provider Tusass issues a new postage stamp.

At the request of Her Royal Highness, a donation from the sale of the stamp is given to the Dandelion Center in Nuuk. The Dandelion Center is an independent institution that has existed since 2006, and it is both an activity center for children and young people as well as a shelter and 24-hour ward for emergency placement of socially disadvantaged children from the ages of 3 to 11 years.

Frederiksborg Castle is located in Hillerød, a satellite town of Copenhagen.
There are plenty of connections from the city to Hillerød.

And it is indeed worth a visit!

Wonderful family photos, I love the coordinated outfits of the children. Mary is a little too photoshopped. I can’t wait for the day for Frederick to shave that awful grey beard

Mary looks lovely and natural. And Frederik looks wonderful with the salt and pepper beard! The kids as has been said before looks great and so grown up. Absolutely beautiful family photos.

DR1 has posted a clip from their interview with Mary. I think she's talking about the first time she met QMII.

The zillions of articles, comments and features about Mary continues. Here are a couple of examples of photos:

Meeting QMII and PH is just one step on the way, not that she wasn't nervous when it happened! - Did they like her? Could they tell she was alright?

One day Frederik told her: Mother is popping over for tea.
And Mary was flabbergasted. What's she supposed to do? Say? Dress?
Hmm, yeah, you should probably curtsy.
Ehh, how?
So Frederik showed her.

- As Mary said in the Frederik portrait book where she also describes the first meeting, to Frederik it was no big deal. QMII is just mother.
QMII has also described the first meeting and it reads between the lines that she was nervous too.
No doubt because it was serious! It was a woman Frederik loved and was likely to marry, and if Mary had failed, it would probably have been QMII who would have to tell him that marriage is a no go. And what mother want's to break her son's heart? QMII who by all account is a nice and decent person, would also be eager not to leave a bad impression on Mary. That would be a bad start.
But fortunately the first meeting went well. Mary left a good first impression. And QMII didn't scare away the poor girl.

There has as far as I know never been an account of the first meeting between PH and Mary, but considering how both Alexandra, Mary and our Marie all were very fond of PH, there is little doubt in my mind that PH was a very caring and loving father-in-law.

Mary is getting publicly celebrated to an extent that is as close to how she would normally have been celebrated.
And the massive coverage of her is genuine and heartfelt. There is a real public interest in her.

That must be heart-warming for not only Mary, but certainly also Frederik, who has never been jealous of his wife, on the contrary. And also for QMII.
The dynasty and monarchy may face problems in the future, but it's unlikely Mary will be the cause of these problems. That must be a great relief.

Even those who are against the monarchy acknowledge what Mary has accomplished, both by becoming a member of the DRF, but also what she is doing and how she represent Denmark.
There will always be those who for various reasons dislike Mary, but trying to be as objective as possible, they are at present a very small minority.

You can fool all 5.8 million Danes some times. You can fool some of the 5.8 million all the time, but you can't fool all 5.8 million all the time.

Mary has been in DK for twenty years now. We are a small country, a tribe. We know each other more intimately than what is possible in larger countries. If Mary wasn't her real self, she would long since have been exposed.

ADDED: Yes, that's an interview in Jyllands Posten, the largest newspaper in DK, which focus very much on what goes on outside Copenhagen. It's a very serious paper, with emphasis on business and commerce, and it is not in the habit of covering the DRF that much, except in connection with export and business promotion.

Frederik has look so proud he could burst. At times, even a bit emotional. This has been a week where Mary has been completely in the spotlight and has received well-deserved and well- earned acknowledgement and appreciation for all she's done and accomplished as Crown Princess. It has been wonderful to see.

Oh wow...at the end of the DR1 program Mary is surprised with a beautiful song by the Danish Girl Choir. Mary is move to tears. Here is the link to the video

Yes, it's a song comparing the recipient, in this case Mary to a rose.

And a Danish lesson for those who glanced at the subtitles.

In English there is you, your, yours.
In Danish the informal versions are: du, dig, din.
The formal versions are: De, Dem, Deres. - Always with a capital D, which is why I usually write You with a capital Y, when the version is formal.

Mary was addressed with the formal versions.

Oh that's beautiful about the meaning of the song.

Danish is like Spanish in that way, we also have a formal and informal You.
