And what if the King abdicates?

So King Albert must not be alowed to abdicate. Maybe not a regular option in Belgium but possible. Then there are not only three living Queens, but also two living Kings in Belgium.
Just as before with King Boudewijn and his father King Leopold.
Question: How were they styled, HM King Leopold en HM the King?

Fabiola is one truly classy lady. I can't imagine losing one baby, let alone five. That she has endured all that tragedy and still is gracious and kind and sweet, is really admirable.

I must say she loves prince Philip (the heir of the throne) as a son. If she hadn't any children it's a pitty. Now she has to live as the former king's widow. Weird situation in Belgium. Two queens instead of one. Muy question is: What's Fabiola's situation after her husband's death?

It has also happened in other countries that there where more than 1 Quuen. In the Uk from 1936 until 2002 there where always 2 Queens, from 1952-1953 even 3. Other examples recent examples are Denmark, Greece and many more.

Fabiola is a strong woman. It must be very hard to loose one child, and more harder to loose five children. If I will loose only one child and someone else of my friends is pregnant I would be very filled with bitterness.
I admire Queen Fabiola for her strength.
To Stefan: Another country with two Queens is Jordan. There are HM The Queen (Ranja) and HM Queen Noor.

I always wondered why they did not have any children. It was terrible to know about 5 miscarriages. Queen Fabiola is a strong woman.

I heard about 2 - 3 miscarriages but 5?!
Queen Fabiola nad her late husband are a pattern of brave, strong truth and specially love to spite of the contrary to destiny.
But on the other hand maybe it was their destiny. Show us someday that even royals are human too. That they can have problems like us and to spite them they becoming stronger together (faith to God, themselves and eachother, love).

Probably, Queen Fabiola will retain her title (HM The Queen of Belgium), Paola will be the Dowager Queen of Belgium, and Mathilde will be The Queen of the Belgians.

Fabiola the Queen Dowager; Paola (be someday) the Queen Mother; Mathilde the Queen of the Belgians.
Of course all depend of humans life.
Btw. it wouldn't be like it was in UK when we had Queens Mary the Queen Mother (known as Queen Mary), Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Elizabeth II.

I have just read this thread for the first time. I am so amazed by Queen Fabiola. She must be one of the strongest women to have ever lived. I don't know if I could get over one miscarriage, let alone five. Despite all of that heartbreak, it sounds like she has remained a sweet and loving person. She is truly amazing and special.

I think it is really a pity that Queen Fabiola did not have children, because she is an excellent person to educate children.

When Elizabeth II became Queen, her mother became HM the Queen Mother and her grandmother became HM Queen Mary. Which was the style of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium when Baudouin became King and Fabiola HM the Queen of the Belgians? Was she styled as HM Queen Elisabeth of Belgium or HM the Dowager Queen or something similar?

During the reigning of her son, she was styled the Her Majesty The Queen Mother, and then, with his abdication, she became HM Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. King Leolpold III has styled HM King Leolpold III.

So, I think when Philippe will become king Mathilde will become HM the Queen (of the Belgians), Paola HM the Queen Mother and Fabiola HM Queen Fabiola. I think her style will not change.

Yes. If Albert II die tomorrow, there will be three queens in Belgium. HM The Queen (Mathilde), HM The Queen Mother (Paola) and HM Queen Fabiola.
However, I think Queen Fabiola won't take long. =(

The title "Queen Mother" doesn't exist. If Philippe becames king, Paola will be styled HM Queen Paola just like Queen Fabiola, even being the mother of the reigning king.
