Domestic abuse of women, children and dogs (no joke!) is a serious issue in Greenland.

I have a lot of respect for her commitment to these issues. Her Foundation has done excellent work and brought attention to some hidden issues.

Today, Crown Princess Mary travels on a three-day working visit to Greenland, where she and Mary Foundation will focuses on domestic violence and in this context held the conference "Domestic violence - a shared responsibility".
The Danish Royal family's Facebook has just posted this video with Crown Princess Mary sitting in the car on her way to Copenhagen Airport while she is telling about the purpose of the visit:
(She speaks all in Danish, though)

The DRF's Facebook about Mary opening the Mary Foundation's conference today:
Crown Princess Mary: "We know that violence exists. We know that violence is illegal. And we know that violence is wrong. Nevertheless, the violence exists. Why? There is no simple answer, but part of the answer lies in the silence. If we do not talk about violence, it can continue uninterrupted."
In Greenland's capital Nuuk HRH the Crown Princess today, as chairman of the Mary Foundation, opened the conference "Domestic violence - a shared responsibility" with an opening speech.

Ready for today's video and smile? Isn't she lovely?
Much to the delight of the many Greenlanders Mary yesterday began her opening speech with speeching Greenlandish (perhaps the most difficult language in the world.)
Crown Princess Mary:
"I know that Greenlanders are very liberating and respectful people, so I also have to say here: it's okay to laugh! And I will laugh with you! And now you will find out why..."
And then Mary began her speech by talking in Greenlandic.

As you can read in the many comments it's one of the many reasons that the Danes really like Mary and Frederik. I conclude Frederik because he has exactly the same property.
Translation of the two most liked comments:
1.
She come across as the most lovely and warm person. With an humble Scots mind (after her father). And incredibly charming! I love Mary (and Frederik) aren't afraid to laugh and making fun of themselves! That's exactly why we respect and love them so. They not only make a fantastic work - but they also have the 'human and the personality' with them. And this is important! Totally proud.
2.
Pilutaq Lennert: I met her privately for about 10 minutes and I have to say that she is a wonderful, warm, sympathetic, friendly, down to earth and welcoming person ☝
We are fortunate to have her as Crown Princess

To the non-Danish speaking members...
When Mary had finished her Greenlandic part she laughingly asks the audience: Did anyone understand it? The audience clap and laugh and Mary says: I can hear some 'no's' and crack up laughing. And then she says in Danish: Well, I am very happy to be here.
From what I can read at the many comments Mary talked a good Greenlandic though and one could easily understand what she said. So well done.

Wow, first Danish and now Greenlandish. Well done!
I listened to a fragment of Mary speaking Danish. I couldn't understand a word of it. And Dutch does have similarities to Scandinavian languages.

Two DR News articles (there has also been good features in the DR evening tv-news).
DR: Mary helps abused women in Greenland:
Mary hjælper voldsramte kvinder i Grønland | Nyheder | DR
Greenlandish women: The royal visit sends a important message
Grønlandske kvinder: Royalt besøg sender vigtigt signal | Nyheder | DR
It sends a strong message that Crown Princess Mary the last three days have been visiting the North Atlantic in order to focus on violence against women in Greenland.
Although more than 64% of the women in Greenland has been abused, it's not something we talk about, and often it's the family's biggest secret.
Therefore, Crown Princess Mary, as chairman of the Mary Foundation, which works intensely to combat domestic violence, has traveled the 3,000 km up to the northern part of the Danish Kingdom.
- We must break the silence, says Crown Princess Mary.
The leader of the crisis center in Nuuk, Stina Birthilsin Svard, tells there's no doubt that Crown Princess Mary's visit are an important part in the fight against violence in Greenland, because it causes people to open their eyes for the problem.
- Had Mary not been here, we had not been so united in the fight against violence. Everyone knows her. This means that we will be heard, seen and taken seriously. She uses her status to help.
- The women will come and ask for help because they know that we are working with it right now, she says.
And the Greenlandic women, Arnajaraq Berthelsen and Dorte Møller Platuu from Nuuk, agree.
- I really hope that it's going to open people's eyes about how bad it is, says Arnajaraq Berthelsen.
She is pleased that Crown Princess Mary spends time helping battered women and she praises the Crown Princess's work, which among other things is through the Mary Foundation's conference 'Domestic violence - a shared responsibility'.
Crown Princess Mary is a role model for them and many other Greenlandic women as she is not born Dane and she is coming from another country, says Arnajaraq Berthelsen.
- She is like a sister to us.
- And that fact is essential for people dare to talk about the problem of violence, says Arnajaraq Berthelsen and Dorte Møller Platuu.
