That's basically a follow up on QMII's last visit to Rome not that long ago.

So is it essentially a business/ trade mission ? I wish they would extend the scope of the visit.

Thanks, Iceflower.

A fairly routine, so to speak, commerce visit.
DK has a considerable export of energy saving products to Italy, both for the ordinary household as well as the industry and major buildings for the public.

The visit to the children's hospital couldn't be more "traditional". That's almost mandatory for princesses and should provide some nice photos with Mary.

That's interesting.

I'm not familiar with the protocol regarding audiences with the Pope.
Is a mantilla mandatory? Also for Protestants? Or does it not have any religious meaning?

Well, neither Diana nor Madeleine & Silvia nor Haya are Catholics.
So, it seems to be a traditional thing to wear, regardless of your religion.

It's protocol. Even QEII has worn the mantilla being received by the Vatican

I believe that non Catholics wear black, including a mantilla as head covering. Catholics can wear white.

I am not so sure how strict the rule is. Angela Merkel (daughter of a Lutheran pastor) seemed to wear one visiting John Paul II while being only party chairman and didn't while seeing Franciscus when she was chancellor. (Pictures of both events e.g. in this article https://www.welt.de/politik/deutschland/article136799981/Nur-auf-die-Pizza-muss-Merkel-beim-Papst-verzichten.html )

Princess Charlene of Monaco wore black when meeting the Pope in 2013 and white in 2016.

The rule is/was that the Queen of Spain, the Queen of the Belgians and the Grand Duchess of Luxmbourg and Princesses of Savoy had the "Privilege de Blanc" so they can wear white. This seems now also have been granted to the Princess of Monaco.

The Queen wore colours at her last meeting with the Pope. At previous meetings with previous Popes, ( she’s met five of them!) she wore black, a mantilla with a tiara, and a hat with a veil. Pope Francis is to be thanked for his more liberal views. Queen Letizia wore a smart white suit, no mantilla.

I know it's a bit nerdy, but I do find details of protocol absolutely fascinating!
Especially the history behind why something is done, so please keep your input coming.
