Why not? Many non-movie industry people are invited to the Academy Awards. Hope the Princess has a new gown. They may be non-movie industry people themselves, but Albert's late mother was one of the most popular actresses of all time, and an Oscar winner. Heck, they should be there!

Yeah why not?! Prince Frederik von Anhalt (married to Zsa Zsa Gabor) was at the Golden Globes. That's hard to top

In the article, it is said that it is the first time the princely couple will come to the Oscar nights and it is in memory of Princess Grace who won an oscar . This year, Monaco will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Princess Grace

...and don't forget that PA sponsors the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, which is a major media awards show.

Ok, a little bit off-topic but:
So you get invited to the Academy Awards or the Golden Globes?
I find it hard to believe that someone would invite Prince Frederik von Anhalt I thought he bought himself into it

Lol when I was little I used to watch the Oscars and Miss America every year, then stopped when the magic wore off, which was about in my early 20's. :( Except of course I made sure to watch the musical acts I was interested in, which was rare as well.
The only Oscars I regret missing was the one where Titanic won everything in sight (was serving in the Peace Corps at the time). And being a Titanic aficionado I was blue. :(
But this one, ahhhh, wonder what Princess Charlene will wear? And lol have to admit am curious to see whom will be slobbering over the chance to hobnob with their Serene Highnesses.
CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
EDITED TO ADD: has any royal or serene highness ever attended the Oscars before?

I cannot think of one single reason why they should attend the Oscars, unless they are in need of publicity again and cannot make it on their own. Are they part of any production that I don´t know yet? Let´s see, who attends the FILM awards: producers actors, musicians, writers, designers, filmmakers, sound, music, special effects technicians and Their Serene Highneses?? "In the memory of Grace"?? whose been DEAD for 30 years! Just leave her RIP. I wonder if these two are ever going to do some real job!

Gosh, I guess head of state, president of many organizations, active participation in international organizations and sponsor of a media awards don't qualify as jobs. In case you are wondering about PC - being the spouse of someone as active as PA is more than a fulltime job.
...and what non-job do you do?

Oh my god! yes, I guess spending your time choosing clothes, picking up an undeserved award, and vacationing on the Caribean (has she done anything else since her marriage) is exshausting! I´m sure they are going to recover in a ski resort very soon from their very hard lives.

Charlene and Albert will be at the oscars night in memory of Princess Grace who won the oscar some years here. the article of monaco matin said it.
Charlene was very busy last month. 'opening of the christmas market, visit to desmond Tutu and gift to the association (money raised by Charlene for this association, evenings of the benevoles of the monegash associations, fightaids with Stephanie, christmas of the children of the principauty, gifts for the st Devote home, for the nurseries of the red cross, visit of St Charles high school with speech with them, and gala of 'ein herz fur kinder) christman evening with the children of the staff of the palace
To day, there are two articles about the activities of Albert and charlene in Monaco matin(the paper only and not on line, I bought it)
For albert:
He will fly to morrow to encourage the team of the young bobsleighter at Innsbruck at the JOJ. It is his duty to encourage these young people and even it is on sunday
For Charlene; the article said that it was a surprise visit to the young teams of many lands who come to participat to this important race wich will take during 2 days.
She met all the teams ans spoke with the team of italia in italian and she stayed a lot more and spoke with the ream of monaco, Franscisca ,the captain of the team said to the report'they were very happy to speak with her, she said her that she never sailed and asked them what are the manoeuvres and who makes what? She said them, she will go with them one day.

It's quite possible that the attendance at the Oscars will have something to do with Princess Grace's past as
an actress and the Oscar she's won, but I think there is a little misunderstanding concerning the translation
of the French article.
The article does not explicitly say that this was the reason for their attendance. It says
"For Prince Albert II. the evening will also be tinged with a particular emotion. In memory of his mother,
Princess Grace, who won the Oscar on March 30, 1955 for Best Actress for her performance in the film
Country Girl".
No more, no less - so we have to wait and see whether we get more detailed information.

Iceflower, what is said on monaco matin on line is a resume of what is said in the newspapermonaco matin; I read this newspaper every morning. in the newspaper of monaco matin, it is said that the venue of the peincipaly couple to the oscars night is for them a remembering of the oscar that Princess Grace won some years ago. This year, the principality will commemorate the anniversary of the death of the princess Grace.
1982 2012. And the article is more explicite then the article of monaco matin on line.
Yes, it could be an explication but it is not a shame for the couple to come to the oscar night. There is also a french artist Jean Dujardin, that the couple knew very well and who will try to get an oscar.
To day, there is an article of the visit of Princess Charlene to the young people who will do the race of optimist. go on the site and you will see the photo of the princess on the first page but there is no article on monaco matin on line.
There are more news in the newspaper than on Monaco matin on line.

Thanks for sharing additional information from the more detailed paper version, melina premiere!
I was also wondering if Prince Albert had a closer connection with Jean Dujardin - what a pity he's not from Monaco
We'll see what the Oscars will bring..

I LOL at this news..I mean,REALLY?!! a head of state mingling with the stars at the OSCARS ..during Princess Grace's time,it was HW who descended down to Monaco.
Maybe we'll get to see the Ocean Tiara being paraded on the red carpet too, along with a St.Charles sash!I gave up on these two.Wake me up when she bears the future heir of Monaco(that's her main job) and I might be interested again.

I have to agree with burnt. During Rainier and Grace's era Hollywood came to the Rock.
Now Albert and Charlene are going to come and schmooze with with passes these days for show biz "Royalty."
I don't see how this is the way to restore glamour and elegance to the Principality, or get anyone to take Albert seriously.
I hope PA and CW will change their minds about this.
ETA: I have no doubt at all that the Princess will look magnificent, it is what she does best!

Given Monaco's very limited potential for any other source of revenue besides tourism, there is a need to "pimp" out the principality. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace were aware of it, and in their elegant but shrewd way, they capitalized on this strategy knowing too well that the prestige of the Princely Family and the economy of the principality depended on it.
Monaco is a country that requires attention. Attention that would somehow translate to tourism and hopefully investment. There is no land for agriculture, no special goods to export. If it means attending the Oscars, being visible to the media, being photographed with Hollywood stars, then so be it.
As crude as that may sound, Prince Albert and his advisers know that luring that Hollywood glamor back is a very rational way to bring attention and publicity to Monaco. After all, the country has undeniable roots to Hollywood and show business.
It may be "beneath" the Prince and Princess to attend such an event. They are most likely to be far eclipsed by Hollywood's top version of royalty -- Brad Pitt is most likely to be nominated for Best Actor, and nobody else matters to the media in an event graced by Brangelina besides Brad and Angie -- but the Grimaldis main priority and responsibility is the welfare of Monaco. And if it may seem cheap and desperate for some individuals critical of such a move, I believe that this is a very studied and deliberate move for the general welfare of Monaco.
As for Princess Grace and her memory being exploited, I disagree. If anything, Grace Kelly was a formidable Hollywood star, a legend and an icon in an industry which she was a part of for just a few years. And as a princess, she was totally committed to bringing light and attention to her new country. So letting her legend and timeless appeal work in Monaco's favor is appropriate and something she and her husband would have approved of.

I don't understand all the fuss about them being present at Oscar night. It's a big social event, one of the biggest of the year, so maybe they just want to enjoy it, especially when Albert's mother was a part of movie industry and Oscar winner herself. I would attend as well if I could, it must be amazing!:-)
