General News about the Danish Royal Family Part 4: August 2021 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Which Instagram post from July do you suggest have swayed people to rate Mary higher than QMII? With all due respect to the DRF, it's not like they go crazy on their social media during the holidays either.

It was an example. Hence: even a thing like an Instagram post may tip the balance.

Not least because it was five minutes to bedtime and I couldn't remember off hand what happened in July.

-----------

Well if the main focus in July was on QMII as well as Frederik and to some extent Christian, it only makes Mary score even more impressive.
And if it continues you could argue that it's a public indication that M&F not only act like the de facto regent couple, they are the de facto regent couple.

It was announced today that the Honorary Dinner for the Air Force, the Armed Forces and the Danish Emergency Management Agency at Christian VII's Palace, Amalienborg, that should have been hosted by Queen Margrethe and attended by the Crown Prince Couple on March 11, will not take place due to the current situation in the Ukraine.

Furthermore, out of the same reason, the reception of the new Ambassadors on March 9 will take place "without major ceremonial participation from the Royal Life Guards and the Gardehus Regiment's internal commands and without an escort by the Gardehus Regiment's Horse Squadron":

I will place this here for time being at least, because I can't find a general news thread under the QMII section that covers something like this.
https://www.bt.dk/royale/margrethe-paa-flugt-fra-gal-kvinde-nu-fortaeller-livvagt-sandheden

It's another episode by a former PET protection officer.
I wrote about his book in the general thread of M&F.
This time from 1993 involving QMII and a mentally disturbed woman.

It happened in May 1993 when QMII visited a gallery in central Copenhagen. A private visit.
After having escorted QMII into the gallery the PET officer, walked about outside the entrance to the building in which the gallery was located. And he had noticed a woman.
The other PET officer had stayed with QMII.

The behavior of the woman became more and more odd, so the PET officer confronted her. The woman explained that she was checking his movements/going about.
The PET officer ID'ed himself as a policeman and told the woman to stop following him. But the woman didn't believe him and accused the PET officer of speaking Spanish on his radio. As the second officer with QMII didn't know how the woman looked like, he intended to screen the door to the gallery but the woman apparently thought she was going to be arrested and began to run, towards the door to the gallery. (Apparently by accident, the article is poorly written, and it's difficult to follow the event!) There the woman tripped and landed on her belly halfway inside the gallery.

Afterwards the PET officers got a dressing down for not having been alert enough.

I can't remember that episode even though it was well published in the papers at the time.

The Palace has released an announcement about a donation to the Ukraine today, March 12:

The board of the Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik Foundation and the board of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary Foundation have together decided to donate 1,000,000 kroner to the victims of the war in Ukraine.

Under the heading "Together for Ukraine", a large number of Danish relief organizations will gather on Saturday 12 March 2022 for emergency assistance to the victims of the war in Ukraine.

** instagram post **

** kongehuset: Donation til ofre for krigen i Ukraine **

A message of Queen Margrethe is added to the announcement:

"Europe is at war again. I am infinitely sad to witness what is happening in Ukraine now. The development and hope that flourished throughout Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall are now crumbling before our eyes.

Every day we watch footage of the devastation and injustice of war. The unhappy faces of children and women who have to say goodbye to their parents, brothers and husbands who are fighting for Ukraine as soldiers. And also the heroic figures of strong Ukrainian youth who are fighting for freedom - they have the right to it and it is they who are now protecting it with their lives.
For us Danes, this whole situation makes an unforgettable impression. We sympathize with the Ukrainian people and support all those who provide emergency assistance and save lives.
May this senseless war end as soon as possible!

not sure where to post..
the documentary on the Royal House and Greenland will be out June 19
https://digitalt.tv/premierekalender/kongehuset-i-groenland/

"Take Crown Prince Frederik to his beloved Greenland, and experience him like never before: Skiing with blindfolds, free-floating from a helicopter high above Greenland's terrific snowy landscape and in his cordial meeting with Greenlandic orphanage children. Meanwhile, the Queen openly talks about more than 100 years of royal efforts to preserve Greenland as part of the kingdom. The popular royal visits have for generations been an important part of this effort."

