Christening of Prince Christian: January 21, 2006

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It seems the Greek royals will be busy. First Leonor's christening today and then Lilleprinsen's christening next week. A lot of travelling but I always enjoy seeing Anne-Marie. :)

Does anybody knows if Máxima&W-A will attend?

It is not in the public agenda on the website of the Dutch RF, but at least hey do not have any appointments this week or short after the Christening. So, it might be possible that they attend. I'm not sure though. I guess we'll just have to wait till the Danish RF provides a guest list.

The Royal Baptismal Font and the Royal Christening Set

(from kongehuset.dk)

The baptismal font was produced by the goldsmiths, Gödert Bodtstede and Christian Mundt II, in Hamburg about 1660. The font is made of silver and is partially gilt.

At the bottom of the font there is a relief of the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist. Above, it shows God the Father and the Dove of the Holy Spirit.

Together with the baptismal font there is a christening set. It includes a christening basin, a water pitcher and two candlesticks, all of pure gold. The set was probably made about 1650 by the goldsmith Hinrich Lambrecht II of Hamburg. The decoration is of a non-religious nature. The basin, for example, shows scenes from the four seasons. Originally, the basin, pitcher and candlesticks may have been part of a dressing set.

The baptismal font and the christening set have been used for the christening of all Danish Royal Children since 1671. The first time the baptismal font and the christening set were used was on the occasion of the baptism of Crown Prince Frederik, later to become Frederik IV. He was the first crown prince to be baptised after the introduction of Absolute Monarchy in 1660. The establishment of Absolutism marked the beginning of Hereditary Monarchy in Denmark. It was therefore important to underline that the children who were christened in the Royal Baptismal Font would be included in the order of succession to the Throne. As a consequence of this, the name and date of baptism of the child were engraved on the back of the basin. As many as 22 christening ceremonies are recorded in the period 1671-1749. Then there was no more room, and a gold plate was attached to the back of the basin on which seven christening ceremonies are recorded from 1750 to 1795. Apparently, the tradition was then discontinued.

Originally, the baptismal font was placed at Copenhagen Castle, but was moved to Rosenborg Castle in 1720. By contrast, the christening set has always been kept at Rosenborg Castle. There, together with the Crown of the Absolutist Kings and the other Crown Regalia, the christening set was kept in the Old Regalia Room, which served as the Treasury during the period of Absolutism.

Today, the baptismal font is to be found in the Knights’ Hall at Rosenborg Castle, to the right of the throne, whereas the christening set is on display in the underground Treasury. A font-shaped transport box made of wood and leather belongs to the font. It was probably produced at the same time as the font and was repaired in 1748.

Royal christening ceremonies are not linked to any particular church. Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix were, for example, baptised in Fredensborg Palace Chapel in 1999, and Møgeltønder Church in 2002, respectively.

The first-born child of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess will be baptised in Christiansborg Palace Chapel on 21 January 2006. This shows that there has always been a need to transport the font to various churches. However, wear and tear has taken its toll on the transport box, and it is not used any more. The transport box is kept at Rosenborg Castle, but is not on permanent display.

Discussion about what channels might be broadcast the Christening, has been moved to a separate thread, which can be found here.

The reason for this is to make it easier to find so that people won't have to ask the same question 5 times, and to keep this thread to actual news about the Christening and not about technical questions.

Døbes i tipoldefars dåbskjole

11. jan. 2006 14.45 Prinsedåb Opdat.: 17. jan. 2006 09.18

I'm pleasantly surprised to read that the Prince will probably be baptised in the 1870-gown. I thought for sure that it would be too small dor him.

Before the event starts, I’d just like to draw your attention to some basics.

First and foremost we would ask all of you to reread TRF’s posting rules and guidelines.. It is a big event taking place, and it would be silly being suspended in the middle of it, because you didn’t follow the rules, wouldn’t it?

On to the second part we realize that there will be a lot of images to be posted, but we hope that we can avoid seeing the same picture of the little prince, several times over, only cropped in different ways. Things like multiple postings of the same picture lead to the thread being long and makes it difficult to get a good overview (which in turn leads to repetitive questions being asked, when the answer is on the previous page, and the same pictures posted over and over...)

If an image is posted several times, the moderators will be deleting the excess images, at their discretion. Consider this the only warning you’ll get on this: things will be plenty hectic tomorrow.

We encourage everyone to use other means than TRF to host your pictures, if possible. This in turn will ensure that your pictures will not be deleted, as they will not be taking TRF’s server space, but remember to provide a copyright source for all your pictures. When duplicate pictures are posted as both attachments and hosted images, the hosted images will always be selected over the attachments regardless of which were posted first. Hotlinking from newspapers, magazines or other people’s image hosting accounts, is considered bandwidth stealing and is also forbidden.

This thread has been opened. Still, we suggest that you take advantage of the other threads that will be closed after the Christening, such as the Possible Baby Names-thread, or the Godparents of Frederik and Mary’s baby thread.

We hope that this event will be an orderly, informative and pleasurable event to follow. If there is anything you wonder about, don’t hesitate to PM a moderator.

Sincerely,

The Royal Forums’ moderating team

It's now 7.10 AM in Copenhagen. DR1 has started their breakfast show dedicated to the Christening.

Currently there are some concerns as to whether the red carpet will be rolled out for the guests to walk on, or if the guests will be escorted directly into the church (which will lead for disappointments for us...) because of the cold and the snow in Copenhagen. Per Thornit will make a decision about 9Am.

I hope the event goes smoothly, and I hope this thread goes smoothly too.

I suggest people read Norwegianne's post 38 before starting to post photos.

The red carpet has been rolled out, and unless the weather detoriates, the guests will enter via the main entrance.

The Norwegian royals arrived at Amalienborg just now, to prepare there before heading over to the Church.

Yep, there is plenty of snow in Copenhagen.

(And I'm ever so grateful that I decided to take a turn at TRF, instead of going out to wait outside of the church - it was freezing outside yesterday, and even if it looks slightly better today, I much prefer to stay inside.)

The Danish royal house does a lot of pomp, and traditions are important.

And the royal guard's marching band is quite good. When I'm at work I can hear them at the Changing of the Guards at Amalienborg, and I'm always very impressed.

The Crown Prince, Crown Princess and the Prince has now left Fredensborg to drive to Amalienborg, in Copenhagen.

Is this link working for everyone? It doesn't work on my computer. I guess it's probably my internet. :( They had a 2 second news flash on TV and I saw the Royal Guard's marching band. It looks sooo cold over there. Norwegianne, I would be staying inside too. brr. I heard that Mary's bringing a little thermos of warm water so the cold water doesn't scare the little Prince.

The choir is DR's girls' choir, of which Princess Alexandra is the protector.

DR1 mentioned that Crown Prince Haakon's great grandparents were married in the church - Prince Carl and Princess Ingeborg of Sweden.

People have started to arrive, i don't know who though. I cannot speak any Danish, but I think the presenters said that it was some of CP Mary's family
