Just because it happened with Grace's kids doesn't make it right IMO.

If Alexandra is out and about with Caroline who is working, doing a walkabout, attending Monaco day, going to the Red Cross Ball, etc. that is okay.

If the child, because she is a child is ice skating with friends or doing something that has nothing to do with Monaco she should be left alone IMO.

ETA: The line needs to be drawn somewhere. I mean everyone EVERYONE is entitled to some form of privacy. And it doesn't need to be when you are in your house.

I agree with that totally, and I admire Stephanie for trying to keep her kids out of the limelight as mch as she can.

But I think it's far too late to try to legislate against the paparazzi.

However, last week Queen Elizabeth II has been sounding a warning aganst the activities of paparazzi regarding the private activities of the British Royals.

It'll be interesting to see whether anything comes of that.

Yes, it's true. It's kinda scary, to think that you are being watched constantly and that you can't have privacy as everybody has the right to.
That's one of the many reasons I admire Stephanie. She has acomplished to keep her children out of the spotlight.

Princess Alexandra icescating in Monaco, January 17, 2010:
So she did not only enjoy the circus on Sunday but also her
sports :)

Alex competed in the Monaco Figure Skating Championships 2010 on February 27. Competing in category pool 5, she finished with a silver medal. And boy does Caroline look proud! Here are some thumbnails of the event: East News - agencja fotograficzna

Congrats Alex!

she looked so happy...nice pics, thanks for sharing...

Many thanks for the pics of Alexandra!

That little girl will become the star of the Grimaldi clan, I feel....

Wow! that medal means she is really good in figure skating! Caroline looks so proud of her :flowers:

I love seeing Princess Alexandra´s pictures , but I think paparazzis should respect her . She´s just a child!!Being pictured in your daily activities must be a bit stressing , but this is just an opinion....;)

Not that this makes it any better, I certainly agree that the paps are creepers, but the Casiraghis had to deal with this as well and on a much more intrusive level it seemed to me. There are not only pics of Caroline dragging them to school, but also pics of her and little Charlotte praying for Stefano! I was kind of scanning through charlottemariepomeline weblog when I found these and it's like, "C'mon now, you could at least back off this once!" That said, I think as horrible as it is Alex is going to have to deal with this the way her siblings did. And at least---at least it seems most of the time---she doesn't notice them. :ermm:

That's so awesome! Second place in her category! I didn't know Monaco had a figure skating event. I wish we could see her performance. Figure skating rocks. Good for her.

It would have been nice if his father or one of her many siblings were there to support her.

That's great! Princess Alexandra got a silver medal for skating! She must be really good skater! Princess Caroline looks so proud of her!:flowers:

Very true the intrusion into the Casiraghi's lives was obscene. The interest, by contrast, in Alexandra is minimal and has been increased and this has to be said, by Caroline herself bringing Alexandra to public events. Nothing wrong with this of course. Why shouldn't she bring her daughter. But it does contribute to the amount that Alexandra is photographed.

It would have been nice if his father or one of her many siblings were there to support her.

Whatever about her father. I don't think it's at all strange that her siblings weren't there. Her two half brothers never lived in the same country let a lone the same house and the Casiraghi's are grown up and no longer live at home and have their own lives. It's a young kids competition. No reason at all why any of them should be there.

I love figure skating. That's fantastic that she received a prize for it. Who knows, perhaps we'll see her compete in the Olympics much later... just like her Uncle Albert did. ;) :)

You just brought up an interesting question for me, poppy7. So the Hanover brothers stayed with their mom? I always thought they lived with the Casiraghis as they often accompanied them to public and whatnot---the circus and the Grand Prix.

^I believe the Hannover brothers flitted between London and Paris, which was one of the reasons Ernst wanted to buy the Mee-sur-Seine residence with Caroline. This allowed easy visitation with his sons. They went to school in england so mostly lived there, then went to nyu, but often visited their poppy, caroline, et al les Casiraghis. :)

I also think it would have been great if Ernst and/or Alex's many siblings (or just one or two of them) had been at her big event. I think in good time the family will all be on easy terms again. Maybe there are deep wounds that need healing.

