Qatar to observe three days of mourning after the former emir, who ruled for more than 20 years, passes away at 84.

Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani passed away on Sunday aged 84, the Emiri Diwan announced.

He ruled Qatar from 1972 until 1995.

Qatar will observe three days of mourning, the Emiri Diwan said.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani was the grandfather of the current leader of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Doha, October 23 (QNA) - The Emiri Diwan announced the death of HH the Grandfather Emir Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al-Thani on Sunday evening 23 October 2016 at age 84, an Emiri Diwan statement said.

The Emiri Diwan statement added: May Allah have mercy on his soul and make his residence paradise, and grant him the best reward for what he achieved to his homeland and nation.

HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani ordered three days of public mourning across the country. (QNA)

Funeral will be held today following Alaser prayer at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque
in Doha.

Yes, The late Sheikh Khalifa lived in France for 9 years following the coup led by his son the former Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani. He returned home in 2004 to bury his late wife Sheikha Mouza bint Ali bin Saud Al Thani who accompanied him during his stay in France.
