Danish New Year Courts: 2004, 2006-2021, 2023, 2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I think it's the best way to bring in the new year. You can't beat starting the year off in style, regalia and an elegant dinner with distinguished guest.
I agree with you 100% , I love the way the Danish Royals start the year! now how cold is there now?, because I am suprise Mary with no sleeves!!!!!!!!!!! and not coat, how does she do it? I would be shevering! from the cold!!!!!!!:nonono::whistling:
I love the Queen using her new tiara, very apropiete forthe ocassion:flowers:, Marie looks lovely to the colour of her dress is very nice and of course Mary looks lovely like always , just I was looking for a new dress:sad:
Happy new year to all!:newyear1::newyear:

Always a great way to start off the New Year - with my favourite event.

I think Prince Henrik usually usually wears a uniform, maybe he is having a new one made. The ladies except for Marie have recyclyed even the Prime Minister and all look great.
Nice that see QM wearing the new tiara although not sure if I like it.

Thanks to all that have posted the pics and links.
Happy New Year to all.

I always look forward to the pictures from these Danish New Years events. They're always nice and glittering!

Queen Margrethe looks very regal, as always, although I don't think the tiara looks really well matched with everything else she's wearing. In and of itself it's stunning, though, and I don't remember seeing it before.

Mary looks beautiful and she really pulls off that orange dress. Orange isn't the easiest color to wear, IMO.

It looks like a lot of the invited guests pulled out all the stops as well; it's a very elegant looking group overall. It's nice to see people getting into the spirit of the occasion.

Thank you everyone who posted links to photos. With the time difference it is a lovely way to start the day. I appreciate your efforts.

The royal ladies all look beautiful. The New Year Courts/Levees are a lovely tradition. Marie is gorgeous and I think it is sensible that Mary and Dronning Margrethe reuse such beautiful but obviously expensive gowns.

Could anyone point me in the right direction (most likely not on the forums I am guessing!) to explain the political party set up in DK? I am very interested in how a Prime Minister's party can not really be the party with the power. I saw this on two different Danish drama series I watched and loved but was never fully explained.

Enjoy the rest of the New Years events.

pictures have been posted to the official website.
Den kongelige familie ankommer til nytårskur og -taffel - Kongehuset
some from inside the palace.
on some it shows Joachim, Frederik and the Queen individually inspecting the guards?

That's correct.

QMII, Frederik and Joachim acknowledge the honor and respect shown them by the guard of honor.

Not sure where you can get such comprehensive info in English. Perhaps the English edition of Jyllands Posten?

Anyway, very short and simplified.
There are 179 seats in the Parliament, which means that for a government to have a majority and thus ensuring the policy can be carried through 90 seats are needed.
Before last election two parties, The Social Democrats and the Socialist People's Party, set out to form a left wing government coalition, should they win. They were supported by two more parties, the extreme left wing Enhedslisten (The Unity List) and the centre-right Radikale (The Radicals). These four parties just managed to get more than 90 seats. However The Unity List and the Radicals are predominantly political opposites. So in order to secure the loyalty of the Radicals, they were invited to join the government. But there was a price! The Radicals had a lot of demands - and they got them, practically every single one!
Result: The Radicals are in charge of the current government and the policy is radical, not left wing.
The current government has abandoned all essential promises made before the election and is now carrying out a policy that is de facto more right wing, than the previous right wing government.
As such those who voted for the socialist parties are hopping mad and feel the government has betrayed them. So the government is heading for disaster

I think you can read a little more about how the government was formed in the QMII thread about her political roles.

Something similar was also the case with the last government. It consisted of two right wing parties, Venstre (The Liberals) De Konservative (The Conservatives). Supported by the Danish People's Party, which is usually labelled an extreme right wing party, in reality they are right wing Social Democrats. The PM's were from the largest government party, The Liberals but the de facto deputy PM was undisputedly the leader of Danish People's Party. - They decided how long the government should live and everybody knew that. That balance of power lasted for ten years.

I must say I love this danish tradition!!!! so regal, so fabolous!!! love it !!!!!!!love it!!!!!!
How cold is there tonigh? can't belive the ladies without coat! How Mary does to be there sleevless!

If it is 22K gold it will be that "gold". The higher the karat the more golden it will be.

I cannot help it, this simply has to emphasized.

Observe, admire and enjoy how Joachim, being a true gentleman, as always makes sure that our Marie stays on his right as befits someone as precious as his wife. They are as always the only ones who execute a proper 180 degree turn at the top of the stairs, so that Marie stays on the proper right side of her husband.
That is style! :)

The temperature must have been around 4 degrees C.

Mary looked stunning, though I'd wished for a new gown. Oh well, there are two more days and one can always hope.

Thank you Muhler for that comprehensive explanation. I will read the references you gave. My "other half" who doesn't usually read the forum enjoyed that post!

Yes, welcome LibrarianDaisy!