Frederik was in Greenland in late March/April I believe taken part and visiting various places and organizations in Greenland.

one was the National Theatre of Greenland

I think this is the best place to post this:
https://www.bt.dk/royale/kongehuset-dropper-ecco-ikke-laengere-kongelig-hofleverandoer

The Danish shoe company Ecco has refused to withdraw from Russia, despite considerable public and political criticism.
Ecco is holder of the coveted "purveyor to the Royal Danish Court" which is a major stamp of approval. It signals that your company has a high level of integrity and has been vetted as being honest and reliable. Ecco has had that stamp of approval since 1991. - For a period at a time, after which it has been renewed.
The court has now informed that the stamp of approval will not be renewed next year.

- Normally that's considered pretty bad!
Ecco is such a large company that they might very likely survive without that stamp, especially abroad, but it's something their suppliers, competitors and people they do business with may notice!
It is in other words and IMO a warning to other Danish businesses: Pull out of Russia or lose the grace of the DRF - and with that also the state.
That may very well mean that Ecco is no longer invited to participate on commercial visit, headed by the DRF and/or the Minister of Commerce.
The Ecco family should not expect to be invited to official events with the DRF anymore.
Any private connections they have with the DRF are also likely to be severed.

And Ecco will have to work extra hard if they ever hope to win back the royal seal of approval.
Once you fall out of grace, it's difficult to return.

Not only that Ecco has been subjected to a semi-sh*tstorm by the public in DK, I think it will now turn into a major public boycott, not only from costumers but also by shops selling Ecco Shoes.

It is certainly rare that the DRF take back a seal of approval, and I'm sure Ecco would have been warned discreetly, but the company chose to ignore the warnings, so...

The words from the court are:
"Based on a combined assessment of ECCO it has been decided that the business from 16. April next year can no longer use the label: Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court."
På baggrund af en samlet vurdering af ECCO er det blevet besluttet, at virksomheden med virkning fra 16. april næste år ikke længere kan benytte prædikatet Kongelig Hofleverandør

Is a direct consequence of my post above.
It is about the transition that is taking place within the DRF and were M&F take over more and more also in regards to how things are done within the DRF. And that fact is becoming more and more official with recent statement being co-signed by both QMII and M&F even though QMII is still formally the Monarch and head of state.

In this clip a journalist from the serious conservative and pro-DRF (but not uncritical) newspaper Berlingske is talking about just that.
I'll translate the subtitles as they appear by sentence.

Q: Is it a good idea that the DRF changes style?
(All the following is said by the journalist.)
(Intro) - The CP-Couple does it in a different way than mother Margrethe would have done it.

- There has come a more openness and more down to earth.
- But it's also on another level where you are more in sync with the times.
- The CP-Couple does it in a different way than mother Margrethe would have done it.
- She has done it in her way, which is a little more aloof/distant.
- Simplified and too simply put, it's a bit like accepting some flowers, give some speeches, say the right things at New Year (the speech) and sit in the box in the Royal Theater.
- A more distant/withdrawn role as a royal.
- Frederik and Mary have chosen to do it in a different way.
- Perhaps also in order to become relevant in the future to a new Denmark and to new groups/segments of the society.
- So it has been decided to use the fact that they are well-known and royals to make an effort to make Denmark a better place to live.
- It's about putting themselves in the lead for different things like women's rights.

- The entire segment is not in the DR1 archive yet, but when it is, you can find it here:

I have finally gotten around to scanning some issues of BB (I don't buy or get it every week now). It's well overdue! My only excuse being that scanning is really tedious.

Anyway, since they cover a very wide ground over a considerable period, I've decided to lump them here.

Thank you for the translation! And I agree with what was said. They cannot do things like they've been done. Being an aloof monarch that just waves and makes safe speeches is NOT going to cut it now...especially when put up against other royal families that now have regent couples in the same age group as Mary and Frederik. Mary and Frederik are more relatable and along with the kids make more of a connection with the demographics that will have to be kept being won over in order for the monarchy to stay relevant. I'll leave my thoughts there and keep the rest to myself until later down the road.

Lovely photos! Seems like the all get along very well! Plus, I am sure they've bonded over the years over their love of all things horses.

In anticipation of the BB coverage in tomorrows issue, here is last weeks issue, covering a wide range of DRF events.

A few trivia:
Img662 is a Q&A about Isabella's necklace featuring a B.
Presumably her nickname Bella.
Other royals have nicknames as well QMII = Daisy. Josephine = Fine. Mary = Maz. Frederik IX = Rico. Queen Alexandrine = Adini. - Caroline-Mathilde = Calma. Frederik VIII = Fredy. Princess Dagmar later Tzarina = Minnie.

During QMII's summer cruise to the town of Skælskør she saw the last sculpture PH made. Img663.

