Queen Máxima attended the presentation of the "Central Child" award of the foundation The Forgotten Child in Goirle today, February 3rd:

The quite elegant dressed lady in the first picture is Mrs Ottoline Antoinette ("Lieke") Gaarlandt - Van Voorst van Beesd, one of Her Majesty's hofdames.

Back in 2001 Queen Beatrix detached this experienced lady into Máxima's service from the very first moment she officially entered the Netherlands Royal House. She learned the young Argentine lady all finesses of royal life and protocol. How time flies...

Máxima surely is/was extremely grateful for her support - especially in those early years..

Today, February 4, Máxima attended the Social Powerhouse symposium "Serious Social Value" in Utrecht:

Bad hair day for Her Majesty?

It is in the framework of the Orange Fund (her wedding present) and it is about "social return" - to give people the chance to be employed, also when they lack qualifications or experience. Typically Orange Fund, so typically pretty informal... with messy hair et al...

The energy Queen Maxima puts into every encounter! :flowers: What a delight. She is unique among royals imo. Though I just was looking at a string of photos of Prince Charles at an event in London and he displayed the same kind of attentiveness in the photos, so it's not unheard of elsewhere. ;) Maxima just pops, though. Love the first photograph with her and the two young teens.

As expected, when she is not acting in her "pet topics" Orange Fund or the UN, then she dresses as a Queen. She looks wonderful.

The Máximakanaal is a deviation from the Zuid-Willemsvaart (South William's Canal, see picture) to lead ships, sometimes loaded with chemicals, petrol, gaz, etc. around the city of 's-Hertogenbosch (means: Bois-le-Duc, the Duke's Forest) instead of sailing through the populated city centre. On this picture you see the Zuid-Willemsvaart entering the city, alongside one of the citadels from the old fortifications. It is clear there is no possibility to widen the canal.

On the picture you see the old Zuid-Willemsvaart from 1826 and the connection to the new Máximakanaal from 2015. Of course, now the dykes with the yellow buldozers are now away, to let the water flood: see picture.

It is a tradition to name waterways and channels after members of the royal family. Her husband already has one, as do queen's Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix, king Willem I, King Willem III, prince Johan-Friso and princess Margriet. There is even a small Queen Amaliakanaal already. For those without their own waterway there are two Oranje channels ;). Other infrastructural projects also often get names of members of the RF, tunnels, bridges, highway junctions and of course polders. Prince Pieter-Christiaan however has the dubious honour to have a ditch named after him.

The queen looks great btw, I wish she would never go outside without a hat.

I like that tradition. It is a visible bond with the royal family.

This is the new Princess Amalia Port in Rotterdam. The Princess Alexia Port and the Princess Ariane Canal are parts of the same enlargement (Rotterdam Mainport extension project Maasvlakte II) which is still under construction.

It is named after her Máxima Channel this morning officially opened by Queen Máxima. The channel is a new waterway nine kilometers east of Den Bosch and runs from the Meuse to the South Willemsvaart in Den Dungen.

:previous: Of topic, but needs to be said. Iceflower posts at very regular times. With the time change, Americans on the east coast/midwest know that when they see fresh, early-in-the-day Iceflower posts, they see fresh event pictures. It's just a lovely way to start the day. Without Iceflower, the Forums would be a lesser place, IMHO.

Thank you for all that you do! :flowers:

Apparently Dchar and his mother made a public declaration on youtube in Februari, asking the queen to attend the performance, which she obviously did.
