I think the reason is also that it as a normal workday in Denmark and the Carraige Tour is in the morning when most people are at work.

I have a same question too. Why is the Queen wearing the same dress from yesterday and every year also?
 
Today's Court is the last one and is called the "Grand Court" despite the fact that we always get a lot more pictures to yesterday's "Small Court" where we always get lots of pictures inside too. Today we only get a few pictures of Queen Margrethe in the coach and a few pictures of F&M and the Queen arriving. But the pictures we have got are beautiful. Mary again look beautiful in a recycled New Year's reception gown. I fully understand Mary must wear a cape these days. It's freezing cold in Denmark. Because of the wind it feels like -15 degrees and the wind hurt our faces. F&M and children must freeze their *** off these days after 3-4 weeks in sunny warm Australia :D

This was the last New Year's Court this year. I love following them and to begin the royal year this way. I guess Margrethe, Frederik and Mary tonight will enjoy to give their hands a time off after all those handshakes.

Another member :wave: PM'ed me with some questions about the honor guards and I've decided to answer the questions here:

How do they get picked for this position?
What age can they join the Honor Guards?
Is it a certain amount of time or can it be for lifetime?
Can they transfer to another regiment if they want to?
Do they live in the palace or barracks nearby?
Does the government pay them or the royal family?

The honor guard is simply an attachment of the serving guards battalion of the Royal Lifeguard Regiment.
Or an attachment of the Horse Squadron of Guards Hussars Regiment.

Apart from senior NCOs and officers they are all conscripts. However the conscripts in the Danish military are very close to 100 % volunteers nowadays. Some units like the Royal Lifeguard, the Guards Hussars and the crew aboard Dannebrog are very sought after! And there is usually a waiting list for up to a couple of years to serve in these units.

All Danish males are eligible for conscription from the age of eighteen. In reality only some 5-6.000 are called up each year, so most of a generation don't serve. But practically all are called up for the draft board.
All Danish females have the right to serve as conscripts from the age of eighteen. Because many women have ridden horses when they were girls, and because they are generally lighter and smaller than the guys, the Guards Hussars Horse Squadron is very sought after by them. - However, they still have to go through basic training and additional combat training, because the Guards Hussars is a combat regiment before being allowed to apply for service with the Horse Squadron.
The difference between the men and women is that women can quit at any moment during their service. - Men can't.

Regular professional soldiers usually don't serve in the guards battalion, unless they are senior career NCOs.
But some regulars stay in their parent regiment throughout their careers.

It's not common for conscripts to transfer to another regiment. They may in some cases transfer to another platoon or company, but there have to be really good reasons for it.
Since 100 % of all conscripts in the Royal Lifeguard Regiment are volunteers that's close to unheard.
If someone cannot cope, they simply shipped home. Since the military can pick and choose, there is no need to keep someone around who is unfit for duty.

The conscripts live in barracks during their service. Regulars, NCOs and officers live at home.

The conscripts of the Royal Lifeguard Regiment are stationed at Høvelte Barracks, where they receive their training. Once graduated from here those who are to serve in guards battalion are transferred to Rosenborg Castle in central Copenhagen. Here they also guard the crown Jewels and when it's time for their platoon to stand guard at a royal palace they simply march to Amalienborg or is driven to wherever they are supposed to stand guard.

All expenses regarding the military, whether they are associated with the DRF or not, are covered by the Ministry of Defense.

The sentries perform regular military guard duty, which means they are live rounds and when standing guard the sentry is the highest authority present, expect for his immediate NCO or commanding officer.
If a guard on duty issue an order to a general, the general must obey.

That also applies to civilians, including tourists. ;)

There have been some instances in the past when the sentries have opened fire. Except for during WWII only warning shots though.

The serving guards platoon at Amalienborg is always billeted in basement of the mansion of the monarch. Right now that's the Regent Couple's mansion.
Within at most a couple of days after Frederik has become king, the guards platoon will be billeted in the basement of M&F's mansion.
At the same time the monogram on the sentry boxes will be changed from M2R - Margrethe 2nd Regina to FXR - Frederik tenth Rex.
The epaulets on the shoulders of all soldiers in the Royal Lifeguard Regiment (they are popularly known as rex'es) will also be changed to the new monogram. - They have probably already been made.

Older career soldiers and NCOs are sometimes selected for duty as chauffeurs for the DRF. That's a cozy posting and more or less considered a reward for long and reliable service.
They get a crash course on etiquette and evasive driving and issued a uniform. PH as the social man he very much is, often develop a close relationship with his drivers and bring them with him, rather than leaving them at the car.
I happen to know an NCO whom I served with in the 90's, who until last year was a driver for the DRF.

Pity there is only room for two in the golden coach. - So Mary would have to run behind the coach, and that would look sloppy methinks. :D

Thanks for all the amazing photos and links - it is one of the highlights of the year for me to see the New year Courts.

The photos of the Golden Carriage driving through Copenhagen with snow falling are wonderful.
 
Does the Danish Royal House have more carriages, so that other royals can follow the Queen in the ceremonial procession like in the UK or the Netherlands?

Thank you so much Muhler for answering all my questions. If it was me, I would join one of those regiments and being a woman and loving horses, that is right where I would be. What a wonderful career for any young man or woman to chose. And I so think the uniforms are so cute, I really love Prince Frederik in his uniform this year, Mary's arm candy for sure...:lol:Long may Queen Margrethe rule for many decades to come!:)

Have you noticed something about the Crown Prince Couple in the pictures that you posted? Take a look at the expressions on their faces, they look so alive, relaxed, happy, just brimming with life...........so full of joy and love. Their eyes are bright and faces light up in seeing everyone, darn that vacation was worth it. It rejuvenated them and was well deserved.

