Danish Royal Family Pictures, Part 1

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Thanks for your efforts Muhler, I really enjoy seeing these HQ photos.

BTW the photo of king Christian X in 1942 is such a poignant one, even if you don't know the exact context you can see it's a special moment.

You are welcome. :)

Yes, Christian X was a fascinating man.
Army man to the bone, arch-conservative and a bit grumpy. Most of the family were daunted by him, except for the crown princess Ingrid. She could wrap him around her finger.
Not particularly popular, yet he ended up being a living rallying point.

Despite him being so conservative and absolutely loathing politicians, he ended up forming what was close to a friendship with the (most of the time) PM, Thorvald Stauning, who to this day is the very definition of being a Social Democrat. - Since then all Social Democrat politicians have had wet dreams about being compared to Stauning (it was very much Stauning who formed the Danish welfare society) but only one has come close.

As Mary is so often here in DK compared to Queen Ingrid, who in turn was very much considered the very definition of being a queen (consort), I thought it could be fun to show a few pics of the two ladies in similar situation, and to see the similarities and differences in similar shots some 60 years apart.

Queen Ingrid, Frederik IX and a young princess Margrethe in 1952:

Queen Ingrid with princess Anne-Marie in 1951 I believe: http://multimedia.pol.dk/archive/00914/41_914202z.jpg

And Mary with a similar aged Christian: http://ekstrabladet.dk/migration_catalog/NICA/article3683790.ece/IMAGE_ALTERNATES/p900/Kronprinsesse%20Mary%20gravid

And Mary and Frederik posing: http://a.bimg.dk/node-images/370/7/x2048-u/7370324-.jpg

And finally a great pic of Mary I found while looking for the above: http://multimedia.pol.dk/archive/00504/Kronprinsesse_Mary_504193a.jpg

Is there a general interest in these historical photos of the DRF, and the story (as far as I know it) behind them?

It has crossed my mind that Fred chose a wife that was more like his grandmother (Queen Ingrid) than his mother.

I don't know why but it got my attention, in a good way, that Crown Prince/King Frederick would greet Crown Princess/Queen Ingrid with husbandly kisses as opposed the royal double cheek kiss, @0:28 and 2:05 in the videos below.

@0:00-0:15 will be Mary and one of her daughters.
@0:11 Poor Benedikte but :lol:

The historical photos are very interesting, Muhler. Thank you for posting them.

I also think there is a physical resemblance between Queen Ingrid and Mary - the high cheekbones, the striking eyes.

Speaking of resemblances, in the second video, whoever the baby girl is on the King's lap, I can see a similarity to little Athena.

Interesting that you say that! I also thought so many times comparing the 2 ladies! Of course Frederik didn´t chose a wife by purpose, thinking "I only marry a girl looking like my granny", but it´s something unconscious deep down in ones psyche. And Queen Ingrid was a very important, integral part of his life during his childhood and youth (similar to the Prince of Wales and the Queen Mother)

Have the royal family's Christmas cards been published yet?

Kongehuset has made a "Moments from the year 2015" gallery:

There's some lovely one among.

The Crown Prince Family's Christmas/New Years Card is taken in Trend at Christian's 10th birthday. Frederik and Mary has written they wish family and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in Danish, English and French. Frederik and Mary has written all four children's name on the card as well.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik's is taken during their summer cruise in Greenland.

Princess Benedikte has been the creative one behind her and her family's Christmas card.

All 3 Christmas/New Year cards are brought in the new issue of Billed Bladet out today: http://www.billedbladet.dk/sites/bi...lic/media/article/bb53_2015.jpg?itok=fLTxppZ4

:previous: thank you Roskilde

Love the Queen's card, such a lovely look towards her king ;)

And Benedikte ' s too, finally we see Nathalie ' s kids.

