:previous:thanks for those Insights Muhler on Frederik and Greenland.

Look how emotional and Happy Frederik is giving his speech, no idea what he said but he looks so thrilled for this trip to have taken place.

Hello, I am a new member, a fan of Frederik and Mary and family, and I just discovered them last year! I have four children, similar ages to the royal couple's children. The pictures and videos of this Greenland trip have been wonderful. Thank you all for all the picture and video links and translations. One question I have been wanting to ask: why, as in the video of M& F' s arrival at the dinner/ speech yesterday, and other events in recent months, does Prince Frederik seem so reluctant to hold Princess Mary' s hand? Is he just shy or is it not proper protocol? (Maybe this isn't the right thread to ask on?)

Hi cavintagejen and very welcome to the TRF. He is no more shy than he did this to his wife in public yesterday :p  https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd....325_278428965677860_8935660388107171357_n.jpg

Clip in our early evening news here at 6pm. Frederik, Mary and all four children were received at the dock with applause. Over 1000 people has turned up and Frederik described the welcome as 'overwhelming.' F&M and children all in national costumes. In contrast to the other days of sunny weather, this morning is gray... Maybe it lightens up during the day.

Most likely more to come in the main news at 6.30 pm and 7pm where the clip probably will be put online.

BB caught F&M in casual style and with the arms around each other waving to people on the dock. Nice pic.

Welcome to the board. :flowers:
I think overall Mary and Frederik are more shy into showing PDA compared to other couples, but we have seen them a lot on this trip holding hands and with wonderful smiles between them. and yes even a little kiss from Frederik. Take a look over at the "Warm moments between royals" thread for lots of examples.

More pictures from today.

Thanks, Roskilde and Polyesco...I don't know why it matters to me, but I like them from all I see of them, and it makes me happy to see them happy as a couple, like my husband and I. :)
That is a cute pic of them on the boat with arms around each other!

What was the purpose of the Danish Royal Air Force flying over? Is it a welcoming or coincidence?

What was the purpose of the Danish Royal Air Force flying over? Is it a welcoming or coincidence?

More a question of showing the flag and provide some positive pr and a photo opportunity.
After all, the fighters are there for the Greenlanders.

Thanks for the additional pics and clips. Right now as this is written M&F are attending their final kaffemik in Nuuk.
There were some 150 guests present at the gala dinner in Nuuk yesterday evening. As the number of inhabitants in the Greenlandic capital is 16.000, that means that almost 1 % of the citizens were present at the dinner.
To put it into perspective, that is equivalent to some 15.000 Copenhageners attending a royal gala dinner back in DK.

In the speech kindly posted by the tirelss Roskilde, we learn that Frederik went hunting during the day or two they had on their own and that he shot his very first reindeer during that hunt.

From this article we can read this: Kronprins Frederik har nedlagt sit første rensdyr | KNR.gl

(...)
Now the Crown Prince only need to complete one of the permanent Greenland traditions, namely paggaa, which his wife lovingly reminds him during the press conference.

- We heard retrospect that it (paggaa) is very tradition-bound when one layeth down his first animal. And you (Frederik) also need do that at some point: Throwing money and candy, said Crown Princess Mary. (...)

Some countries have the weirdest traditions: Wasn't it also Mary who during her first visit to Greenland back in 2004 had to have thrown paint over her or something like that?

Another thing - So apparently Frederik & Mary has hold a press conference today. Great.

HQ gallery from BT where we can see the weather today in Nuuk is cold and gray. Sermitsiaq tells that Minik and Ivalo started to freeze and therefore stayed on Dannebrog after the welcome cermony, while Christian and Bella better can keep warm and with M&F greeted the large crowd. Maybe the twins will participate again later in the day.

You are probably referring to crossing the Arctic Circle. That requires a baptism by King Neptune. Mary and practically all the conscript crew members went through that ordeal.

I see from the article that Christian went with him on the hunt and that Frederik, according to tradition, had to break (cut up) and skin the animal himself.

