Crown Princess Mathilde focused on issues related AIDS during her trips to countries on the African continent. Thus, she furthers her agenda attending this colloquium.

He was there once before, when Frank De Winne came back from his previous space trip.

See here for a video clip of the conversation of Prince Philippe and Frank De Winne. (let me know if it dissappears, I will write an angry e-mail to the VRT then :D)
The Prince says in Dutch that he is very happy to see "General De Winne" (that's his rank in the Belgian army, I believe), that the whole of Belgium is with him in thoughts, and that he is very happy for Frank, that he can live his dream.
Frank replies in English, so I do not need to translate that :flowers:

We in Belgium are all very proud of our astronaut, especially because he will be the first non-American and non-Russian to be commander of the ISS (from October onwards).

The first picture looks incredible magnificent. Makes phillipe have a somewhat greater stature.

Thanks for the video!:flowers: The weather was nice. Mr. De Winne was overly excited probably due to adrenalin rush.

Did Princess Mathilde speak at the Alzheimer's event? Is this a cause that she plans to become involved in? I have had a few family members that have suffered with Alzheimer's, and it is an absolutely horrible disease. I would love to see Mathilde working with the groups that help to raise money for research and raise awareness about the disease.

Were Phillipe and Mathilde present at the EU headquarters for a reason? Did either of them speak? I'm just curious. Mathilde looks absolutely beautiful in her dress.

Mathilde looks beautiful in that rich pink! She really is the most polished CP in Europe, IMO.

Beautiful photos, thank you.

Mathilde look very pretty, elegant, radiant and happy. She has looked wonderful at all her events.

Joining sgl, I am curious as to what the purpose of the visit might be.

The agenda on the website of the Belgian Royal Famimy doesn't explain much.

They visited the Berlaymont-building in Brussels, whihc houses the European Comission. They had a private meeting with José Manuel Barroso, then a working lunch, offered to them by the President of the EC, at which were also present Günter Verheugen and Siim Kallas, Vise-Presidents of the EC, and Neelie Kroes and Barones Ashton, members of the EC. (own free translation)

Thanks for the information!:flowers:
There must have been an compelling reason for the visit. I find it odd that the web-site provided a vague explanation though. It is uncharacteristic of the Belgian Royal family.

Don't have to tell me that, I plough through all the extensive explanations every month to compile the calendar... :D

Maybe it has something to do with Belgium taking over the Presidency of the EU in the second half of next year (together with some other countries). Alternatively, it might be something to do with one of the various patronages of the Prince & Princess.
