Currently, but that is changing in Saudi Arabia. As they are now moving to the next generation, it us based upon merit. The current crown prince is not the eldest grandson, he has an older brother and at least a few older cousins.

HRH prince Mohammed bin Faisal Al Saud (79-80 years old ) has died on Jan 14th ,2017. The Late prince is the son of the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia & his wife Iffat Al Thunayan . He was married to Muna Azzam Pasha, the daughter of Abdul Rahman Hassan Azzam, an Egyptian diplomat and politician
