I just meant the everyday person doesn’t walk around in these costumes. So I was wondering what what people thought of it. If it was meant as a sign of respect or do people think it looks silly or outdated.
In one picture, there’s a women wearing skinny jeans taking a photo of Mary in traditional costume.
Just as the national costumes in Greenland the Faeroese seem
very proud of their heritage, and as such also the traditional costumes, which they seem to wear at every possible occasion in both countries.
The DRF have traditionally worn these costumes partly as a sign of respect and partly because they are presented with pride to be worn at festive occasions.
Also, the costumes presented to the DRF are supposed to be worn and that is considered a natural thing to do, after all Greenland and the Faeroe Islands are a part of the realm.
They may of course be some who see it as silly or old fashioned, but I doubt they express that opinion too loudly!
And of course a number of Greenlanders and Faeroese simply can't afford such a costume, even though some (certainly the silver items) are handed down.
Are you perhaps also thinking about "cultural appropriation"? (Which in my opinion is a monumentally silly concept! Almost all fashion and clothing through the ages have been "cultural appropriation".)
It won't be seen as such, after all the Faeroese suits are pretty much identical to the traditional suits worn all over Scandinavia, albeit basically only by folk-dancer in DK though.
The exception is of course Greenland, who have their own outfits But considering the very close affiliation between Greenland and the DRF, I think they would be deeply offended if the DRF did
not wear their outfits.
