Good Causes and Kids' Stuff For Belgian Royals

19 SEPTEMBER 2003
Belgium's Princess Astrid is following in the footsteps of the late Princess of Wales by campaigning for the eradication landmines. The 41-year-old took time out during a tour of Cambodia to visit a landmine clearance programme in the heart of the war-ravaged country.

"There's still an enormous amount of work to be done all over the world, but especially in poor countries," said the princess. "It's so important that the donor countries and mine-affected ones all work together."

Earlier in the week she opened an international anti-landmine conference in Thailand. And she also gave the ordnance experts a hand by detonating a recently uncovered anti-tank rocket.

Meanwhile, back home in Belgium, her brother Prince Laurent was taking part in some rather more light-hearted activities. He and his wife Claire Coombs were guests of honour at a children's day in the town of Tervuren, where they wasted no time in joining in the fun.

The couple's day out came just a few weeks after they announced they're expecting their first child. The baby, who will be eleventh in line to the throne, is expected next February.

www.hellomagazine.com - The Belgian royal expressed concern that Asian countries are falling behind the rest of the world in landmine eradication.

Thanks Cathérine Bergeyck for these pictures of the King and Queen. What event are they attending?

They're bringing a visit to Geel, a small community in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. So then they go to the town hall, greet people outside and visit local things (factories, monuments, nursery homes for old people etc. could be anything). Geel is especially known because it has been working with psychiatric patients for over a hundred years, the patients weren't kept in a closed hospital but lived with host families in the town, and were really part of the community...

Posting photos directly on the board uses the bandwidth of the photo agencies. We don't want to do that and make them upset; therefore removing their pictures from public access. If you want to post a picture please use the Attach An Image feature (where you take it from your own hardrive) or just link to the picture.

Thank you!

Queen Paola exudes strength of character as well as good looks. Now if we could just move her past the art museums to something of a little more significance................

I should have caught this earlier but I didn't:

ITTF

"Lausanne, Switzerland, 23 October 2003. Mr. Table Tennis of Belgium, Jean-Michel SAIVE, on Wednesday was honoured by Queen Paula of Belgium because of his 20 years of service with the Belgium National Team.

Jean-Michel played his first match for the national team in 1983 and on Wednesday Queen Paula attended the European League match between Belgium and the Czech Republic, played in Namur.
The Queen watched the match and had a conversation with Jean-Mi. There was arranged a small ceremony and the Queen also brought a royal present.

Unfortunately from a sports point of view the Queen came at a bad time. Jean-Michel SAIVE and his team mates lost 3-0.

Jean-Michel SAIVE lost the opening match 3-2 to Tomas PAVELKA (no. 163 on the World Ranking) and after that Philippe SAIVE and Martin BRATANOV lost as well."

Belgium's King Albert in Bulgaria for New Year
Wed Dec 31, 8:37 AM ET

SOFIA (AFP) - Belgian King Albert II and his wife Queen Paula will see in the New Year in Bulgaria's Borovetz ski resort, in the company of Bulgaria's former king and current prime minister, Simeon Saxe-Coburg.

The prime minister and his wife will host the Belgian royals in a former royal residence in the southwestern mountain resort, officials here said.

Saxe-Coburg, a former monarch of Bulgaria, is a relative of Belgium's King Albert and England's Queen Elizabeth. He returned to his country after the fall of communism, ending 55 years in exile, and won legislative elections there in 2001.

Cant wait to see photos from the event.

From Hello!

The largest ski resort in Bulgaria had some royal visitors over the New Year, as the king and queen of Belgium spent a three-day private visit with Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg.

King Albert II and Queen Paola were guests of the premier – who is the country's former monarch and a relative of the couple – and his wife, Margarita Gomez-Acebo y Cejuela. The foursome spent the special occasion at a former royal residence in the Borovetz ski resort, which is located in the Rila mountains.

While staying at the winter sports hotspot, the royal pair also had time to take in some of the historical landmarks in the region, including the medieval Rila monastery. The monastery, located about 120 kilometres south of Sofia, is also the location where the prime minister's father, the late King Boris III, is buried.

The 10th-century building, which was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862 after being destroyed by fire, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned as a symbol of the 19th-century Bulgarian Renaissance.

Just a reminder to not post images directly to the forum but rather as links. Images, no matter how small, affect our bandwidth and I think we can all agree that we don't want to face another temporary shutdown because of bandwidth issues.

Thank you.
