Bulgarian Royal Burial Sites

Bulgaria's monarchs are buried in various locations in Bulgaria and other countries.
Unlike most European monarchies, Bulgaria never had a royal mausoleum.

BULGARIA

Ferdinand I - His final wish was to be buried in Bulgaria. However, the Communist authorities in Bulgaria would not allow it, so he was buried in the family crypt in St. Augustin, Coburg.

Princess Marie Louise of Bourbon-Parma - Aged just 29, she was buried in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Louis of France in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Eleonore, Tsaritsa consort of Bulgaria - Her last wish was to be buried in the cemetery of a 12th-century church at Boyana, near Sofia. During the Socialist period, however, the grave was broken into, her jewelry stolen and then the memorial stone bulldozed back in the grave, with no visible marks left over the ground. However, after the democratic changes in 1989, the original memorial stone was excavated and the site was restored back to the original state.

Boris III - The coffin of Tsar Boris III was taken by train to the mountains and buried in Bulgaria's largest and most important monastery, the Rila Monastery. After taking power in September 1944, the Communist-dominated government had his body exhumed and secretly buried in the courtyard of Vrana Palace, near Sofia. At a later time, the Communist authorities moved the zinc coffin from Vrana to a secret location, which remains unknown to this day. After the fall of communism, an excavation was made at Vrana Palace. Only Boris's heart was found, as it had been put in a glass cylinder outside the coffin. The heart was taken by his widow in 1994 to Rila Monastery, where it was reinterred.

Giovanna, Tsaritsa consort of Bulgaria - She is buried in the Communal Cemetery of Assisi, Italy, where she had married King Boris III in 1930.

Actually, Ferdinand's coffin is still "waiting" in the crypt. He was never officially buried. The last attempt to get him for a burial here was 10 years ago but it never happened - thanks, Communist governments, I see you.

The Memorial Tomb of Alexander I of Battenberg, better known as the Battenberg Mausoleum in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is the mausoleum and final resting place of Prince Alexander I of Bulgaria (1857–1893), the first Head of State of modern Bulgaria.
