I also very much enjoyed the video and watched it a couple of time. What surprised me the most was the placing of the roll in the napkin with bare hands, I had always thought that some type of glove when in handling food would of been worn. I do remember seeing the video of a formal dinner table being prepared at Buckingham Palace that the men wore white gloves and measured every piece of dinnerware that was to be placed on the table as to the correct placement. When I go to my local grocery store, Treasure Island here, the staff in the hot food dept when meals are already prepared, they wear white plastic gloves all the time for sanity purposes. Being picky about who handles my food, this roll would not of been consumed by me besides I am gluten free.
Yet if I ever had been fortunate enough to get an invite to such a dinner with QM, that dinner roll would of had a place of honor in my kitchen in a crystal container for all to see and look at....don't touch the Queen's dinner roll...............

Crown Princess Mary looking lovely in a (new?) NY Court dress. I guess she has taken off the cape inside.
ADDED: No, it is (as usual) a recycled gown. She has just removed the silk part, but it is recycled from New Year's Dinner last year and again during the Dutch state visit: http://imbo2.tv2.dk/users/editorial/...74eaebdfa6497e

And Frederik's feathery hat... While checking out royal weddings on Youtube, I came across the video of Margarethe and Henrik's wedding. Her father was wearing an identical hat, which made me wonder if perhaps Frederik's hat originally belonged to his grandfather or is it new? I believe the sabre he uses belonged to Frederik IX.
The table setting video was really interesting - did you notice the elephant pattern on the tablecloths? Cool.

Thank you for the nice pictures, Roskilde. I imagine we'll be seeing more of F & M accompanying the Queen now that Henrik has stepped down.
As for the DM - well, at least they spelled Frederik's name right. About the pendant on Mary's necklace, they said it was a diamond, which I doubt. I'm thinking possibly it's morganite, which has a pink/peach color. In any case, she looks great.

I''m not sure I like the coat worn like this, but overall, I think Crown Princess Mary looks lovely.

Okay, let's talk uniforms for the nerds.
http://imageservice.nordjyske.dk/ima...rop&scale=both
Notice the lackey at the door. The style of uniform down to his shoes is from late 1700's.
He's called a runner, in contrast to those lackeys you seen in dark green uniforms who are called a "jæger" I.e. a hunter.
Now the hunters were a a mix of game wardens and early special forces. Some were recruited among the game wardens of large estates, who occasionally served inside at court, others were picked from the brightest young officers with most initiative. They were destined for a higher career, either within the military or administration. Sometimes they served as clerks at the administration, sometimes as servants and sometimes for clandestine use, i.e intelligence officers.
Common for both these officers and the game wardens was that they in times of war were issued rifles or in the 1600's a very expensive repeating air gun, which were cranked up by a spring and fed by a magazine rather than being reloaded for each shot. Who operated more or less independently.
By the late 1700's most European countries had established specialized jäger-regiments in green uniforms and armed with rifles. So the lackeys wearing green uniforms stems from this period.
The Master of Ceremonies seen in the photo, wear a uniform that is younger. I'll estimate first half of the 1800's. With his marshal's staff as a symbol of his status as a senior court official.
He is not wearing a sabre but a parade rapier.

Here is the honor guard from the Guards Hussars.
The uniforms, except for the kepi (which in French inspired and mid 1800's) is from the Napoleonic period.
Hussars, who were originally Hungarian light cavalry, became immensely fashionable in the second half of the 1700's after their fearsome reputation as irregular cavalry during the Seven Years War and the uniform is directly modeled on Hungarian fashion of the period. I.e. no buttons but instead strings were used to fasten the clothes.
The blue jacket is called a dolman, while the fur-jacket is simply called the fur. The white horsehair adorning the kepi is meant to resemble a mane, not the horse's tail! Not buttheads here please!
In contrast to previous regular cavalry, like dragoons and cuirassiers, the hussars use short boots because as light cavalry they would rarely ride in dense formations with the knees locked behind the knees of those riding beside you. So there was no need for long and very stiff cavalry boots to protect the legs.

Here is the honor guard from the Royal Lifeguard Regiment.
The guards battalion of the Royal Lifeguard have three uniforms:
A blue, which is seen on a day to day basis.
A red which is the gala uniform.
And the gala-A, which is seen here.
- It's actually the same uniform as the red gala, except for the white cord, a lanyard, which you can see connecting the bearskin caps with the uniform-tunic. The lanyard was only worn in battle and it served the purpose of preventing the (expensive!) cap from being lost if it was shot off in battle. The soldiers were forbidden to break formation in order to retrieve their headgear.
As a combat regiment with a history going back more than 350 years the lanyard is worn with pride.
The Royal Lifeguard is however not the oldest regiment in DK, that honor befell to a now amalgamated regiment that was formed almost 400 years ago. Now the honor officially belongs to Jutland Dragoon Regiment, Joachim's regiment. Because amalgamated regiments retain the seniority of the oldest regiment.
The lackey standing at the door in the background, is a rider, seconded from the royal stables as assistant servants.