Mange Tak Muhler, as always, for pointing out this important item of male etiquette to us clueless females! It is so important to know what to expect of our husbands, so that you are quite correct in spotlighting the supermanly qualities of what I will now call 'our Joachim'!:flowers: Elsewhere on this board there is a priceless photograph of la Marie looking up at her very tall (those Lifeguard? caps have a purpose!) husband that echoes your reminder of the superior etiquette of our Joachim:flowers:

:previous: I'm so pleased you appreciate, Gerry :)
In fact I had to remove a little one from the corner of my eye, when reading your post.
Rest assured that I'd be more than delighted to point out the other gentlemanly quailities we can expect...nay, take for granted by Joachim. ;)

Joachim's cap is actually not from the Royal Lifeguard but based on the standard infantry officers (dress and full dress) kepi from mid 1800's.

Now hit me, FasterB et al, I know you want to :p
But you cannot deny these two truths: The sun rise in the east and Joachim is the perfect gentleman.

My pleasure, Lady Rosie.

Just wanted to Thank everyone for all the great links. Today's not been a good day for me and an ongoing medical issue. I've spent the better part of today curled upon bed either sleeping or in pain waiting on pain meds to kick in.

So knowing I had the coverage of the first of New Year's Courts to look at, gave me something to look forward to. Thank you all for the badly needed diversion.

All the Royal Ladies looked stunning today. I'm still not sold on the Greenland tiara, but it is a statement piece.

Thanks again Everyone!!

Hope you will be feeling as new again soon and spend the rest of 2013 in good health. Like you I enjoy the anticipation of seeing the royal courts in the New Year. It is something we wake up to here in Australia and lifts our spirits to see all the glamour and smiling faces. Especially these days when tv news stories are mostly grim. So thank you Denmark for putting on a good show for the rest of us to enjoy.
I don't mind the new tiara I think it will grow on me as I see more of it.

Muhler, Tusind tak for your explanation, it is so interested to know what a gentelman should to do for his wife, even this little things make such a difference! but in this world of communers, it is rear to see a gentelman doing this thing for hiswife!
4 C my goodness how mary does it! I would be so cold!!!!! my god!!! it would be so difficult for me to smile like this! I understand they aecrossing jjust the square only and they come from their home so close but still where is the fur on her shoulder?just amazing from them!

When the temps start to average 0c, 4c isn't that cold for a short period of time. :flowers:

Its not as if Mary had to walk so far from the car to the palace entrance. I am sure she withstood the 4C temps for those few moments without any lasting damage. After living in Denmark for the last 9 years she should be used to winter temps.

I don't know I suppose it depends of each indicidual, I had been working in ice rinks all my life and I garantie you everytime I had to perform with sllevless costumes in the opening number I was always shevering, so cold, I never get use to it1 of course after perfomring 5 minutes program you are warm, but in Mary's case she is not dancing to get warm, I still think too cold for my taste with sleevles dress! I imagine inside the palace is very warm! but what a marvellousway to start the year!!!! and I imagine Isabella looking at her mother looking so beautiful!!!!!!

Does anyone know why Mary stands and watches Frederik walk past the guards and Marie walks just behind Joachim when he inspects? Prince Henrik walks just behind the Queen as well.

In the pics that are posted on the royal website, it shows that Prince Henrik walked to the side as Mary did and not behind the Queen.

I agree, Mary looked stunning last night and the red rubin set suits her so well in her dark hair.

But yes, I would have loved a new dress too, and so on the other hand, I think it's great that she recycles as much as she does. And the same with Queen Margrethe.

Thanks for the link Roskilde, I love the photo of Mary on the stairs she looks beautiful and so regal.

Can you post the picture please because I dont see a picture of Mary walking behind Frederik. The only picture I get from the guard inspection is this where she watches.

Dazzling
Sorry, I must not have been clear in my post, Mary stood to the side as did Prince Henrik. Marie walked behind.
The one of Prince Henrik and the Queen on the royal website shows Prince Henrik walking to take his position on the side to watch. Sorry I don't know how to post the link.

Thanks Roskilde
That is the pic that I was referring to.

Well, if we are to be pedantic, Mary is correct.

The honour guard is to be inspected by the general only, not the general's wife.
You see the same thing when recieving a foreign head of state at the airport.
QMII escorts the head of state to the honour guard, so that he/she can acknowledge the curtesy.
Both PH and the wife/husband of the head of state stay behind.

Mary has indeed previously inspected an honour guard herself, but that was when she was alone and the highest ranking around. (Like the time she named a Navy Home Guard vessel).

The only one who always escorts a royal/commanding officer who is inspecting an honour guard is the adjutant. Last night it was the head of QMII's staff of adjutants, who escorted QMII, Frederik and Joachim.

I agree that she should be wearing more red :whistling: Oh, and perhaps without the ribbons/decorations on the dress that could look like a golden chain from the Elephantorder :whistling:

I will only agree with you that the sun rises in the east :lol::lol:

We are to be pedantic and of course CPss Mary is correct. She knows her place and can walk by herself.
Pss Marie obviously doesn´t know her place and can´t walk anywhere alone, when her husband is in sight :whistling::ROFLMAO::whistling:
