The Middletons have always been big tennis fans. Michael Middleton gained his tennis colours while boarding at Clifton College.

As for the Middletons- they certainly have a love of tennis in the blood. We see the entire family out for it. Nice seeing Michael.

Did you know

When Francis Martineau Lupton died in 1921 the minister at Mill Hill chapel, Leeds said he was "a member of a family which for generations has been associated with the commercial, municipal, educational and religious life of Leeds"

Francis was Catherine’s great-great grandfather

As long ago as 1926 the Duchess’s relatives played host to Princess Mary, the aunt, while another relative was a friend of Queen Victoria’s son Prince Arthur and of the future George V before the First World War.

Mike Middleton comes from a line of wealthy Yorkshire wool merchants, whose trust fund enabled him to send his three children to public school. His grandfather was a solicitor, his father a pilot. All three generations boarded at Clifton College in Bristol.

In 1962 the Duchess’s grandfather Peter Middleton, an airline pilot, acted as first officer to the Duke of Edinburgh on a two-month flying tour of South America.

The Duke piloted 49 of the tour’s 62 flights, often with Middleton by his side, and later sent him a letter of thanks and a pair of gold cufflinks. Peter Middleton died in 2010, days before the Duke and Duchess announced their engagement.“

#royal #flashback Francis Martineau Lupton, the great-great grandfather of the Duchess of Cambridge, lost his three sons in WWI:

Captain Maurice Lupton killed in action 1915, Lt Lionel Martineau Lupton killed during battle 1916, Missing Major Francis Ashford Lupton found dead in 1917

From whizzing around Cambridge in a Rolls Royce, studying at Trinity College, to losing their lives a mere four years later – the spoils of war altered family life forever.

“He never recovered from his triple blow,” Peter Middleton – Catherine’s late grandfather – wrote in a family biography. “He never broke down. But the light had gone out of his life.”

In their memory, their father transformed the family home, Rockland, to an institution for the children of sailors and soldiers. He also contributed financially to many causes and institutions.

Referring to Simon, Nicholas, Richard and Michael Middleton, a neighbour of the family says: “The boys all went to boarding school, and clearly the family was well off. They were never showy, but they were what you might describe as refined.”

The archives at Clifton College, the private boarding school in Bristol, record that Michael Middleton was a praepostor, the title for a college prefect.

Michael Middleton represented Clifton College at rugby and also gained his tennis colours.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s grandmother, Valerie Glassborow, was born and raised in Marseille France, where her father, Frederick, was the managing financial advisor for London County and Westminster Bank.

The family moved back to Britain when she was in her teens and settled in Leeds, where she met Peter Middleton. They married in 1946 and had four sons including the Duchess’s father, Michael.

During the Second World War, Valerie Glassborow was formally employed at the top secret ‘Government Code and Cypher School’, Bletchley Park. There she was tasked with monitoring and intercepting diplomatic messages and checking that the listening stations were doing their job.

Miss Glassborow was one of the first people to learn that the war had come to an end.

During Catherine’s official visit to Bletchley Park in 2014, a friend and work colleague of Miss Glassborow, Lady Marion Body, shared a story with the Duchess -

“It was 15 August 1945, I think it was in the afternoon, and Valerie, Mary and I happened to be on that shift. Our superior officer, Commander Williams, came into the room smiling and he said, ‘Well done, girls. A signal has been intercepted from Tokyo to Geneva and it’s the signal that the Japanese are surrendering.

“We just sat there in complete silence. Commander Williams shuffled about and then he said, ‘Well, you bloody well get on with your work now,” which broke the ice. We all laughed.

“He did say a message has gone to the King and the Prime Minister but it cannot be announced until Geneva has sent on the message to London.”

Valerie Middleton died in 2006

Thanks for sharing Rudolph. Very interesting story indeed. I didn't realise that Catherine's grandmother worked at Bletchley.

The former head of Marlborough College, Edward Gould, who was a guest at the nuptials of Catherine and William, told the BBC in an interview before the royal wedding, The Duchess of Cambridge was a "very popular girl" when she was a pupil at the private school in Wiltshire.

Marlborough College is the alma mater of Samantha Cameron, wife of former Prime Minister David Cameron. Frances Osborne, wife of former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne. Princess Eugenie, as well as Mark Phillips, Olympic horseman and former husband of Princess Anne.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s great-grandmother Olive Middleton, nee Lupton.

City of Leeds archives describes the family thusly, “The Luptons of Leeds were landed gentry; a political and business dynasty. The family has been landowners in the Leeds area since the 18th century”

Referring to Michael Middleton’s trust fund, a legal source in Leeds, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Telegraph: “The Lupton property holdings were huge, and generated large amounts of rent. I believe most of this has now been put into stocks, shares and so on, and generates an income. Of course it will be shared among descendants, but the amounts involved are believed to be substantial.”

Surely James won't be doing this job through the winter months? Jan, Feb in the Scottish Highlands, brrrr! I know it looks very romantic, especially when there's a snowfall, but there is a limit!

Perhaps a consultant management could help boomf. Many businesses need a revision.
