I am surprised that his casket was open. I can't recall another King or Queen having an open casket.

That wasn't during his funeral, but when people came to pay their last respects. It's always done like that in Belgium.

H.M. King Boudewijn had an open casket when the public could pay their last respects.

Yes you are perfectly right... ;)

On what date did he died ?
King Leopold III died on 25 September 1983.

Didn't his daughter Marie-Christine attend the funeral?:ermm:

Please forgive my ignorance, but who is Prince Alexandre?

Prince Alexandre is the son of Leopold III from his second marriage to Lilian Baels. The couple also got two daughters: Marie-Christine and Marie-Esmeralda. That would make them all half siblings of the present King.

Didn't his daughter Marie-Christine attend the funeral?:ermm:

The Princess did not attend the funeral of her father. She was involved in a scandal and lived rather estranged from her family. The scandal was her ´escape´ to Canada and her marriage and divorce to/of Paul Drucker in 1981. The marriage lasted 5 months, the divorce took 5 years.
She heard the news of her fathers death from television. However she was allowed to see her fathers body the evening before the funeral, in private.

To her mothers funeral she sent a cat btw.

She did what for her mother's funeral? Sent a cat?!

I have read that in several newspapers at the time. She had an extremely bad relationship with her mother, so that would explain the cat. But her spite didn´t include refusing the inheritance though...she accepted every euro of it.

That's the way it always goes. No matter how bad the relationship, the child is always there with his/her hand out for the inheritance. By "sending the cat" it means she was absent.

Yes, I discovered that yesterday too, when I asked about the cat on the Benelux Royals MB, I never heard the expression before though.

Does anybody have a guestlist of this funeral? I think the King of Norway was there and a lot of other royals.

It looks like Prince Bertil of Sweden is on one of the photos on page 1 but i´m not sure.