Dear Muhler,
I think you have explained before but I just check anyway. So the women, including the queen have to take off their gloves to shake hand while the men in uniform, like Frederik don't have to? because the gloves are part of their uniform?
Thanks again.

Mary's outfit is gorgeous, simple and regal. But the cape,I don't know. Something is wrong with. Maybe the material doesn't for with a court gown. She we tried to do like Maxima but failed.

Many and great pictures from today. Queen Margrehte is looking very fresh, me thinks. One of the most 'warm' New Year courts I've seen. I don't know, I just think the pictures are full of warmth and good spirit. Despite it's freezing cold here in Denmark these days... Brrrrr.
Ps. The CP-couple may always beams - but that Christmas month at home with Mary's family in Australia has been good to them (; Mary glows... Fresh summer glow and slightly rounder cheeks and other areas. So relaxed and happy. And the CP-couple barely can keep their eyes/hands from each other... It must have been an unforgettable trip for her and family. (P.s.s That she has gained a few or three kilos in weight the past few years only suits her)

Dear Muhler,
Can you explain to me what this is? The men in the uniforms with their backs showing are wearing blue fabric with a key attached to the fabric, please forgive my ignorance for not explaining it right, this looks confusing to me.
http://sn.dk/modules/xphoto/cache/31...643_2517_2.jpg
Also one of the gentlemen there does not have the shoulder pads with the fringe that the other gentleman has.....?
I must say I am really enjoy this year's court and a Huge Thank You to You everyone for providing all the information on the inner workings and the uniforms.
This is the history of Denmark on display and I just love it, so I hope that the royal family *never* changes their traditions and customs.
Now let me ask you some questions about those young men that are in the different regiments, how are they chosen to be in those regiments, is there a time limit of service or can it be for a lifetime? Do they live in barracks or housing of some sort? What do they do on a daily basis and do they have horses? Who pays for them to be in the Army, I am assuming this is part of the Army, the government or the royal family when they work at these events for the royal family? Is there an age limit to how long they can be in these regiments and can they transfer to a different regiment if they want to?
They all look so proud and serious in the pictures, is this something special for any of them to serve at these events?
Sorry for all the questions, they came to mind when viewing your pictures and reading your comment.........you are brilliant, exceptionable and generous to do this for us. Have you written a book on all the customs and history that you have imparted to us?
Muhler,
Here is another question and I hope it's okay to ask all these questions here:
http://kongehuset.dk/sites/default/f...polfoto2_0.jpg
Now I see these 3 men with the queen, I assume 2 are the Honor Guards for they are dressed the same and the 3rd gentleman, is he also an Honor Guard? He is wearing a different uniform and his has tails while the other don't. He also does not have those shoulder pads and is carrying a stafff, who is he and what does he do?
Thank you....

As for Queen Margrethe she looks very relaxed and less stressed then what I have seen of her lately. I love her gown, and since you mentioned it is cold, those dark heavy stockings must be keeping her warm in that huge tall room for keeping it warm would be a challenge.
Fred and Mary, they are making goofy eyes at each other and I was just waiting to see where his hands would drift tonight and if there was a picture of it.... .he is a very handsome hand and gets more so with age... Mary is one
lucky lady...

I wonder if there are similar pictures of HM Margrethe and her prince making 'goofy eyes' at one another...she is also a lucky lady and must be happy that her prince is now free of duties that made him uncomfortable.

It would be nice to see some pictures of the queen and her prince making goofy eyes at each other, yet in that day and age I think it was more of a strict society then in today's standards. I would guess that royals rarely showed any affection for one another in any form and it was all done behind closed bedroom doors. The cute goofy eyes that F/M make show the public that they have a happy marriage and family even in events like the Royal Courts on New Years. That goes a very long way in gaining public trust and affection.
Unfortunately into day's standards just about anything goes, like today,
Going to the market I told a young man around 20's to please pull up your pants for I do not want to see your bare ass when walking down the street, he shot me a very nasty look and yet pulled those pants up..........next time I'll take a picture and maybe put it on social media for all to see.......
This young crown prince couple are just darling and with their entire family when together, you can see the love and affection they have for each other.