- Reindeers breed in Greenland as if they were paid to do so.
It's another matter with moscus oxen, not to mention polar bears who are getting fewer. Not because of hunting but because they drown or starve. Polar bears are fantastic swimmers but the ice is retreating, so the bears have to swim ever longer distances to find new hunting grounds and many, especially among the young, don't have the stamina.

Thanks for all these wonderful photos. Little Josephine´s expressions are too cute for words. I am impressed how well behaved and conscious of their duties these children are. At the same time they are normal kids of their ages and will act as such when they are tired or bored. Very good job Frederick and Mary did on them.

Just curious, but is the lilltle handbag which Josephine is carrying part of the traditional costume.,?

Before I forget to ask yet again...The Tartan portion of Mary's Greenlandic Dress, is it the Donaldson Tartan or just something to represent Mary's Scottish Heritage?

Sigh...Those pictures...:)

:wub:Wow! Be still my heart! CP Frederik in his navy uniform! Love a man in uniform!
Thanks for all the photos, videos and links! This was a fantastic trip!

My observances:
Princess Isabella is a total daddy's girl. Prince Christian is mummy's boy! Christian and Josephine appear to share a close and special bond - maybe it is the oldest-youngest sibling relationship?

And plenty of funny faces, too, including (at least one) one from Christian, and lots from Josephine. Although Christian usually looks like a junior king already.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary | MYROYALS &HOLLYWOOD FASHİON

The text in one of the Greenlandic papers suggested that while Bella and Christian soldierd on, the twins were understandably by now less enthusiastic about shaking hands with people and being in focus.
They are after all only three years old and a week is a very long time at that age. So it is no wonder if the novelty effect is starting to wear off and they begin to think it's not that fun anymore.

But they have shown that they can deal with a crowd and that they can be well behaved and polite and that they are not frightned by many people. (I guess the hamlets in Greenland is a manageble size for small children).
That will build up confidence for their next public apperance.

Much more from their day in Nuuk:

It cleared up later in the day and the temperature reached plus degrees and Minik and Ivalo participated in the rest of the day's events :) The newspapers noted that the twins were good at giving hands as they along with mom and dad visited "The Minik and Ivalo Fund." Even if sometimes it was with the wrong hand

Gallery from their last part of their day - we see Frederik play the old Greenlandic game. Our Ironman had to surrender - the younger alet won. To his great delight. It's not every day you win over a king (as he is quoted saying)

Frederik described the welcome as overwhelming with so many people. Also a change for the children. In the small villages showed up the entire village, but but but - it means about 60-100 people. Nuuk has probably been a bit overwhelming for four children as well.

BB video, picture and article from Nuuk.
VIDEO: Isabella og Christian fik flot modtagelse i Nuuk | Billed Bladet

Frederik and Mary are interviewed troughout the end. They tell they spent their two days off with hiking and exploring the nature. They also fished a lot and Mary says they caught a lot of cods.

Again, they tell how happy and overwhelming they are about the welcome they have received everywhere. Also the children have been playing a lot with peers children on the trip and have got experiences for life.

At the end, Mary tells a charming thing. BB's reporter says he thinks it has been touching to see how all in Greenland call the twins for Minik and Ivalo. F&M agree and Mary tells how the twins have presented themselves as "Hi my name is Ivalo" and "Hi, I'm Minik" when they greeted people

ADDED:
Greenlandic media reports that the mayor Asii Chemnitz Narup today at 9:45am will say goodbye to the Crown Prince family in Nuuk Airport.
So now, this fantastic trip is over. What a privilege it has been to get so very close to the family every day. Definitely my favorite royal tour!

Thanks, Roskilde.

The fashionistas among you will no doubt notice Josephine's hair ornament in this picture.

Frederik tried this Innuit game, Pull Stick. - Alas, he lost:
http://sermitsiaq.ag/sites/default/...lic/media/kronprinsp_web_26.jpg?itok=Foef_5eX

We also learn that during their day off they went into a fjord to do some fishing.

Our Australian friends on this forum will no doubt appreciate the Australian flags being waved by the crowd. Mary's first home is not forgotten: http://sermitsiaq.ag/se-video-nuummiut-ventede-mary-frede

For those among you who are very particular about the details of clothes, also regional Greenlandic suits, here are the specifics: http://sermitsiaq.ag/staar-bag-royale-boerns-flotte-nationaldragter

Christian: His west Greenlandic suit was made in the capital Nuuk, in the sewing room Kittat. Five seamstresses did the work under Jonna Kleist.

