King Harald and Queen Sonja will pay an official visit to Denmark from June 15 - June 16, 2023, it was announced by the Norwegian Royal Palace today, May 8.

** kongehuset: Kongeparet på offisielt besøk til Danmark **

At the invitation of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, Their Majesties King Harald and Queen Sonja are traveling on an official visit to Denmark on 15 and 16 June 2023. The visit starts in Copenhagen and ends in Aarhus.

The visit marks the historical ties and the close neighborly relationship between Norway and Denmark and between the two royal houses. From the government, Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt, Business Minister Jan Christian Vestre and Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland follow.

In addition to confirming and strengthening the good relationship between Norway and Denmark, the visit will contribute to increased business cooperation with a focus on green industrial development and strengthening energy cooperation. Sustainable green shipping and health and defense technology are also on the agenda, in addition to the promotion of Norwegian literature.

The royal couple will arrive in Copenhagen on the royal ship "Norge" on the morning of 15 June and will be received by Queen Margrethe. In the evening, the Royal Couple and Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary will board the Royal Norwegian Ship and the Royal Ship Dannebrog respectively and head for Århus where there will be a joint arrival in the morning and further program on Friday 16. June.

The program for the visit will be announced at The International Press Centre, IPC , on 16 May.

Yes, an official visit, not a state visit. As such there will be a good deal of focus on trade.
They will naturally meet with QMII, and no doubt M&F as well and I should be very surprised if there isn't a grand dinner of some sort.

- All three majesties are getting older and more frail, I think such visits between them is all we can expect. They don't need to be on and 100 % focused. And they will be forgiven for withdrawing for an hour or two to rest.
Anyway, they are personal friends so it's just as much pleasure as work.

Nice to see that Dannebrog will get some sailing time. It should delight people who loves to watch ships.
And with a bit of luck we will get some good comparing shots of the two royal yachts.

Looking forward to it!

From the press release of the DRF

"The Queen welcomes the Royal Couple on Thursday morning 15 June at Nordre Toldbod, where the Norwegian royal ship Norge arrives at the Port of Copenhagen. Their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince and Crown Princess will then participate together with the Royal Couple and the Norwegian business delegation at a conference in Danish Industry. That same evening, Her Majesty hosts a gala dinner at Amalienborg with the participation of representatives from the Danish and Norwegian business community. After the end of the gala dinner, the Norwegian royal couple and the Crown Prince couple will board the Royal Ship Norge and the Royal Ship Dannebrog, respectively, and set course for Aarhus with a joint arrival on Friday 16 June in the morning.

In Aarhus, the Crown Prince Couple and the Norwegian Royal Couple will continue the programme, which includes, among other things, an official lunch at Aarhus Town Hall."

So not a state visit, just an official one. Interesting. :whistling:

I don't think anyone should expect any type of state visit (incoming or outgoing) any time soon. Sad, as every other RF is able to do them.

At least calling it an official visit makes it more acceptable optically as Frederik and Mary are the de facto hosts. :whistling:

Another norwegian official visit to Denmark since the centenary celebrations in 2005. Very much looking forward to it!

Why is that?

There is normally only one state visit in each direction during a (shared) reign. Since Harald ascended the throne both the state visit of Norway to Denmark (1991) and that of Denmark to Norway (1992) already took place; shortly after the new reign started. So, the next state visit will only take place once either one of them had a change in monarch.

Previous state visits between the countries included:
1958: Norway (Olav) to Denmark (Frederick) --> shortly after Olav became king (it was his first state visit! - the second one was to Sweden)
1960: Denmark (Frederick) to Norway (Olav) --> shortly after Olav became king (but after the new king had visited him first)
1973: Denmark (Margrethe) to Norway (Olav) --> shortly after Margrethe became queen (it was her second state visit - followed by state visits to Sweden and Finland; I assume the one to Yugoslavia had already been planned for her father)
1974: Norway (Olav) to Denmark (Margrethe) --> shortly after Margrethe became queen (of course -as junior monarch- she had first been on a state visit to Norway)

Perhaps The Queen suffers from huge mobility problems and the CP couple have to overtake lots of host functions, I guess.