The brooch seen in image 667 is an heirloom from Queen Ingrid, made in silver by A Michelsen.

Img642. At the Flag Day Mary shed a tear when relatives, adults as well as children, went forward to place flowers at the memorial for fallen soldiers.

Img654. Details about Mary outfit can be seen in the caption.

Img659. Details about Mary's outfit and jewellery can be seen in the captions.

I don't know if they had the same nickname, Muhler, but the Alexandrine most commonly known as "Adini" was from Prussia and much younger than the Queen. She also had Down syndrome. Is it possible QA had a different nickname?

:previous: The "Danish" Alexandrine's niece and goddaughter. Perhaps they shared the nickname?

I did a quick Google and several different sources says Queen Alexandrine was known as Adini - so that must have been pretty common knowledge also outside the family.
So as, Archduchess Zelia suggests, they probably shared the same nickname.
- There must have been countless relatives in Queen Alexandrine's extended family, so having two, or more likely more, named Alexandrine and also sharing a similar nickname seems plausible to me.

The DRF has just confirmed that they will not go to Quatar for the soccer championships.
https://www.bt.dk/royale/det-officielle-danmark-bliver-vaek-fra-vm-i-qatar-kongehuset-foelger-trop

We are still having an acting government in DK, and as focus ought to be on forming a new government (the negotiations are still on) DK will not be represented officially by any (acting) minister. (*)
However the DRF is free to go if they want. (The DRF has considerable autonomy in regards to official representation, even though it's always wise to listen to the political will in the government and Parliament.) However the DRF has stated that it will follow the line laid out by the government.

- So that means when a new government is formed and that government decides to represent DK officially in Qatar, then the DRF will go as well.

(*) The government can of course represent DK, even though the minister are only acting. But it's a convenient excuse not to.

So everybody have washed their hands. :D
The government has come up with an excuse not to go and the DRF has also come up with a very convenient excuse not to go either and as such cannot be blamed for anything.
Apart from that I agree wholeheartedly with the decision. DK should not be officially represented in Qatar.
If you are to flaunt basic rights and kill migrant-workers by the hundreds, at least do it discreetly, so everybody can pretend not to see anything.

I notice QMII has a deficit of some 8.000.000 DKK (A little more than one million Euro.) a not insignificant deficit, but according to the report something that was calculated with and covered by savings.
The reason being the costs in connection with the celebrations of QMII's jubilee and added costs in regards to electricity, heating and probably inflation as well.

M&F also have a deficit of around 1.2 million DKK. Their deficit is mainly due to around 800.000 DKK being used on maintenance of buildings. That means their residence at Amalienborg. The rest it seems is also due to the general rising costs.
They have been living there since Christian was a toddler, so no surprise.
Wonder if they have been making a small apartment for Christian?
Say a new fully renovated bathroom can easily run into 200.000 DKK even for mere mortals like me.
And a bathroom is expected to last 15-20 years before it might be a good investment to totally renovate it.
An averaged sized kitchen, like the one we have here at home, also costs in the range of 200.000 DKK - and M&F's private kitchen is probably larger and not lacking equipment.
- So it's no problem for M&F to spend some 800.000, even though they don't pay vat.

Hope they enjoyed the match.

I think the adults may have had some talking to do after the celebration, and there would be no need for the children - and their big ears - to be around.

I suspect Josephine and Athena could occupy themselves admirably. In fact I doubt they would notice it, if Amalienborg burned down around their ears. :D
A little odd though that Henrik isn't there, but perhaps he doesn't care for soccer one bit. There are such people, I've been told. ?

- Or alternatively, J&M have already left for France...

They took the wrong little brother.

Maybe Henrik just does his own thing. I noticed that he was the only boy not wearing a tie on the balcony. If he'd wanted one, I would think someone could have lent him one. :)

Who are the people who were sitting in-between them? That is to say, I wonder why they weren't sitting together.

"Tomorrow Danmarks Nationalbank will issue new 20 kroner coins into circulation. The coin is adorned with a new portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, made by sculptor Eva Hjorth

The coin will not replace the current coin, but will enter circulation together with the current coin. The coins are sent out in line with demand.

The tradition of Danish regents adorning the kingdom's coins goes back more than 1,000 years. Svend Tveskæg (ca. 987-1014) was the first Danish king to have his name and portrait struck on a coin.

Shortly after the change of throne in 1972, the Queen adorned a coin as regent for the first time. At that time, a commemorative coin was issued with a portrait of the Queen on the front and a portrait of Frederik IX on the back."
