Crown Prince Frederik's Working Visit to China: September 23-26, 2017

"Denmark is in focus as a knowledge nation when His Royal Highness The Crown Prince visits the Chinese capital Beijing and the southern Chinese city Guangzhou in September.

When Denmark entered into a partnership agreement with China in 2008 on research, innovation and education, it was the largest Danish undertaking in education and research outside of the country’s borders. And when Denmark, as the first EU country to do so, entered into cooperation with China earlier this year on a joint tourism year during 2017, The Crown Prince said “yes” to serving as patron.

Thus, knowledge and tourism will be in focus when The Crown Prince visits China 23-26 September. The Crown Prince will, among other things, open The Danish Industry Foundation House, which will be the home of the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research in Huaiou, which is north of the capital Beijing. Three years ago, HM The Queen broke the first ground for the building, which The Crown Prince will now officially open. The new building will provide a setting for the collaboration which has taken place between the eight Danish universities and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2008.

The Crown Prince will also start up a new green urban renewal project in Qinlong Hutongen in central Beijing. Next year, the City of Copenhagen and Danish companies will collaborate and be co-hosts at Beijing Design Week. Here, Danish competencies will help show how the Chinese can elevate their quality of life through projects that focus on urbanization, renovation and sustainable solutions.

Later in the visit, The Crown Prince, in his role as patron of the joint tourism year between Denmark and China, will open the event Denmark Days, which will make the Chinese more aware of Denmark as a destination for their travels.

During the four-day visit, The Crown Prince will also open an exhibition in the Danish Culture Centre, take part in a seminar on innovation, creativity and learning, and also visit Tsinghua and the LEGO Foundation’s Lifelong Learning Lab.

The Crown Prince will be accompanied by higher education and science minister Søren Pind during the visit."

Crown Prince in Chinese reality show

The Crown Prince's current China visit will be weeks after a performance in the Chinese television program 'Sisters Over Flowers', also known as 'Flowers On Trip'.

Here, Crown Prince Frederik took the five host hostages when he, with Christiania bike, oysters and ordinary casual characters, surprised them at Langelinie in Copenhagen.

On the other hand, the Crown Prince received a Chinese silk tie and admiring glance from both passers-by and Chinese hosts, who subsequently moved on to H.C. Andersen's birthplace, Odense.

Now the Crown Prince has traveled the opposite way and is in the Chinese capital, Beijing."

Thank you, Polyesco, Eya & Iceflower.

Of course Frederik isn't going to China because of their pretty brown eyes, it's as with almost all royal visits abroad about money.
China has the worlds largest middle class. And the Chinese middle class, in contrast to say the Danish middle class (about 80 % or so of the population) buy expensive.
Danes (Scandinavians/Westerners) like to save money when possible and show off how we have saved money. In China it's the opposite, you buy expensive when possible to show your status. That means Danish businesses that specialize in offering pretty good quality merchandise at affordable prices have had problems in China, while being a success elsewhere. So China is an attractive market.
Denmark is in the fortunate situation that it's a small country with no particular prehistory with China, apart from trade and diplomatic relations. And combined with H C Andersen being mandatory in Chinese schools for decades (his stories could be interpreted in whatever Marxist way that happened to be in at any given time. Also today where China has become a capitalist one-party system.) the Chinese have a pretty positive image of Denmark.
That includes the DRF, which is old enough to give it considerable gravitas, while being folksy enough to be palatable as the image of socialist community ideal that is still the political fashion in China.

In the clips I'm going to post links to (I hope you can see them, they are mainly in English, even though I can't quite make out the Chinese captions popping up everywhere. My Mandarin is, ahem, a bit rusty...) below, Frederik is very much in the center.

The visit to China has been well covered here in DK. So far only Beijing. A number of the students at one of the universities there is studying Danish. (Perhaps they want to study in DK later or seek an international career. DK is screaming for highly qualified people! We simply haven't got IT-people or engineers enough.)
Surprisingly perhaps the visit is also well covered in China, or at least Beijing local TV, and Frederik very much appeals to young people, as indeed he does back home in DK. He's royal, but laid back and approachable - and as one student noted, he's good looking.

One of the exports to China is ready made kindergartens, schools, and now also retirement homes, build and run according to Danish teaching and pedagogue principles which are very different from Chinese principles. Both in regards to teaching, schedule, functionality and decor. - And also a plan for anti-bullying, based on Mary's initiative. (Sorry Aussies, we nicked that idea from you and ran away with it. )
The ironic thing is that we in DK are currently looking at the Asian schooling systems to see if we can use their principles.

In the clips below we see Frederik meeting five hosts from a very popular Chinese reality show for young people (they look pretty Japanese inspired to me), who went to DK prior to this visit. And the red carpet was rolled out for them, including Frederik served as a little dish for them. The programme was worth gold! And in the Ministry for Commerce and the Foreign Ministry they still can't get their arms down.

Here we go, I hope you can watch this: Kronprins Frederik tog kinesiske tv-værter med storm - TV 2

Here is the full video about DK, which was made by the Chinese group some three weeks ago. Frederik is featured from 9:30: https://www.bt.dk/danmark/sjov-video...sk-realityshow

Looks like a funny video, but somewhat difficult to enjoy in full for those of us who are Chinese-challenged.

Thanks Iceflower & Polyesco.

Yes, today's main event was the opening of what is basically a joint Danish-Chinese university/technical institute. - Very much supported by Danish Industry and supplied with products from Danish companies.
The purpose here being that Danish students can go to China, study with Chinese students in an environment that is both international and at the same time homely. - That appeals to students from both countries.
The research performed here is very much based on developing Danish products and tailor-make them for the Chinese market.
Say a pump. A pump is developed in a company in DK. The company send prototypes to this university in China, where further development and research by both Danish and Chinese students take place. That means the Danish company get instant feedback on what is needed specifically for the Chinese market. The finishing, presentation and not least instruction that comes with the Danish product is fine-polished based on what the Chinese students think - they are after all often the ones who have to work with the product locally afterwards.
The Chinese students get the opportunity to work closely with Western students using and an approach and having a mindset that is often completely different from that in China - without actually having to leave China.
Keep in mind that Chinese students studying abroad, just like every other international student, often feel like they have been dumped in a completely alien environment! Here they don't have to use time and energy on adapting to a new country, new culture and new language - apart from English (and perhaps some Danish as well).

It's actually a very interesting co-operation and Danish Industry (*) have high expectations.

(*) Danish Industry is the very influential umbrella organization representing the interests of basically every major Danish company worth mentioning. The DRF work closely with Danish Industry.

During the visit, The Crown Prince will lay flowers at three named Danish gravesites and get a guided tour focusing on Danish-Chinese maritime history. Changzhou Island was once known as ‘Danes Island’ and functioned as a base for Danes in connection with the trade in China.
