New Sultan

His Majesty is married with four children- as it says in the genealogy which I referred to previously (page 9 of the Oman section of the Royal Ark website).

The late Sultan Qaboos death announcement on Oman TV.

HM the new Sultan Haitham bin Tareq accepts the greetings from members of the Royal family on the occasion of his enthronement.

Do you happen to know if Sultan Haitham will name his son as Crown Prince? The late Sultan Qaboos had a unique way of dealing with the succession line.

The late Sultan Qaboos had no children so that was his way of dealing with the succession. Traditionally, sons have inherited from fathers in Oman

I assume the first couple of gentlemen exchanging kisses were the Sultan's brothers and sons? All other gentlemen kept it with handshakes.

I read that Sultan Haitham is also childless. That is why I asked the person, who posted the link about his children, about the succession line.

Unlike the late Sultan Qaboos, Sultan Haitham has many brothers & two sons. He may choose any of them to succeed him.

More likely a son or nephew. Choosing a successor of the same generation as him would mean a transition again in the near future. It’s likely he would choose one of his own sons or a nephew if he thought them more fit.

Haitham seems a good choice by Qaboos though many thought his brother Assad the top contender. Haitham has been a well known face for state of royal visits in Oman and abroad. He was a diplomat prior to minister of culture.

I find it fitting that instead of the counsel choosing a successor they opened Qaboos letter instead. They honoured his choice.

in a previous post the wife of the new Sultan is referred to as the new Queen of Oman. This is incorrect. The wife of the Sultan dies not appear to hold any specific title denoting her rank as wife of the ruler. This is similar to Morocco, for example, where the wife of the king is not given the title of queen. The wife of the sultan would certainly not be a queen as her husband is not a king. In Ottoman times there was a rank of sultana, the wife of a sultan, but this has not been used in Oman. Oman is a male dominated society, similar to Saudi Arabia, where women are not really acknowledged as being important - one hopes this will change now in Oman and one way of changing things would be to formally acknowledge the role of the wife of the new ruler.

The Prince of Wales has travelled overnight to Oman, following the death of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. The Prince will attend the first of three days of official condolences.
He will also meet with new Sultan, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said.

King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands will also be in Oman today (Sunday Jan 12) for the first day of official condolences. He will be accompanied by the Dutch Foreign Minister.

Wishing the Sultan Haitham all the luck in the world.

Sultan Haitham was among the guests at the Inthronisation of King Willem Alexander in 2013 in Amsterdam and was placed opposite our present Queen and former Queen Beatrix at the gala dinner at the Rijksmuseum hosted by the Queen Beatrix on the eve before the Inthronisation just to emphasize the high esteem and friendship between the two Royal Families.

Hence it is only normal King Willem Alexander is in Oman at present.
Sultan Qaboos often stayed for longer periods of time in Germany and these stays also saw visits between the Sultan and the dutch RF.

The new Sultan, Haitham, was in Amsterdam for the Investiture of King Willem-Alexander. And earlier, when Queen Beatrix, the Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima made a visit to Sultan Qaboos, the now Sultan Haitham was their escort during the visit. I am sure the new Sultan did appreciate King Willem-Alexander's swift change of agenda, to bring his condolences and to welcome the new Sultan.

I liked it that the King, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch delegation were properly dressed in jacquet with black gilet and black tie, the only delegation so far with this classic formal day mourning dresscode. (The Prince of Wales just wore his blue suit and did not change for the audience at the palace).

Sorry to hear this news - may Sultan Qaboos rest in peace.

It seemed that he was quite close to the British RF.
