I read that but for some reason it just didn't sink into my brain. I really didn't focus on the whole question. I was also a little surprised it was only about Fred and Mary. That's certainly your right to choose who to focus on in your quiz. But I must admit I'm relatively new to royal watching and I'm still warming up to Fred and Mary. For some reason it has taken my longer to warm to them then to others. Not sure why. It just has.

Oh well, bring on the Dutch!!!

Beatrix's Sons

Here is a quiz about Queen Beatrix's three sons, their wives, and children. It is pretty well distributed, but we'll see. I hope this is tricky enough- there are a few difficult ones thrown in, but you guys suprise me a lot. Again, Queen Beatrix, and the rest of the Dutch royals, will follow later.

Beatrix's Sons: The Answers

1) Amalia (and also her sister Alexia, and her future baby brother or sister) is in the line of succession to the British throne. However, it is extremely unlikely that she would ever inherit it, as she is 778th in line (answer 2). Willem-Alexander, who this line came from (Maxima has no royal relations of note), was removed from succession because British monarchs, and their heirs, are not allowed to marry Roman Catholics. Although Maxima was married in a Protestant ceremony, and raises her daughters as such, she is still a practicing Roman Catholic (she was never forced to convert- she just had to promise to raise Amalia, Alexia, and baby Netherlands-aka baby #3 as Protestants)

2) De Erfprinses van Oranje, or the Hereditary Princess or Orange. However, this styling, to my knowledge, hasn’t been used for Amalia. She will only become Princess of Orange when her father becomes king, or dies.

3) Wassenaar

4) Villa Eikenhorst

5) Alex, or Alexander

6) Deutsche Bank, in New York City

7) Jorge Rafael Videla, and her father was the minister of agriculture. Although Maxima’s father, Jorge Horacio Zorreguieta Stefanini, was determined to be uninvolved with the deaths and other human mistreatment of this era, it was still a scandal. The Dutch parliament finally approved of the marriage, (I wonder what W-A would have done if they said no- we might be talking about Crown Princess Laurentien now…...no comment…….), but then there was the question of his attending the wedding, and what message that would send out. In the end, he offered not to attend, and Maxima’s mother stayed away too. Poor Maxima.

8) At a dinner party in Seville, Spain

9) “His hips are a little rigid!” (I love Maxima’s sense of humor!)

10) The late Prince Claus of the Netherlands, husband of Queen Beatrix, and father of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. He was German, and even was conscripted into the German army in WWII, but was taken as a prisoner of war by US Allied forces before actually taking part in real fighting. He married Queen Beatrix in 1966, but the Dutch had not forgotten what had happened to them during the war. However, Prince Claus, like Princess Maxima, won over the people, so much so that, prior to his death, he was often considered the most popular member of the Dutch royal family!

11) 1884, and the sister, who became queen, was Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. Although her father died in 1890, her mother, Queen Emma, was declared Regent until Wilhelmina turned 18, at which point Wilhelmina herself was able to take over. She reigned for over fifty years, and was Queen regent (queen in full, not with her mother serving as regent) for exactly fifty years, when she abdicated in 1948. Wilhelmina’s only child, and successor, was her daughter, Queen Juliana, who reigned from 1948 to 1980, when she herself abdicated, in favor of her daughter, the current queen, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Although Willem-Alexander will be the first male after three females, (if he outlives his mother), it won’t be for long- succeeding King Willem-Alexander I will be her majesty, Queen Catharina-Amalia I.

12) Get married! In a 1999 television interview, he stated he wouldn’t marry within the next ten years, as he was only 32 years old, and his father didn’t marry until he was about 40. I’m guessing that interview had to have taken place in January, February, or March, because in April of 1999, he met a young woman named Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti, with whom he reportedly fell for that night, and persued her avidly afterwards.

13) The Diamond Festoon Tiara

14) Petra Laurentien

15) Brussels, Belgium

16) Lady Louise Windsor (Eloise), and Infanta Leonor of Spain (Eleonore)

17) Eerste Vrijzinnig Christelijk Lyceum

18) CNN

19) Laurel Wreath Tiara.

20) Street prostitution

21) Jonkheer (male)/Jonkvrouwe van Amsberg,

22) Due to her past relations with gangsters, and their falsehoods about it.

23) Princess Laurentien

24) Mabel

25) Johan (Johan Friso Bernhard Christiaan David), Mabel, Emma (Emma Luana Ninette Sophie), and Joanna (Joanna Zaria Nicoline Milou)

26) Open Society Institute

27) Van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg

28) The Sun Ray Motif Tiara, it was a second setting of the Mellerio Sapphire Tiara. Princess Maxima has also worn this tiara twice, and Princess Mabel wore it at the 70th birthday celebrations this year in Norway. It is the only tiara Mabel has worn.

