Well, I suppose these days it would be stranger if Laurent did attend.

I'm fine with not having to look at the ever sulky Prince Laurent,Begian National Day is meant to be a celebration and he's a disgrace to the Royal Family and kingdom.

And it's going to happen even less and less now that Elisabeth and Gabriel are almost grown up and will be able to take on some engagements soon enough.

I hope we are going to be surprised by Elisabeth's presence to the concert on Saturday, especially since, going abroad, we won't be seeing much of her in the next few years.

Lovely to see Princess Elisabeth and her brother Prince Emmanuel at the walk about outside the cathedral, looks like a lovely day for it.

Elisabeth looks SO beautiful, she's so grown, almost a young woman now.

In Belgium ,The Royal Family is only the King's family.
Astrid had to attend.
Normally Prince Laurent attends all the Ball at the poorest part of Brussels called the Marolles.
This afternoon we will se.
He came the years before to keep his dotation , but now he has less , I think he will stay home. Princess Claire never attend since some years.

Since some months Prince Gabriel looks annoyed, does not smile. All is for Elisabeth who seems delighted.

The photos of Prince Laurent and Princess Claire from the Mass in Ghent had a look of awkwardness the Prince did not look at all happy and had his usual sullen face.

In contrast the Brussels images were a complete joy.

That senior French-speaking lady on the video was a little bit off, but I guess she was just overwhelmed to meet the Royal Family.

As I said once, he is a teenage boy and boys are sometimes like that at that age. I wonder though if being the second born and seeing his sister increasingly taking the spotlight as the heiress to the throne is having an effect on him. Primogeniture, which is an essential feature of hereditary monarchy, can be quite brutal sometimes.

I appreciate, however, that King Philippe often spends separate time with the boys alone, like when they went to Russia to watch the Belgian soccer game against Tunisia, or when Gabriel and Philippe were hiking together in Spain.

He is a teenager, I think it is pretty normal. Plus I've seen a video of him smiling when a woman was congratulating with his father. A proud son!
Elisabeth is in full bloom, which is extraordinary to see since most of us have seen her taking her first steps 16 years ago more or less.

That woman saying those things to Elisabeth was hard to watch and to be honest, I don't envy the girl who had to somehow respond to that woman...

I think that could be a feature too. Eventually he will understand the perks of being the spare (namely that he will be able to choose his on career).

The F-16 flew over in the formation of a number 5 to mark the 5th anniversary of the King’s reign.
Mathilde pointed it out to her husband.

Perfect and very special Military Parade (100 years of the end of WWI), and 5th years of King's reign. Very emotional end with the Dutch Singer and a text read in our 3 languages.
Proud about my Country.

Lovely events. Great seeing the family out all together and happy :flowers:

Why is Laurent in sunglasses in his military uniform, and in church :ohmy:Unless he has some eye condition I don't know about, that is just :bang: He looks like he was up drinking late the night before and he is hiding his hangover behind glasses.

I don't think Gabriel's attitude is about not being heir, but a normal teenage boy. Honestly born a royal or not, attending formal occasions aren't going to be exciting for kids, and some are worse at hiding it. In some ways he probably doesn't envy his sister at all, and what she faces as the future monarch and the duties.

Of course in private the parents would treat their kids equally, and would find special time for all of them. Like going to a football game or hiking. Behind closed doors birth order doesn't matter to parents.

I wonder if some where in Elisabeth, and her parent's minds, she is thinking this will be one if not last event she will attend for some time. She will soon be off to school in Wales.

She will have half terms to go back home, but I don't think her family will make her attend events during her time home. As the school website mention summer holidays starting on the 25th July, I really hope she will be given special permission to go back home for the National day next year since she's the heir to the throne.

While other British schools may finish on the date, UWC AC isn't like regular British schools due to it being a part of the UWC movement with sixteen other schools across the globe. The school year starts in about three weeks and Elisabeth will finish her first year on June 19th, not July 25th. https://www.atlanticcollege.org/events/2019/06/

Oh great, the internet fooled me!!!
She will be able to go back home for the Christmas concert as well!!!

Lovely photos and videos from today - thank you to all those who shared them.
Elisabeth is a real beauty, and I like the natural air of confidence she seems to have - not too 'in your face' at all but one can tell that she feels comfortable and that's nice to see, because it must be difficult being in the spotlight even if one is prepared for the role.
Both Gabriel and Emmanuel's likeness to Philippe is very strong IMO.

:previous: I feel that Emmanuel is a clone of his father at the same age, but Gabriel looks like a male version of his mother.

It is hard to believe that Elisabeth is only 16. Her confidence and poise are that of an adult. She is going to be the most eligible Princess in Europe some day and I cannot help but wonder who she will marry.

Her parents have done their jobs well.;)

I agree for Gabriel, he is definitely a mini Mathilde. And it is unbelievable to see Elisabeth...she is a completely different person from the reserved girl we saw in the past. She is so confident that she looks more like young woman than a 16 yo girl. She'll make her parents and the nation proud in the next few years.

And a première in our Royal Family : she speaks Dutch fluently !

Indeed...I read that her Dutch is superior to her French, and that she required extra tutoring in French.

I thought that the extra tutoring was needed because while speaking French at home her education is mainly in Flemish making it necessary to get extra lessons in French?

The SECOND pic there has such a lovely closeup of Elisabeth.

I love the picture of her kissing the boy in the wheelchair, it was so kind of her.

I think French is quite tricky when it comes to writing and since she does most of her reading/writing in Dutch, she probably needed tutoring in the written aspect of French, because she's quite fluent on it in a speaking manner ;)

I LOVED that photo of Lisa kissing the boy in the wheelchair. ..Princess Charming! ?

And yes it does make sense that she only needed assistance with writing French, it's her first language and the one she speaks at home.