And maybe lots of home cooked food in Mary's homeland helped with that healthy glow....whatever it did, nice to see the results.:flowers::)

Billed Bladet this week naturally cover the New Year Courts and due to the Tuesday deadline it's focused on the first New Year Court.

There really isn't much that we don't already know, but here are a few trivai from the article.

Mary's dress was made from silk-velour, which is very expensive, because it's hand-embroidered with pearls, palliates and gem stone. Jesper Høvring is behind the original dress and the remade dress Mary wore at the court.

Our Marie also wore a remade dress, by Rikke Gudnitz made from silk-crepé.

Birgitte Thaulow is the one who made QMII's dress.

Princess Elisabeth wore a dress by Martha Hetting.

At the court for the diplomatic corps, Mary carried a crocodile-clutch from Carlend Cph.

It was the Moroccan ambassador, as the doyen, who gave the speech to the DRF on behalf of the diplomatic corps.
Afterwards QMII gave a speech and thanked for the many well-wishes, including those directed specifically at PH.

Then is was time to personally greet all the ambassadors. QMII, whose back isn't what is used to be sat down.

Usually the ladies are facing the driving direction and the gentlemen seated opposed to them. But sometimes they want to be seated as a couple: husband & wife at one side and husband & wife at other side. When there are only very few carriages available (like in Denmark, I understood) the seating arrangement can not be too strict than in Royal Houses with a fleet of carriages in use, like the UK or the Netherlands.
 
In my personal opinion, Frederick looks so much better with longer hair rather than with his short messy hair. Longer gives him a more mature "finished/polished" look.

Thank you so much for the pictures, I am a huge animal lover and it was nice to see how well taken care of the horses were. As I used to ride when way younger horses are an animal that I have a great fondness for. I would love to be able to see the guards out riding and the carriage out waiting for the queen......and those uniforms, I just love to see men in uniforms that represent their heritage and traditions, so whenever keep those pictures coming. Saved a few for my files, :flowers::)
 
Hi Muhler, I am so pleased we got a photo of Princess Elisabeth at the New Year gala. She looks good for an eighty year old. It wouldn't be the same without her. I wish her a very good 2016 after the upheaval of 2015 - shifting home etc.

I can not understand why Billed Bladet didn't start an English version of their magazine for the Australian market right from the beginning. They would have generated very good sales here. Too late now though. Although if they put out a special issue covering the last ten years it would/should sell well here.

A few things I noticed (should anyone care):
- Marie wearing a big ring on her index finger at the first kur. Is it a new one?
- Mary's new lady-in-waiting Christine is somehow less in the picture than Tanja Doky or Caroline Heering it seems. Maybe she's more a lady of substance than a clothes horse / society person so to speak. I'd love to know more about her. Her dress looks lovely. (BTW what does the word "Skræddermester" mean?)
- Princess Elisabeth looked lovely in that sparkly blue velvet gown!

Well, Billed Bladet launched the site Royalista. Apparently as a kind of trial balloon, because right now it has been taken down for review it seems.
I think it will reemerge at some point as a kind of pay-site, or with adds.

But if enough of you write them, they may consider issuing the yearly reviews in English. Perhaps on a order-basis? The price is very affordable.

The grandest of the New Year courts takes place tonight.

We've previously looked the historical background for these courts, now let's look at the ceremonial that you will see in the clips in only a few hours.

This is one of the few occasions when the Order of the Elephant is worn in a chain draped over the shoulders.
The Royal Lifeguard will turn out in their finest, red gala one.
The Guards Hussars will wear their gala uniform.

Any guests present who are entitled to wear a uniform will wear gala.

The DRF will arrive in reverse order of precedence. If she is up to it, Princess Elisabeth will be the first. But she is frail and may arrive by a side entrance.
As the members of the DRF arrive, those who hold a military rank will formally take over command of the guards detachments present and inspect the honor guard.

That means that Benedikte will not inspect the guard as she does not hold a military rank.

The next to arrive will be Joachim and our Marie. Joachim wearing the gala uniform of a colonel in the army. He will remove his headgear when entering the hall. After greeting a few people just inside the door, he will proceed to the honor guard, where the officer in charge will present a report and formally hand over the command to Joachim, since he is the highest ranking member of the DRF present.
Joachim will inspect the honor guard and formally give the officer in charge the order to "carry on".
Then he will rejoin his wife and they will proceed inside.

The next to arrive will be M&F. Frederik will do the same thing. Probably wearing the gala uniform of a rear admiral.
It would be interesting if Frederik should happen to be indisposed.
Mary is entitled to wear a uniform, since she's lieutenant in the Home Guard. So I guess she would inspect the honor guard as a matter of courtesy, but I believe Joachim would still formally be in command.

The last to arrive will be QMII. As the Commander in Chief, she will also inspect the honor guard and formally be in command.
You will notice that QMII always nods in front of the colour-bearer as a sign of respect.

When the royals arrive you will hear a distinct tune being played. That's the fifers and drummers of the Royal Lifeguard playing the Colour March, which is also a salute.
That tune is also known as: "Her kommer Jens med Fanen" = Here comes Jens(*) with the Colour".
Here is the Colour March. So when you hear that tune tonight, don't look away, because that means a royal is coming.

Later tonight, and we won't see it. QMII will give a speak thanking her government but also the MPs for their work and on this occasion only QMII, now with Mary and Marie, will curtsy to the guests presents as a sign of respect.
I guess Frederik will bow when his time comes.

(*) Jens is the popular name for the Danish army private. Just like Tommy, Ivan, Fritz and so on.