29) Bows! Her wedding dress was covered with bows, bows and more bows- small bows, medium bows, and large bows. Bows, bows, bows, bows, bows!

30) Viktor and Rolf

Lady K,

I'm not so certain that the Margareta of Sweden sapphire and diamond brooch was a gift from Frederik to Mary.

It would seem more likely that it was a gift from HM The Queen, who's possession it was in before that of Mary's :flowers:

Queen Masrgrethe gave the brooch to Mary either for the birth or the christenuing of Christian. Mary wore it for the first time at Christian's christening.

Wow- I'm that quiz was as hard as I thought it might be. Sometimes I write hard questions and you guys get them right off, so I never know. I hope you guys are interested, though, instead of being too frustrated. Jordan is next, and I think that might be a little easier.

But thanks you guys, for participating. I'm enjoying learning, too!

I don't follow the japan, jordan and other non-european Houses as close as the european so my knowledge is not so great there.

Sorry for such a long delay in posting the answers- I had some problems with Word, where I write them. Here are the answers.

The Land of the Rising Sun: The Answers about the Empire of Japan

1) The Chrysanthemum Throne

2) 125th

3) Heisei. He will be called Emperor Heisei. His father’s ruling name was Emperor Hirohito, but is called, posthumously, Emperor Showa.

4) November 12, 1990, in Tokyo, almost two years after his father died. Although he became Emperor on the day his father died, January 7, 1989, he was not formally enthroned until then.

5) None- there was not a coronation, but Japan holds a Ceremony of Enthronement. Haven’t I tried this trick on all the other quizzes? 158 countries, 159 including Japan, sent representatives to see his Enthronement Ceremony in 1990.

6) Shoda

7) Nisshin Flour Milling Company

8) The Thames and I: A Memoir of Two Years At Oxford.

9) Viola

10) Togu-gosho Palace

11) The Imperial Household Law of 1947

12) 1998

13) Russia, Moscow, Russia to be exact. Her father was a diplomat, and was sent to work in Moscow.

14) Belmont High School, Belmont, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

15) Toshi no miya (Princess Toshi)

16) Her parents. This seems obvious to many people from the western world, but traditionally, Japanese royals were named by the emperor. So the choice many people probably guessed was in fact that- just a lucky guess.

17) Prince Aya

18) “Molecular Phylogeny of Jungle fowls, genus Gallus and Monophyletic Origin of Domestic Fowls” A+ for you if you knew that!

19) Koyamaki tree (Japanese Umbrella-pine)

20) It is “Princess Teddy”. It is an teddy bear with pale honey fur, wearing a tiara and white sash.

21) ?35,000, as a town planner in Tokyo. However, she was given 7.6 million pounds from the Japanese government as a wedding present.

22) He is the youngest brother of Emperor Akihito, and was the second son and sixth child of the previous emperor. He is still in the line of sucession, behind Crown Prince Naruhito, Prince Akishino, and Prince Hisahito. He is known for his cancer research.

23) The oldest living member is Prince Takahito, Prince Mikasa. (Mikasa-no-miya Takahito Shinno), the paternal uncle of Emperor Akihito. He was born on December 2, 1915. Prior to her death on December 18, 2004, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamatsu, also known as Princess Kikuko (Nobuhito Shinno-hi Kikuko), was the oldest, born on December 26, 1911. She was married to Prince Takamatsu, the paternal uncle of Emperor Akihito and third son of Emperor Taisho, Akihito’s grandfather.

24) The members of the Royal House are as follows (common names): Emperor Akihito, Prince Masahito, Prince Naruhito, Prince Akishino, Princess Aiko, Princess Mako, Princess Kako, Prince Hisahito; Prince Takahito, Prince Tomohito, Prince Yoshihito, Prince Norihito, Princess Akiko, Princess Yohko, Princess Tsuguko, Princess Noriko, and Princess Ayako. To draw the lines, I’ll explain. Emperor Akihito, Emperor Heisei, is the father of Crown Prince Naruhito, and Prince Akishino, Fumihito. Naruhito is father of Princess Aiko, and Akishino is the father of Mako, Kako, and Hisahito. Emperor Akihito is the elder brother of Prince Masahito, aka Prince Hitachi. Their father was Emperor Hirohito, Emperor Showa, who was the older brother of Takahito, Prince Mikasa. Prince Mikasa is the father of Prince Tomohito (Prince of Mikasa), Prince Yoshihito (Prince Katsura), and Prince Norihito (Prince Takamado). Prince Tomohito is father of Princesses Akiko and Yohko, and Prince Norihito is father of princesses Tsuguko, Noriko, and Ayako. Lots of girls- that’s why, prior to Hisahito’s birth, succession was such a critical issue. I hope that that was somewhat followable. Females, the daughters of the princes, are removed from the royal household on their marriages, (such as the former Princess Sayako). Also, wives are not considered true members of the Imperial Household, unlike in most of the other monarchies, which consider consorts as members.