^ I agree about Ernst. I am a little peeved that he couldn't be there to support his daughter, but I'm sure she got a big congratulations from her father over the phone, or in person the next time she visits him. And whilst I agree it would have been nice for her brothers and sister to be there, they are all adults now, with their own lives. We can't expect them to be everywhere.
I totally agree with seeing Alex go to Olympics - she's showing a lot of talent for skating and it's about time the Olympics yielded another royal star. It's a long way off yet though. I think she's just incredibly lucky to be as grounded as she is. It can't be easy to raise a girl with privilege and a title and still keep her relatively "normal" child. Caroline and Ernst have done a good job on that front.
And as to the paparazzi, it's a little disconcerting and frankly creepy that they seems to know her whereabouts most of the time. Men hiding away in old second hand cars and under grandstands taking photos (or at least that's what I imagine ) - it just makes my skin crawl a little. How do they know where she is all the time? I don't mean to accuse, but Caroline should be looking to see if someone's tipping them off. That's not just luck, I don't think.
However, returning to our original topic, she certainly looks very happy to have won a silver medal (cup? :ermm:) and so does Caroline! I have to say it again - Congratulations Alex!

Ice Princess

Adorable... she's so lucky, seems to enjoy everything she's doing and do them with ease :flowers: (Imagine if my mother is "Caroline" and watch me compete, I cant help but ... nervouzzzzz...)

just curious, is/was there any royal ever compete in figure skating?

No, you're spot on. It's not just luck. This was the kind of public event most likely open to the media. AP and UPI photographers probably were there. Not just paps.

They spent time with both growing up, but were at school in England.

She is a kid and its a kids event. Why on earth would they be there (her siblings). It would be the type of thing I would go to if I lived in the same city but I certainly wouldn't travel for it. Alexandra's siblings are grown up and have their own lives. It happens.

Alexandra is a kid with a hobby that she is good at. Lets not get a head of ourselves.

As for how they know where she is. How do you think they know? They know where she lives; they know Alexandra's school and Monaco is a small place.

Seriously these pictures of Alexandra are nothing compared to what went on in the 90's with Caroline and her kids.

Yes. A line has to be drawn. There must be boundaries. But here, in this case, it seems to have been an event open to the press, because it was Monaco's annual ice skating competition. And Alexandra is ten, and her sibs who don't even have royal titles were photographed at sports events and going to school at the same age. It may not be ideal or proper but unfortunately, because of the Hanovers' pending divorce, it seems that the press has its eye particularly on Caroline and Alex for the moment. I think there will always be something like this for Alex to deal with but the intensity of this period will likely pass into something more or less tolerable.
The media can't stick too long with one story. They must move the intensity of their focus in order to keep the interest of their readers' short attention spans. :D

And thank you GOD...

That you give us a princess like Princess CAROLINE.
FANTASTICA simplicemente.:flowers:

Glistening Seas

:parrot: Didn't know it was open to the press and that this is the annual event in this category!

:heart1: More than likely Ernest probably didn't show in order to keep Alexandra from being nervous --because kids can sense when their tension between parents which often translates into a distraction for the child.

:rose2:Yes, Ernest & Caroline have done a beautiful job with raising Alexandra and that is to their credit as a individuals & as a couple. :easterbunny:

# 148 - Drawing a line...:

Another factor is the tendency of most "people" magazines and newspapers to give far more coverage to actresses, actors, "celebrities", than to royals.

When I get my BUNTE email newsletter (*please don't laugh*), the front page is always full of starlets, and marriage/divorce news of people I've never heard of.

Judging by the avalanche of celebrity news in my local supermarkets in Scotland, there is barely room left for royals - apart from some specialist royal families mags.

There seems to be a trend (started decades ago by the Scandinavian royals) for these families to show themselves as "normal" and human, rather than lofty or untouchable, and this trend will continue until there is no royal "mystique" or "aura" left.

It'll be a sad day when that happens.

Still, little Alexandra will probably benefit from this in the long run.

That's a good point. Anyway, I didn't notice in any pics that Caroline was taking pics, but I hope she took some pics or had someone take some pics/video (what other purpose for her fancy blackberry?):D of Alex in her performance outfit, because I'm sure Ernst would have appreciated the vicarious experience. Of course he can see the photos in a magazine, but I bet it's not the same as seeing your family's own private pics.

German "aktuelle" has some of the lovely figure skating pics
from last week, the article content isn't worth mentioning ;),
but here are the pics. The biggest one of Alexandra is my
favourite, so great to see her joy!
