Nice gallery! Mary is in good training in reading aloud anti-bullying books to children in connection with her own anti-bullying program in Denmarks schools and kindergartens.

Canada is a very large country so that the weather varies from region to region. The Crown Prince couple can expect cool autumn weather around 15-18 degrees with some rain in Toronto.:flowers::flowers:

Sigh...Four of my favourite people. :D. If you can, find our Governor General doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video. He did it to both answer the Challenge and to show the Grandkids how cool their Grandpa Book really is. :)

At our National War Memorial, where Frederick and Mary are placing their wreath, that granite rectangle looking piece it's in front of is Canada's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The National War Memorial is directly behind it.

I've visited the site in 2006 and...It's in the middle of one the busiest intersections of Ottawa. I mean, look right and you see the Chateau Laurier, look left and there's our Parliament Buildings, then behind and to the right is The National Centre for the Performing Arts. It should be noisy and chaotic, but the instant you go up the stairs on to the Memorial proper...It is eerie. Everything becomes hushed and *very* quiet. It's like it's surrounded by a cone of silence. It was was truly eerie, but not in a scary way. Very like when entering a church.

It was also one of the most moving experiences I've ever had. I hope Fredrick and Mary were able to sense that too earlier today.

Where are they staying

Frelinghighness, I believe they are staying at the Chateau Laurier, but I am not 100% sure. It is one of our most beautiful hotels and certainly has a history of hosting royalty, presidents, etc. I think the trade delegation that is accompanying the couple is staying there, and Mary had a meeting there this afternoon relating to sun cancer, so that's why I am guessing they are staying there.

I skipped out of work at morning break and trekked a few blocks to see Fred and Mary lay a wreath at the National War Memorial.

It was fun as I was surrounded by Australians here on a bus tour, who were delighted to see that "their" Mary was also in town.

The royal couple are such wonderful representatives of Denmark. They were elegant, respectful (it was a memorial service, after all), but they also managed to display a lot of friendliness and warmth to those of us who were there to see them.

Here are a few photos I took at the memorial earlier today.

And I like that the Australians are proud of 'their' Mary no matter where in the world she is.

Video summarize most of their Day 1 in Ottowa, including Mary reading aloud for the children at the local school. An anti-bullying book, so there Mary is totally on home ground. Frederik looking proudly on. Article mentions Frederik and Mary had landed the day before and probably suffered of a bit of jet lag, but despite of it they both were in brilliant mood.

A couple of questions for our Canadian friends:

How is the coverage in the local media?

And in this photo: http://royalista.com/wp-content/ima...-education_official-visits_1200x1200@1.5x.jpg
The somewhat heavily geared police officer in the background, is she a mountie or local? (Yes, I know. I'm a sucker for trivia).

I've been keeping my eye out and nothing in the media so far aside from a couple of articles you've seen posted in this thread. But then Edward and Sophie have been here for days and I've seen no mention of it on the evening news which is rather odd because the British royals do get at a mention or two. I think it might be because the media's chasing other headlines like the Scottish referendum as well as the Toronto mayor's illness.

I think the officer in the picture is probably just a local police officer or security guard. Mounties are quite distinct looking.

That corresponds to a couple of comments I read in the Daily Mail article.

I am of course familiar with the red gala uniform of the Mounties, but not their service uniform, hence my question.

Thanks. :flowers:

I don't recognice any of the protection officers, so I believe they must be Canadian.
I presume Canadian legislation does not allow foreign armed police officers top operate in Canada?

The Service Uniform is pretty distinctive too. What you would think for the hat, like other Police/Military units, but the shirt is a light caramel/almost beige-y, with dark brown epaulettes and the RCMP Crest Badge on the sleeves near the shoulder. The pants are that same dark brown w/a gold stripe down the outside seam.

Hope that helps. :)

Edited to add ~ If you bop over to the Wessexes in Canada thread, there's been a video of their departure from one of the stops (It's been a long day today, my brain is a tad frazzled at the moment, so forgive me blanking on where they were. At least it was an enjoyable long day for a change, but still long. Anyway...) earlier this week and at one point a Mountie in the regular Service Uniform walks through the frame. He's also got on the bulletproof vest and is w/the Dad w/his little girl on his shoulders.

Now * that* should help far more than my rather less than great try at describing it. :)

Thanks, now I'll know what to look for.

I presume it's the Mounties rather than regional police who provide security for foreign VIP's?

It's funny, protection officers look the same all over the world. Presumably they all have the same stylist and go to the same hairdresser/barber. :p

Imagine an international convention for protection officers at a hotel. - Full of identical looking anonymous people.:cool::cool::cool:

Most Canadian police are RCMP (otherwise known as Mounties).

On a federal level, the police force is the RCMP, so anything that is federal uses the RCMP.

Most provinces use the RCMP as their provincial police force, although Ontario and Quebec each have their own. Within the provinces that use the RCMP, anything on a provincial level uses the RCMP.

Within the provinces that use the RCMP, most municipalities use the RCMP as well. I'm not sure if any cities in Quebec or Ontario (with the possible exception of Ottawa) use the RCMP.

Thanks, Ish :flowers:

I was under the impression that the Mounties were a federal police force only.
Guess I need to rearrange my mental archive. :)

Hi Marfre!

Yes, Rideau Hall is the official residence of the Governor General. When our own Royal Family (i.e. Queen Elizabeth and her family) are visiting Ottawa they usually stay at Rideau Hall. It's a beautiful place and the Governor General takes the attitude that it belongs to all Canadians, so they will often have free concerts, movies, skating parties, etc. on the grounds. The grounds are usually always open for a stroll during the day and tours are available of much of the house, except for the very private areas where the GG and his wife actually live.

Thanks for the many pics, and articles. :flowers:

Muhler, as Humera said in a previous post, there is really little coverage of F&M's visit in the Canadian press. Generally speaking, even many visits by members of our own RF (the British RF) gets little press here. I find that really only Queen Elizabeth, Charles and Kate and William get a decent amount of coverage when they visit.

As for the police officers in your picture, they are members of the local Ottawa Police force. You can tell this by their logo: http://lake88.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Ottawa-Police-Logo-230x263.jpg Having said that, I'm at a loss to explain what they are doing there. I would have thought that looking after visiting royalty would largely be a federal matter. The RCMP website certainly seems to indicate this.

Also for answering my questions about Canadian police.

I wonder why there is such a limited press coverage of royal visits, especially secondary BRF visits.
It's not my impression that the Canadians are particularly repuplican.
Is it because the "media-elite/opinion-elite" think it's beneath them to cover such anacronistic and, even worse, popular institutions as royalty?

DailyMail is featuring Mary and Frederik a lot later. More than Sophie and Edward who are still in Canada!

I guess the Wessex couple are a lot further down the royal pyramid than Mary and Fred.

Also, I think in recent months, the DM is making a concerted effort to throw in more stories of European royals - though most of them are typically vacuous and have little of substance.

According to a Danish magazine, they stayed the first night at the Governor General's guest house.