It's not related to QM's back. The CP couple have done that during all state visits since the Greek (2009) and the business promotions. QM has only received them, hosted and attended the gala dinners and possible return events

But then King Carl Gustaf paid 2 State Visits to Denmark. And as he came later to the throne then Queen Margrethe both where made to her.

Let’s now hope that King Harald can leave the Hospital soon to begin with…

He’s the most frail of these 3 majesties and the journey will be most trying for him…. That’s probably one of the reasons they are arriving with the ship, in case he needs to pull out of some of the engagements and rest…

QMII will also have her difficulties but at least she’s at her home base

It would be lovely to see both ”Norge” and ”Dannebrog” sail side by side again !

King Harald had a fall before greeting Queen Margrethe, he's fine but nearly gave me a heart attack!

It was stunning to see Norge and Dannebrog side by side at Toldbolden.

Queen Margrethe is wearing the Pearl poire tiara, Queen Sonja is wearing the Emerald tiara and Crown Princess Mary is wearing her Diamond necklace tiara at tonight's banquet at Amalienborg palace.

Seems like Mary is no almost always wearing this diamond tiara. Wish she would change it for her Wedding tiara with pearls sometimes for a bit of Change.

Queen Sonja wears that neon yellow/green gown who hurts my eyes which she first wore in 2017 for their joint 80th birthday celebrations.

The King and the two queens are all sitting down while greeting the guests. The Crown Prince and Princess are standing up beside them.

As he got up King Harald said something in the gist of -"I've thrown myself nose first to the ground before you in admiration" to which Queen Margrethe replied -"Thank you, but don't expect me to reciprocate".

Sweet Harald. I think everyone who watched that tumble had a minor heart attack – myself included – but he took it like a champion. Immediately after getting back up, he told QMII he was "prostrating in admiration" of her – to which QMII replied "so long as you don't expect the same from me. I love them!

Very poignant to see these three together. Easily the most lovable monarchs in the world in my opinion. And Sonja was wearing the jubilee piece that Georg Jensen created for QMII's jubilee was so neat!

Haven't been able to find a video yet but according to Billed Bladet, Frederik opened his speech at Industriens Hus by saying "dear uncle Harald and aunt Sonja".

Cousins banter.

I guess Mary has been wearing the Diamond tiara often so as to not overuse the Ruby Parure, but today would have been the night to wear it, it would have even matched her dress. I agree that she could use her wedding tiara with pearls more often.

Or QMII could actually let Mary borrow a tiara like other Queens do with their DILs as Sylvia and Sonya do. Mary may have to buy another tiara herself again it seems then. I mean it might be another two decades before she can wear any Crown jewels. At least let her borrow one from the royal collection.

I noticed that Queen Margrethe wore the pearl necklace from the Crown Jewels when greeting the guests and the Dinner, but she did not have it on when she arrived.

very interesting they did a white tie banquet although this was announced only an "official visit"!

I was a bit shocked to see CP Frederik having sat down before Queen Sonja sat down while everybody else waited...! It is really beyond me how a future monarch, born into a monarchial system where everything is hospitality, hierarchy and protocol, could behave like that!
The norwegian Queen outranks Frederik on several levels; apart from being one of the principle guests, as the wife of a monarch she is a Majesty. Further more she could be Frederiks mother by age.

I mean, you would not even expect this from any average person, having been raised halway properly! If even these people are not respectful and keep basic standards, who still is these days...?

I´m sure if a commoner marrying into a royal family acting like this, social media would be full of spiteful comments like "oh, no wonder... he doesn´t know how to behave...what a fauxpas...didn´t someone tell him before...wasn´t he prepared before?" etc.