Isabella: Her east Greenlandic suit was made in the studio Skæven in Tasiilaq under Talia Ignatiussen.
And in Kalaallisuuliornermik Ilinniarfik in Sisimiut under Kirstine Berthelsen.

Minik aka Vincent: A Thule suit (northern Greenland) by two seamstresses Birthe Jensen and Tukummeq Peary in the small town of Quaanaq.

Ivalo aka Josephine: Also a Thule suit and also made by the two seamstresses above and also in Quaanaq.

Each of the four Greenlandic municipalities paid for a suit.

- In case you wonder: Greenlanders use "Danish" names. It stems back from the 1700's and onwards when Greenland was Christened. So Danish Christian names were adopted, later combined with Danish surnames.
Nowadays Greenland is more Christian than DK and the Greenlanders more faithful churchgoers than danes.

A little more trivia:
Flag of Greenland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name of the Greenlandic flag is Erfalasorput

It's the only Nordic flag without a cross. The Nordic flags are also known as cross-banners.
AFAIK Dannebrog and Erfalasorput are the only Nordic national flags with an official name.
Here are (some) of the others:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/Nordic-cross_Flags.png

As you can tell some of the cross banners are official flags of regions or islands.
Also the Shetland and Orkney Islands use cross banners, they were after all a part of the Nordic countries centuries ago.

- Did I remember to tell you that we are pretty obsessed with flags in this part of the world? :p

Large great pictures from Hola! Including some lovely close-up's of Bella in her national costume.
Calor familiar en el polo: El álbum de Federico y Mary de Dinamarca con sus hijos en Groenlandia

Now, Frederik, Mary and children may have arrived back home in Denmark. It only takes 4 hours in plane between Greenland-Denmark. But I thougt about something. We heard from the journalists that they flew together with the Crown Prince family to Greenland. They could even tell us that Frederik and Mary sat with the children at the first row in the plane.

But isn't there something about that Christian and Frederik rarely fly together? Maybe they make some exceptions sometimes. It would also be a circus to send two planes, one just after the other, to and from Greenland.

Last edited:
:previous: I think they might have made the same kind of exception the BRF made when William was allowed to fly with George. But I still think it's risky and I actually thought Mary and Frederik were careful about doing it (at least when they flew to Australia, Isabella and Vincent flew with Frederik and Christian and Josephine flew with Mary), but then earlier this year IIRC, they flew home from a vacation all together, so I don't know if they've stopped parting Frederik and Christian?

I don't know if it has been mentioned already, but I just saw on the telly that in addition to tomorrow's TV2 documentary on the trip, DR will also send a reportage on Monday.

I'm impressed by how well the children handled the trip. Mary and Frederik must be very proud!
Thanks to everyone who provided pictures, translations, summaries, etc. This was such a fun royal tour to follow.

First of all a big thank you to all for the links and information. Especially our Danish members for the extra info and insights, for translating videos and articles.

This trip has been wonderful from start to finish. You could tell from the start and during his speech that this was a trip Frederik and Mary were eager to do.
introduce their kids to Greenland, a great part of the kingdom of Denmark. Frederik and Mary looked emotional and so happy to see how their kids took a great liking to Greenland.

The kids did so well. I knew Christian and Isabella would do well, since they have been at other events; but Josephine was a revelation. Before we always saw her attached to Mary but now she went with Frederik, with her siblings and even on her on. Vincent was the more timid of the siblings but even at 3 years old he did well, shaking people's hands.
we saw how Christian is protective and attentive to his younger siblings, Josephine in particular, after so many years of seeing him with Isabella.

This trip must have meant alot to the people of Greenland, and truly one of the many highlights was seeing the family in their traditional outfits (and from all parts of Greenland).
too many lovely photos to mention, but i know I will be going back and seeing them again.

And of course, the cherry on top of this cake; Frederik in Uniform lol.
But really, smiles and closeness to the people was beautiful