And I love Frederik and Mary's card. The children and them have such wonderful smiles.
Love that they take it at Trend. They must really enjoy it there. You can tell they love the outdoors .
Comparing it to the one in Trend from 2013, the kids have grown so much

Has Joachim's and Marie's been published ?

:previous: It wasn't featured in Billed Bladet alongside QMII and Henrik's, Mary and Frederik's and Benedikte and Richard's so I don't think so.

Have anyone noticed this painting of PH by Thomas Kluge before? I haven't.
It was made back in 2004:
https://app.box.com/s/8prjajakz2oahl1038z62c0hvoc8abme

Here is a pic of QMII from 1989. Meeting the entertainment trio Linie Tre behind stage. https://app.box.com/s/n42y9zs24r41ouyltn29y3y9k8rmgk0f
They perform every few years and have been around since forever. A must at every show is a parody of QMII, always performed by Preben Christensen, the man standing to the far right. He is also married to Mary's hairdresser.
One of the jokes by Queen Margrethe aka Preben Christensen came up with during this show, after having requested a pack of cigarettes was that PH was on a diet, "he's now Prince Light".

In fact it was this particular parody he performed, in front of QMII, the real one! "She" entered the stage wearing a crash helmet, because Frederik had given her a ride... A crash-crown... - As always his voice is spot on! The Prince-Light joke is at 2:20.
Lizzie aka QEII get's a mentioning later on. She's the one who has a son who is married to a tractor, Fergie. But Lizzie doesn't use the same blender in the kitchen as QMII, she use a Phillips instead...

Muhler, as a fellow history geek, I personally am always interested in historical photo's. Fascinating to see how Frederik resembles his father in his younger years; the juxtaposition of generations is very informative! Mange tak:flowers:

Next Monday QMII will move her residence to Marselisborg in Aarhus, and that means the DRF have gone on holiday, so not much will happen until M&F go to Gråsten and we hopefully will get some photos. - This time we may hope without Josephine falling from a horse.

Anyway, since Mary is so very often compared to Queen Ingrid I thought it might be fun to post two videos.

The first from 1935, when then crown Prince Frederik brought his bride back from Sweden, aboard the hyper modern Dannebrog.
And the second, some 70 years later, of M&F at Amalienborg.

You can see how much, and how little, has changed.

Let's go back in time and enjoy this well-known clip of a ten year old Princess Margrethe welcoming dad - this time in a longer version and in color: Kong Frederik IX får en varm velkomst af familien | Filmcentralen / streaming af danske kortfilm og dokumentarfilm
Poor Benedikte!

And afternoon tea with the whole family back in 1955. - In the mansion now used by M&F: Til te hos de kongelige | Filmcentralen / streaming af danske kortfilm og dokumentarfilm

Anyway, you can find lots of other clips on this site, which is an archive for film.

Try for example to enter: kongefamilien in the search field.

That clip of a young and excited Margrethe welcoming her father is one of my favorites . What joy

That is so cute of the queen waiting for her father , lovely seeing this film.

It is truly the whole family gathered to welcome King Frederik IX. Among others we see Princess Elisabeth (who´s wearing a "studenterhue", celebrating that she got her "realeksamen") and the princes Ingolf and Knud.

I don´t think the clip is from 1955, but rather no later than 1952. I´m pretty sure that we also see Queen Alexandrine and since she died in 1952. And if we compare the three little princesses then Pss Margrethe is not 15 years old.

My best guess is that the clip is from 1952 :)

It's a scan from a portrait book about PH.

Today is Lucia-Day in DK, with Lucia-processions all over the place.
In fact if you don't look out when turning a street corner, you'll find yourself in the middle of one...

Anyway, the thing about Lucia processions is pretty recent here in DK, it started during the Occupation. Inspired by Sweden where it started in 1928.
That also touched the DRF, and here is a photo of Princesses Margrethe and Benedikte from December 1946: 70 ÅR SIDEN: Små prinsesser til Lucia-fest | BILLED-BLADET
