Although he was invited, Putin is a dictator comparable the ones who dragged humanity to World War II.

Stalin was a dictator (and probably one of the most brutal ones in European history). Nevertheless, he was a key ally against Nazi Germany and both PM Churchill and President Roosevelt appeared on several pictures with him.

I believe that HM was officially the guest of honor, as well.

As noted by Nico, King Harald did not applaud. Would that mean that he too did not recognise Queen Elizabeth's II contribution to the victory?
As for the dictator, the dogs barks, but the caravan goes on. Leaders of the enlighten western regimes are consensus figures bought by the moneyed elite.

I was making a point that being a dictator does not prevent one from being photographed with the POTUS or the British PM for example. Putin was there because of Russia's role in the war.

King Harald is a big fan of The Queen, and has spoken warmly of her several times in the Norwegian media. He did applaud before she entered the podium.

The Soviet Union started the war as an ally of Germany and helped to invade Poland but Hitler made the mistake of invading the USSR causing them to switch sides.
I read an hysterical comment on the DM story with the photo of Obama and the NZ GG helping the Queen down the steps while Putin stood off to the side by himself not looking at the Queen or Obama. The comment was basically that Putin had relatives that died in the war and that Queen and Philip didn't at least on the right side of the war. I had to shake my head at that. The Queen and Philip actually served during the war.

In fairness there appears to be others who aren't applausing in this photo, Maxima being another one, it might be just how the camera caught them. However, in the case of Putin, his appearance is also playing to the home crowd and more important for him is how clapping the Queen might be received back in Russia.

Prince Charles called Putin a dictator a few weeks ago during his Canadian tour. I suppose the Russian president is not very fond of the British Royal Family right now.

The Royal House, however, after much controversy, made it clear in its WWW page that Maxima has a courtesy title of queen (as the king's wife), but should be referred to as "Queen Maxima, Princess of the Netherlands" and not "Queen Maxima of the Netherlands", the latter style being reserved solely to a reigning queen like Beatrix.

It boggles my mind why *Did not ALL HEADS OF STATES give the Queen a large round of applause when she appeared? She is the Queen of England, the British Empire for heavens sake. She served in WW11, what more does anyone need? She was there in the mist of it all, as some of the others and she is the longest serving head of state there.....where is common courtesy these days?

Daniel, according to the words of CP Frederick of Denmark, is a "very humble man" (in a good sense, of course). He and Victoria are obviously in love, but, in public life at least, he's OK to let Victoria shine, whereas he plays the role of the supporting consort. Maxima is also very much in love with Willem-Alexander, but she is a strong, independent woman and seems to favor more of an "equal marriage". At least that's how I see it.

Not to change the subject but, Maxima's sunglasses were just atrocious! What on earth was she thinking wearing them with that outfit?!
