Sheikha Sabika urges equal opportunity for Arab women
First Lady of Bahrain calls for 'fair and efficient' role of Arab women in development of Arab world. Arab women should be given equal opportunity under a fair legal framework for female rights, the wife of the king of Bahrain said in a interview published Monday to mark International Women's Day.
Sheikha Sabika al-Khalifa called for the framework to be put in place in the Arab world to ensure women had a "fair and efficient" role in development and "equal opportunity".
"Opposing progress is inadmissible," the first wife of Sheikh Hamad bin Issa Al-Khalifa told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, adding that Islam allowed for the development of society, contrary to the "mistaken" view of extremists.
"We have to adapt to the demands of our age and understand our differences," she said in Beirut ahead of a two-day conference, hosted by Lebanese first lady Andree Lahud, on the theme of "Woman and Armed Conflicts."
"We have to accept our differences to improve our image," said Sheikha Sabika, whose first son, Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, is Bahrain's crown prince.
Bahrain has embarked on political reform with Sheikh Hamad turning the Gulf archipelago into a constitutional monarchy and restoring parliament in 2002.

New era dawns as council marks day A NEW era of equal rights and opportunity is dawning in Bahrain, spearheaded by the Supreme Council for Women. It celebrates its fourth anniversary tomorrow with a declaration of determination to promote the role of women in the country's development.
The council is chaired by Her Highness Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad. It is forging ahead with a variety of projects, it said in a statement released yesterday, to mark the anniversary.
They include the plan to enable women politically and help them prepare for running in the municipal and parliamentary elections next year.
But ensuring women get elected to parliament was not the end of the road for the council, it said.
"The council is working on establishing the ideal foundation to provide the legal framework that will further promote the role of women in the housing, health, education and economic sectors among others," said the statement. It said this was being carried out through the signing of co-operation agreements with national and international organisations.
"Many of the agreements have already been signed and the remainder will soon follow," said the council. Despite the short period since is formation, much has been achieved, with a focus on the importance of ensuring that women have the widest range of benefits, it said.
One programme is the Shaikha Sabeeka Award for Bahraini women, which is one of the practical means of promoting the participation of women in various sectors. The award is presented every two years to the best ministry, government organisation or private sector establishment for their outstanding support to Bahraini women employees. It aims at encouraging support to Bahraini women and backing them for the benefit of public interest.
A panel, chaired by the council's Secretary General Lulwa Al Awadhi, was set up in June last year to propose the standards and conditions for the award. Forming the council had put the official stamp of support on the drive to achieve women's true potential, said the statement.
"The establishment of the council, under its first patron, Shaikha Sabeeka, came to add the needed official status towards organising efforts related to women," it said
The council said its policies were founded on the principles of the Bahraini constitution and international laws related to women, as well as being a direct extension of His Majesty's reform process. Among its outstanding achievements this year were the amendments introduced to the Royal decree establishing the council, granting it a wide-ranging jurisdiction that will be instrumental in its future success.
The council also highlighted the national strategy to promote the role of women, which was endorsed by the King. A national conference was held under the theme Women are Deserving Partners in the Country's Development and Growth, to achieve a partnership with the official and non-official parties concerned. The council was established on August 22, 2001, by a Royal order to assist the government draw up policies on women's issues. It comprises 14 appointed on the basis of their knowledge of women's issues and chaired by Shaikha Sabeeka. The council's role is to propose public policy to the government on issues relevant to women and recommend amendments to existing legislation.