25) From 1888 to 1948, it was called ‘Kyujo’, the palace castle, and prior to that, the Edo castle.

26) Goryo Bokujo.

The Royal Family of Jordan- The Answers

* this thread has been inactive for a while, but I'm going to add to it anyway, and maybe it will catch someone else's eye.

1) Name, in order, all four of King Hussein’s wives. (please list their full maiden names, and their throne names)
  • Queen Dina. Sharifa Dina bint 'Abdul'l-Hamid, they were married for two years (April 1955-1957), including one year of separation. She was seven years older than King Hussein. She is now married to Asad Sulayman Abd al-Qadir
  • Princess Muna al-Hussein, born Antoinette Avril Gardiner, she used to (prior to her marriage) be called Toni. She was married to King Hussein from May of 1961 to 1972, and is the mother of King Abdullah II.
  • Queen Alia, neé Alia Baha el-Din Toukan. She died tragically in a helicopter crash in Jordan in 1977.
  • Queen Noor, born Lisa Najeeb Halaby, she took the name Noor upon converting to Islam. She was the final wife of King Hussein.

They are, in order, Princess Alia (Queen Dina); King Abdullah II, Prince Feisal, Princess Zein, and Princess Aisha, with Princess Muna; Princess Haya, Prince Ali, and Abir Muhaisin, with Queen Alia; and Prince Hamzah, Prince Hashem, Princess Iman and Princess Raiyah, with Queen Noor.

6) The Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.A., which is regarded as one of the world's best hospitals.

7) A medal. King Abdullah I had given it to him, and had insisted King Hussein wear it, and the metal deflected the bullet.

8) 15. That's a lot, unless you consider that the Harry Potter series has been translated into over sixty languages!

9) 43rd

10) at birth! (haha- I probably got some of you on that!). KAII was crown prince by birth, by tradition and Royal Decree, until April 1, 1965, when another Royal Decree was made. He was made Crown Prince again, again by Royal Decree, on January 24, 1999, and this time it stuck- he was the Crown Prince until he became king, just a couple of weeks later.

11) Primary school was at the Islamic Educational College in Amman, Jordan, and then he went to St. Edmund's School in Surrey, England; Secondary school was at the Eaglebrook School in the U.S. and Deerfield Academy in the U.S.

12) Star Trek- he’s a Trekkie! He was on the show, in the jumpsuit, and I think he even did the hand gesture. I’ve seen a picture of it somewhere, I’ll find it. –I found it, on Wikipedia! How funny!!! Here’s a link ahahahahahaha

13) The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

14) No one. The Crown Prince is a position which must be named by the king. Although King Abdullah II’s oldest son, Prince Hussein, is assumed to be his father’s successor, he is not crown prince. Prince Hamzah was Abdullah’s crown prince from his appointment on the day of Abdullah’s enthronement on February 7, 1999, to November 28, 2004, when Abdullah wrote a public letter to Hamzah releasing him as crown prince. He wrote “Your holding this symbolic position has restrained your freedom and hindered our entrusting you with certain responsibilities that you are fully qualified to undertake.”

15) He likes to barbecue in the palace garden! I wonder what he likes to barbecue?

16) Christy Turlington and Angelina Jolie.

17) The group is the Forum of Young Global Leaders, and Rania is a member of the Foundation board (kind of like the Board of Directors), and is also the Chairperson of the Selection Committee.

18) Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, the uncle of the Prophet Mohammed.

19) Romance Novels. JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!! He likes to read history books and biographies. But it would be funny if he liked to read harlequin romance novels. He also likes the internet, and participates in cyber-discussions. I wonder if he’s ever visited TRF? If he’s reading this, Hi!

20) She also used to be a television journalist. Rym was a Middle East Correspondent for CNN.

21) He is Lakhdar Brahimi, and he is the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan.

22) Princess Fahdah

23) Princess Hala

24) Muhaisen, and she is the adopted daughter of the late King Hussein and Queen Alia.

25) Her mother died in a plane crash, and Abir was one of the few people in the crash who lived. She is a teacher here in the U.S., and lives a very private life. The last time I remember seeing a picture of her among the other members of the Jordanian Royal family was about the time of King Hussein’s death
