The origin of this visit was a meeting between Crown Princess Victoria and Bethanie Carney Almroth, associate professor of ecotoxicology, in connection with the Sustainable Development Goals Forum in New York 2017.
- Together with a colleague I had arranged a side arrangement on plastic in the sea which the Crown Princess visited. Then we met again this summer when I participated in a panel at the Volvo Ocean Race. The Crown Princess then suggested that we should discuss further at a lunch, but it never happened.
Instead, in the past six months, Bethanie Carney Almroth has been in contact with the Crown Princess's Marshal of the Court to arrange a site visit. Two weeks ago she got the information that this visit would be done.
- It became very stressful to catch up with all the preparations. Many people have been involved in making the visit as good as possible, and we have also cleaned and scrubbed our premises in all corners.
- It is of course very fun to get a visit from the Crown Princess but also important; this means an opportunity to present the University's role in important issues, for example when it comes to plastics and toxins in the sea, explains Bethanie Carney Almroth. And that the Crown Princess is interested in issues in environmental research, which she can highlight in the arenas where she works, is of course very important.

This was how it looked when Crown Princess Victoria visited the Marine and Water Mamagement on Wednesday afternoon. She and governor Anders Danielsson were received by Director General Jakob Granit and Chief of Staff Maria Hellsten. After a short lunch, the Crown Princess got to know more about our work, among other things, sea planning, efforts to save the Baltic Sea and how we work with other countries on the issue. Another important issue for us is the goal of a more environmentally friendly hydropower in Sweden and our mission to, together with other authorities, produce a national plan for environmental testing. The visit ended with a visit to center for fisheries control where the Crown Princess got an insight into how the monitoring of fishing in marine protected areas goes.

The Swedish Marine and Water Management about the visit
- The Crown Princess is very familiar and interested in issues related to our marine environment, we are very pleased that she visits us. Her interest also makes the public aware of the challenges that exist, says director general Jakob Granit.
- We talked about how the sea is associated with land and we handle it in sea planning. We also talked about which social services we have and can develop in the sea, such as energy production, transport, recreation and food through fishing. We gave examples of how the authority handles various interests that collide and how we try to find consensus, says Thomas Johansson, head of the Marine Planning Unit.
- We talked about the importance of collaboration on issues relating to the marine environment in order to achieve successful effects. The Crown Princess was particularly interested and asked questions about methods for reducing eutrophication and the condition for sea eagles, says Mia Dahlström.
- I talked about the importance of hydropower today and historically, about the hydro power's environmental impact and about the way to a new legislation for hydropower, the process that we are currently planning to implement, says Björn Sjöberg.
