Danish New Year Courts: 2004, 2006-2021, 2023, 2024

Mary wore the same dress in 2008, 2009 and now 2010.

The Queen has worn the same blue dress with fur trim since at least 2004, making this year its fifth appearance in the last six years (2005's reception was cancelled, right?).

I wonder why they choose to wear the same dress each year?

When I first read your post I thought it was wrong, but your right. :ermm:

Perhaps Queen Margarethe considers this dress like an uniform , her decorations are perfect !

I don't think she wore the dress in 2009, as shown by the pictures posted by lumutqueen. She wore the carpet fabric overcoat over her dress, which I absolutely detest.

The Queen just must not be interested in fashion or she wants to show she saves money!

No, I think it is as Maria-Olivia says just above and as I have written in a post further up - these dresses are used as a sort of uniforms. They probably won't be used for other occasions, either. I think that we will see the 3 or 4 New Year's court dresses which Mary has over and over again - just like the Queen's.
I think it makes perfect sense actually.

We have seen one of Mary's dresses elsewhere.

I think she wore it for some form of state event. :)

You may be right, I don't recall that :) Still, I think it is very sensible that neither Margrethe nor Mary has new court dresses too often. Queen Margrethe has a yellow dress very like the blue one which she has also used many times - it had fur linings like the blue. I wouldn't mind if they both settled for this type of dress and used it every year as a kind of uniform.
I'm happy to look out for new dresses for other occasions ;)

I dont remember seeing Mary's dresses except in ocassions like this, I think they are hard to wear, cause they are not per se a gala dress, but yet you can't wear them every day

I have only seen her wear the brown dress underneath the 'carpet/curtain' overcoat on one other occasion, which was for a reception in Greenland. I can't find the pic, but she wore a fancy hair clip with that. And the blue dress underneath the blue overcoat might have been worn in Australia, I am not sure. But, so far as I can remember, I have never seen the overcoats and the dress worn this year for any other occasion besides the New Year's Court.

I think its good that she recycles the dresses for New Year's Court. The dresses/overcoat combo is appropriate for these formal royal courts. This event happens once a year, where she needs a fully covered formal/sober dress. I think its also good from a PR point of view during this time of recession, Danish people will only look at recycling outfits positively. IMO, it would look odd if she were to buy new dresses for every occasion (she wore a new dress recently for the New Year's Banquet) in this time of global recession.

Has Mary worn the gray lace dress without the bolero jacket? I think that would be cute at CPs Vicotria's wedding in June.

It is interesting that Queen Margrethe wears the same ensemble each year at this event, but I think it is simply an example of the ways in which the monarch can show continuity (It does rather remind me of when Queen Elizabeth attends the state opening of parliament here in Britain. On arrival, for years she wore the same long silvery/white coat over her dress until afew years ago when she started wearing a fur trimmed cape - whcih she has worn ever since!) This Danish event is quite a formal and significant one and the outfit does indeed show off the queen's decorations exceedingly well. A gala dress or ball gown (normally worn with a tiara) would not be appropriate for the occassion, and normal day wear would be too informal. Therefore, a formal outfit unlike any other the queen normally wears must have had to be designed especially for this once a year occassion.

Pictures from todays event. Todays New Year reception is the first time for the Crown Prince couple to attened.
The royals arrived by carriage even though it was snowing a bit

So, does Mary wear the same dress as yesterday (like Queen MII usually does)? ;)

Unknown at this point, as the only shot of what may be F&M is a poor-quality distance carriage shot. Although Henrik is wearing a cape ;)

Well well at Henrik in a cape. :)

But they are different dresses..... Am I seeing things....

That quote was placed at the end of the comment because it was in reference to Margrethe's dresses. Not Mary.

Mary has a new dress. :flowers::flowers:

I didnt know this event went on for so many days, thanks for all the photos everyone! Denmark is just like the fairytale kingdoms you read about sometimes.

a video from Jan 5 of the royal entering the room.
Why does P.Henrik stand before Qm in the line? Shouldnt it be QM then P.Henrik?

TV2 video from Jan 6 event
Here is an article with a lovely picture gallery from the carriage ride

I think they (QM & PH) switched places at some point for some reason, because there are pictures of the line going left to right CPM, CPF, PH, QM. Odd, and going against protocol, that PH would go before QM at any point though.
