It was announced today that Crown Princess Mary has become Patron
of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, "to support the agency’s
work to promote maternal health and safer motherhood in more than 150
developing nations" - a patronage that combines fields she's already
interested in and working for.

“It is a great honour that H.R.H. Crown Princess Mary has chosen to
become Patron of UNFPA,” said UNFPA’s Executive Director, Thoraya
Ahmed Obaid, who has previously met with the Crown Princess. “We
at UNFPA appreciate the Crown Princess’ personal engagement in and
knowledge of the situation women face in developing countries. Her
help to UNFPA and its partners would shine more light on women’s
urgent health needs and deaths in pregnancy and childbirth.”

The first event CP Mary will attend in her new role is "Women Deliver",
a global conference on maternal health in Washington, from June 7-
9, so it's part of Mary's and Frederik's official journey to Washington.

Isnt this her first role/patron for the UN?

Isnt this her first role/patron for the UN?

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark agreed to be Patroness of the World Health Organization, Regional Office for Europe in May 2005.

WHO is the authority responsible for public health within the United Nations system. The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) is one of WHO’s six regional offices around the world.

Congrats to Mary. :) It seems they selected her because she was already active in this field. It is achievement for Mary. She became a patron not just for being crown princess. :flowers:

Yes, that story has now hit every media worth mentioning here in DK.

Minister for Development, Christian Friis Bach comments: "It's grand and unique that the Crown Princess engages herself internationally in the struggle for women's rights and women's rights to decide themselves how many children they will have and to give birth to them under safe conditions.
The knowledge and commitment of the Crown Princess in the field is well known. I'm therefore convinced that the Crown Princess will contribute dicidingly to spread the knowledge (to the public) and secure backing to this agenda, which has a high priority in the Danish aide to the devolping world".

And here is an interesting article about the issues Mary will put focus on while in Mozambique. (The headline however is silly): Mary som seksualvejleder i Afrika - Royale | www.bt.dk

- 40 % of the girls get pregnant as teenagers.
- Half the girls get married before turning 18.
- There is a serious lack of condoms and other forms for prevention.
- Women have on average six children.
- One third of all girls have their sexual debut before turning 15. (15 is used here because that's the age of consent here in DK).
- 20 % of the girls get married before turning 15.

Mozambique however intends to address the issue. The main obstacles here are not religion or politics, but serious poverty. - People simply cannot afford prevention, even if they could obtain it.
As such cases of HIV/AIDS is alarmingly high. - Which again requires medicin, which people cannot afford, even if they could obtain it.....

--------------

Which again means that the life expectancy is low and parents might die or be unable to work before the children grow up.
Which again means that girls have to find some sort of way to support themselves. Either by getting married very young (and without any possibillity of more than a very basic education) or prostitution. - And prostitutes are almost dead certain to contract HIV.

But in other parts of Africa (and elsewhere) prevention, abortion and information about family planning is actively discouraged by religious and political organisations.
But also from some aide organisations. Those schools or clinics that inform on family planning or prevention risk loosing support. - All because someone far away in rich countries, where they have full access to medicalcare that is lightyears away from Mozambique, insist on following their political/religious agenda. - Because "what applies in my country, must also apply in a third world country, among people who live on the verge of starvation".

Thanks for the pics :flowers:

Here is a gallery from TV2: TV 2 Gallery
I presume the scarf or whatever it's called is honorary? A kind of local garment?
Perhaps someone in the know can shed more light on that? :)

I see Mary has been allocated a local female protection officer. PET is there as well.

Also what common language do they speak in Mozambique? Portuguese? - Checked. Yes, they do.
